Body temperature set-point and the conscious perception of skin temperature in obese women.

Obese and control women were immersed in a bath of water kept at 37 degrees C. Oral temperature was measured. The subjects left hand was placed outside the bath for the local application of thermal stimuli between 20 degrees and 45 degrees C, subjects reporting the most pleasant temperature. The lower oral temperatures and lower levels of skin temperature rated as pleasant by obese women as compared with women of normal body weight or less suggests that in obesity the set-point of body temperature is lowered.

Wilson's disease presenting in sisters as fulminant hepatitis with hemolytic episodes.

Wilson's disease presenting as fulminant hepatic failure is a rare and poorly recognized disorder. When ophthalmic and neurologic signs are missing and liver biopsy cannot be performed the patients may not be diagnosed and treated specifically. An acute hemolysis only occasionally occurs in Wilson's disease but is considered a distinctive feature in the form of fulminant hepatitis. Two homozygous sisters suffering fatal Wilsonian fulminant hepatitis with hemolytic episodes are presented. Failure or delay in diagnosis seems to be responsible for high mortality in this form of Wilson's disease. Diagnostic value of familial history and laboratory results is discussed.

Adrenergic control of lipolysis and metabolic responses in obesity.

Adrenergic modulation of lipolysis was determined in obese and lean women. Epinephrine was infused alone, or in combination with propranolol, or with phentolamine. In both obese and lean subjects slight alpha- and prevalent beta-adrenergic lipolytic responsiveness was observed. alpha-adrenergic blockade by yohimbine potentiated lipolysis and exercise energy expenditure. Yohimbine application during the slimming treatment increased weight loss without side effects.

Gastric emptying in obesity.

The gastric emptying, expressed as the half-emptying time (T1/2) and mean transit time (MTT90), in 31 obese and 21 control women was studied using a radionuclide technique. No correlation between body weight and body surface area and gastric emptying rates could be found. T1/2 was slightly shorter and MTT90 faster in the obese women than in the controls. There is little chance that a subtle difference in gastric emptying is of any importance in the pathogenesis of obesity.

Circannual rhythm of exercise metabolic rate in humans.

Exercise metabolic rate was established by indirect calorimetry in 18 healthy subjects. Each subject was tested every month for 1 year. Four variables demonstrated a circannual rhythm and its acrophases occurred in the following months: RQ in October; exercise metabolic rate in April; acceleration of heart rate during exercise in February; percentage of body fat in August.

Obesity and pain.

Using an electrical stimulation in 20 obese, 20 normal and 8 lean women, the pain threshold was observed to be higher in the obese than in the normal and lean subjects. The hypothesis is suggested that the diminution of the susceptibility to pain in obese subjects may be induced by the increase in endogenous opiate activity.
