[Biocompatibility of implants with and without fluorohydrocarbon glow-discharge polymer coating. 1. Histologic and semiquantitative estimation of subcutaneous reactions in guinea pigs].

The reaction of the subcutaneous tissue in guinea-pigs at implants of titanium, titanium/glow discharge polymer, Gisadent KCM (chromium cobalt molybdenum alloy), and Gisadent/glow discharge polymer was investigated by a semiquantitative method of informing character. The 4 tested materials were well-tolerated at which titanium caused the smallest reaction.

[Biocompatibility of implants with and without fluorohydrocarbon glow-discharge polymer coating. 2. Automated equidensitometric recording of tissue reactions].

A conclusion on the biocompatibility, the solubility, and the chronic toxicity of different implant materials showed the equidensitometric measurement of the capsular thickness in the environs of the implants by means of the electronic image interpretation equipment Densitron. The method, the results, and the advantages of the technique are described.

[Biocompatibility of implants with and without fluorohydrocarbon glow-discharge polymer coating. 3. Mathematical models of the subsiding processes of the tissue reaction].

The subsidence process of the tissue reaction was estimated by the thickness of the fibrous capsule as well as different histologic characteristics in dependence on the period after the implantation of 4 several implant materials. This subsidence process was fitted mathematically by an exponential function respectively a power function by means of the regression analysis. The power function described best the experimentally found curve. The correspondence, on principle, of the subsidence process of the fibrous capsula thickness on the one hand and the 9 histologic characteristics on the other hand could be proved. A standard valuation for subcutaneous tests is demanded which include the designation of the thickness of the fibrous capsula as well as characteristic cell type frequencies as histologic characteristics.

[Localization of colon adenomas in relation to age and sex. A colonoscopy study].

The material consists of 318 colonic adenomas in 162 patients - 78 women and 84 men. Patients with partly colonoscopy, polyposis or additional carcinoma are not involved. Distribution of adenomas is influenced by age, sex, and the number of polyps per patient. With increasing age the number of adenomas increases in the proximal parts of the colon. In contrast the number of polyps decreases in the rectum. This change in distribution is caused by age itself and by a greater number of patients with multiple adenomas, in which the number of polyps in proximal parts of the colon is increased independent of age. Women have significant more frequently solitary polyps than men and the rectum is much less involved. There are two parallels between adenoma-disease and carcinoma-disease of the large intestine: With increasing age the number of colonic carcinomas increases in the proximal parts of the large intestine and the rectum is also less involved in women.

Adenoma

[Patient with stomach polyps--a risk group for colorectal tumors? Haemoccult studies on 106 patients].

106 patients in whom from 1 to 4 years ago a gastric polyp had been removed were examined for occult blood in the feces (haemoccult test). It should be tested whether in carries of gastric polypi increasingly appear colorectal tumors. Altogether 15 patients with colorectal tumours were found among the 106 carriers of gastric polypi. In 11 patients a removal of an adenoma from the colon was performed already before the haemoccult-examination. With the help of the haemoccult-examination 2 carcinomas of the colon and 2 carriers of adenomas were newly recognized as well as 2 recidivations of adenomas. Carriers of gastric polypi should be regarded as risk group for colorectal tumours. The dispensary care must be extended not only to the stomach but also include a careful anamnesis with regard to colorectal tumours and the search for occult blood in the feces.

Colonic Neoplasms

[Endoscopic biopsy study results of stomach stumps following Billroth II resection].

The results of gastroscopico-bioptical examinations of 121 unselected patients on an average 18 years after the Billroth-II-resection on account of peptic ulcers were apart from 6 carcinomas (5%) conspicuously high incidences of polyps (17%), islets of lipids (13.2%) and dysplasias (19%). Manifold biopsies from anastomosis and middle of the stump showed an approximate histomorphological uniformity only in 50--60%, whereby atrophic changes at the anastomosis dominated in 29% of the cases. As in the non-operated stomach, therefore, also in the stump stomach the gastritic degrees of severity are unequally distributed. An atrophic gastritis was present altogether only in 50% of the patients so that postoperatively a regularly accelerated transition to the diffuse atrophy of the mucous membrane is not to be expected. The importance of the chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia as well as of the dysplasias--particularly in the Billroth II stump of the stomach--as a precancerous lesion or condition is discussed in connection with the increased risk of a carcinoma after resection of the stomach. Beginning with the 10th year after the Billroth-II-operation the dispensary care must be enlarged by long-term, continuous gastroscopico-bioptical controls, in which cases the early recognition of precanceroses and carcinomas is in the foreground.

[Pathological anatomy of the extrahepatic bile ducts].

