[Two patients with Hantavirus infection in The Netherlands; substantial increase in incidence in neighbouring countries].

A 12-year-old girl and a 57-year-old woman were admitted with fever, general malaise, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Both patients had acute renal insufficiency based on tubulointerstitial nephritis caused by the genus Hantavirus, which was confirmed by blood tests. Both patients recovered spontaneously. The neighbouring countries of France, Germany and Belgium have recently reported 2- to 7-fold increases in the number of Hantavirus infections. Hantavirus is a zoonotic viral disease that is transmitted by mice and is found in humans worldwide. Infection with Hantavirus is associated with severe renal impairment and thrombocytopenia, which usually resolves spontaneously. Recognition of the clinical signs and targeted serological testing can lead to adequate management of the disease. Diagnosing patients with Hantavirus infections will also help to prevent infections in The Netherlands and track epidemiological changes.

Biomolecule-compatible support structures for biomolecule coupling to physical measuring principle surfaces.

As part of studies on biomolecule-compatible interfacial structures for practice-relevant biosensor and biochip developments, new film-forming aminocelluloses of the 'P-CH2-NH-(X)-NH2' type (P = cellulose) with spacer structures (X = special oligoamine residues) at C6 and solubilising groups (S = tosylate or carbanilate) at C2C3 of the anhydroglucose unit (AGU) were synthesised and their film properties and covalent coupling with enzyme protein examined. Depending on the nature and degree of substitution (DS(S)) of the ester groups (S) at C2C3, the new aminocellulose derivatives are soluble either in DMA and DMSO (with S = carbanilate) or in water (with S = tosylate). The aminocellulose derivatives form transparent films from their solutions. AFM investigations of the film surfaces have either shown very flat (topography <1 nm) films or tubular topographies of nanostructure size, depending on structural and environment-induced factors of influence. Especially in the case of films from water-soluble aminocelluloses with oligoamine residues at C6, inter alia, enzyme-specific pH values and different positive charge distributions can be adjusted by partial protonation of the NH2 end groups. By means of the covalent coupling of the new aminocelluloses with glucose oxidase (GOD) it was shown that the enzyme coupling efficiency can be decisively optimised by the interplay of aminocellulose structure, coupling structure and enzyme protein.

Rapid diagnosis of intestinal Bacteroides species by means of the immunofluorescence.

Rapid methods serving the detection of intestinal Bacteroides species in clinical specimens are of great significance. For this purpose, an identification of the species is possible at present only by means of immunofluorescence (IF). Using preparations of antigens of different intestinal Bacteroides species (B. fragilis, B. thetaiotaomicron, B. uniformis, B. ovatus, and B. distasonis) as well as immune sera prepared against them, the presented results have shown the possibility of specific identification of the species involved by means of direct and indirect IF, respectively. However, it could be demonstrated that the direct IF results in a more brilliant appearance of the bacteria than the indirect procedure. Convincing results could be obtained also in the investigation of clinical specimens by means of the direct IF using a pool of conjugated immunoglobulin fractions (sensitivity 88%, specificity 100%). Therefore, the direct method to detect intestinal Bacteroides species by IF should be preferred.

[Rapid diagnosis of Bacteroides using immunofluorescence].

Intestinal Bacteroides species belong to the most common causative agents of human anaerobic infections. Because their cultural diagnosis is complicated by the presence of a so-called "empty interval of diagnosis" lasting for several days, rapid diagnostic methods are of great significance. Due to the possibility of specific antigen detection the fluorescence antibody technique (FAT) is especially qualified for this purpose. The presented investigations demonstrate that the direct FAT should be preferred to the indirect method in the diagnosis of infections caused by intestinal Bacteroides species.

[Intranasal extradural meningiomas. Case report and review of the literature].

Report on an extradural meningioma of the left nasal cavity and ethmoid sinus with secondary extension into the subfrontal region in an 18-year old male. Review of 37 similar cases reported in literature. These slowly growing non-infiltrating tumours cause nasal obstruction and sinusitis but have no characteristical clinical symptoms. The origins of these tumours are obviously arachnoideal meningocytes which accompany the olfactory filaments through the lamina cribrosa to the extradural site.

[Critical review of the therapy of juvenile laryngeal papillomas].

At present no causal method is known for the treatment of juvenile papillomatosis of the larynx, which is probably caused by a virus. The data of 627 patients compiled between 1944-1982 and published in 32 reports, showed no significant preponderance of any of the three most frequently applied methods of treatment (excision including suction diathermy, destruction via laser beams and ultrasonic application). Our own observations showed that after an average of three operations by means of suction diathermy, a recurrence-free period of more than three years was achieved in 54.4% of the children (n = 16) and in 72.2% of the adults (n = 30). Improvement in the treatment of papillomas is due only to the definite reduction in tracheotomies and in cicatrization of the larynx.

Bursa-independent plasma cells in the Harderian gland of the chicken (Gallus domesticus). Histomorphometrical investigations.

Morphometric investigations of the Harderian gland in normal and bursectomized chickens at the 16th, 30th, and 60th day after hatching, show a significcant suppressive effect of bursectomy on the volume of the plasma cell compartment in this organ. However, the suppression of the plasma cell population in the Harderian gland is not complete. The plasma cells remaining in the Harderian gland after bursectomy are probably components of a bursa-independent B cell population.
