Electrochemical hydrogen storage in Li-doped pentacene.

Porous metal-incorporated nanostructured organic compounds represent an innovative concept in hydrogen storage. This work reports in detail the first practical realization of electrochemical hydrogen storage in such a material, Li-doped pentacene. Although lithium doping is at a very low level the conductivity of pentacene increases considerably after the doping of lithium, which makes ordered layer-stacked Li-doped pentacene very promising as electrode material for electrochemical hydrogen storage. A discharge capacity of ca. 238 mA h g(-1) has been achieved in 6M KOH for the Li-doped pentacene electrode, which is comparable to that obtained from commonly used electrode material, LaNi5 alloy for electrochemical hydrogen storage. Furthermore, a great improvement in the hydrogen storage capacity can be expected from the Li-doped pentacene by simply raising the lithium doping level.

A novel carbon electrode material for highly improved EDLC performance.

Porous materials, developed by grafting functional groups through chemical surface modification with a surfactant, represent an innovative concept in energy storage. This work reports, in detail, the first practical realization of a novel carbon electrode based on grafting of vinyltrimethoxysilane (vtmos) functional group for energy storage in electric double layer capacitor (EDLC). Surface modification with surfactant vtmos enhances the hydrophobisation of activated carbon and the affinity toward propylene carbonate (PC) solvent, which improves the wettability of activated carbon in the electrolyte solution based on PC solvent, resulting in not only a lower resistance to the transport of electrolyte ions within micropores of activated carbon but also more usable surface area for the formation of electric double layer, and accordingly, higher specific capacitance, energy density, and power capability available from the capacitor based on modified carbon. Especially, the effects from surface modification become superior at higher discharge rate, at which much better EDLC performance (i.e., much higher energy density and power capability) has been achieved by the modified carbon, suggesting that the modified carbon is a novel and very promising electrode material of EDLC for large current applications where both high energy density and power capability are required.

Ordered porous carbon with tailored pore size for electrochemical hydrogen storage application.

Ordered porous carbon with tailored pore size represents an innovative concept in electrochemical hydrogen storage. This work deals with physical characteristics and electrochemical hydrogen storage behavior of the ordered porous carbons with well-tailored pore size, synthesized by a replica technique using hexagonal mesoporous silica as templates. By using a mixture of two surfactants (HTAB and C16EO8) at different ratios, it is possible to control the wall thickness of silica and, consequently, the pore diameter of carbons within a narrow range of 2.1-2.8 nm. In addition, highly developed ultramicroporosity (pore size smaller than 0.7 nm), which plays a predominant role in hydrogen storage, can be produced in the ordered porous carbons. A discharge capacity of up to 527 mAh/g (corresponding to 1.95 wt % hydrogen storage) has been achieved in 6 M KOH for the ordered porous carbon. Furthermore, the ordered porous carbons also possess excellent capacity retainability after charge-discharge cycles and rate capability.