On the basis of literature and own pathologo-anatomic examinations descriptions of cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, cholangitis and carcinoma of the gall-bladder were given, taking into particular consideration problems relevant to practice. As to lithiasis age-specific and epidemiologic data are discussed, a survey of the modern principle of classification of concrements is given and the complications are emphasized. The inflammations of the gall-bladder are treated under the point of views of pathogenesis and newer etiological factors (allergic and virogenic forms). Apart from the structural changes of cholangitis the author enters its importance as way of distribution of the inflammation in direction to liver and Vater's papilla as well as to pancreas. The carcinoma of the gall-bladder is demonstrated under the aspect of frequency and high coincidence with cholelithiasis, in which case is particularly referred to the necessity of differentiated analysis of the findings of calculi. Distribution and metastasation condition the well-known unfavourable prognosis. Furthermore, the increased appearance of colon carcinomas in long-term cholecystectomized patients, which was discussed recently, is entered.

[Atypical antibody against liver cell cytoplasm in virus induced autoimmune hepatitis (author's transl)].

A high titer (1:500) antibody against liver cell cytoplasm was found in one case of atypical viral hepatitis. The central areas of the rat liver lobule react more intensive than the periphery. Inconstantly it was found a reaction also with the parietal cells of the stomach, with the 3rd segment of proximal rat kidney tubules, and with smooth muscle. Possibly, this antibody is a marker of a virus induced autoimmune hepatitis.

[Possible pathogenetic factors of gallstone formation in populations with a high standard of living (author's transl)].

The present work points out the variety of conditions favouring gallstone formation.--Recent research suggests that fibre-depleted, high-fat foods may lead to cholesterol gallstone formation in man. On the other side civilized diets contribute to the carcinogenesis of large bowel.--Experimental observations have indicated that hypovitaminosis C may favour pathogenesis of these diseases in a different way.

Ascorbic Acid Deficiency

[Pathways of intracellular cholesterol metabolism in a model study].

We had concluded from former own investigations that the cells in the arteriosclerotic plaque effect a change of the ester proportion of cholesterol. One of the possible mechanisms ible bond and from double unsaturated (linoleic acid) to higher unsaturated acids. Therefore we investigated by radioactive labelling of the fatty acid moity of cholesterol esters whether such desaturation reactions take place in the model experiment. For this purpose we implanted cholesterol stearate which was 14C-labelled in the proportion of fatty acid subcutaneously into the skin of a rat. We demonstrated radiohistochromatographically that after 7 to 14 days the fraction of the cholesterol esters with 1 double bond was additionally labelled. Other fractions were not labelled. From this results that the proportion of the saturated fatty acid of the cholesterol ester is actually desaturated, in which case the desaturation as we expect only goes to the fraction with one double bond, because the double unsaturated linoleic acid is not synthetized in vivo in the mamal.

The problem of diabetic angiolopathy in sand rats (Psammomys obesus).

No diabetic angiolopathy was found in the retinas, kidneys and skeletal muscles of protodiabetic and overtly diabetic sand rats. The terminal blood vessels were investigated using histological, enzyme histochemical, immunofluorescence microscopic, autoradiographic and electron microscopic methods. There seems to be little or no connection in sand rats between the diabetic metabolism syndrome and the metabolic process leading to angiolopathy.

[Contribution to the frequency and diagnosis of cardiac metastases in autopsy cases (author's transl)].

At the Karl-Marx-University of Leipzig 12033 autopsies of adults (15 years and upwards) were registered during the period 1965 to 1969, 3919 malignant tumours were observed. 224 cases showed metastases in the heart arising especially from bronchiogenic carcinomas, carcinomas of the mamma and melanoblastomas. Cardiac metastases in our cases occurred between the age 26 and 90. The localisation of the metastases is reported distinctly. Further 50 hearts of tumour-autopsies without macroscopic finding were investigated after separating 2 min-slices. The microscopical examination showed metastases is 6 cases.

Dynamic characteristics of heart-rate responses to sine-function work-load patterns in man.

Dynamic characteristics of heart rate in response to sinusoidal variations of work load were analysed in 8 male and 3 female untrained students exercising in a sitting position on a bicycle ergometer. The mean work load was 90 watt in men and 60 watt in women, the amplitudes being 50 and 30 watt respectively. Nine different frequencies were used, the periods varying from 0.5 to 15.0 min. By means of harmonic analysis, the fundamental components in the response of the heart rate have been shown to prevail over the 2nd and 3rd harmonics, indicating a mainly linear behaviour of the control system in the work-load range studied. A comparison of the frequency response of untrained males and females observed in this study and of trained sportsmen, investigated by wigertz (1970), reveals differences between the groups. The individual and ensemble mean frequency responses have been described by several transfer functions, the best fit having been obtained with functions containing two time constants including one with a highly damped oscillating element. The dominating dynamic parameter is a time constant of about 20 to 30 sec. This time constant tends to be shorter and its portion of the frequency response diminishes in order from the untrained females and males to the trained sportsmen. The individual time constant decreases as the PWC170 increases, and is therefore a suitable criterion for estimating the physical performance of individuals under dynamic conditions.
