Asymmetrical nonscalp aplasia cutis congenita: a case report.

Aplasia cutis congenita or congenital absence of the skin is a rare and serious congenital disease; its etiopathogenesis remains unclear. In this condition, localized or widespread areas of skin are absent at birth. A newborn suffering from an unusual aplasia cutis congenita located asymmetrically on the nonscalp, without blistering, was presented. This patient was completely healed with conservative treatment.

Effects of abdominoplasty on respiratory functions: a prospective study.

The short-term and the long-term effects of abdominoplasty on the respiratory function of healthy adults are not known because of a lack of studies on this subject. Theoretically one might suggest that abdominoplasty can cause respiratory decompensation resulting from musculofascial plication, which reduces the respiratory reserve by decreasing intra-abdominal volume and diaphragmatic excursion. This prospective study was performed to evaluate the short-term effects of abdominoplasty on the pulmonary function of 14 consecutive otherwise healthy subjects. Calculation of the body mass index, measurement of the waist circumference, and the distance from xiphoid to umbilicus, and spirometry were performed for each subject preoperatively, and they were repeated at 10 and 30 days after the operation. The mean values of body mass index (p < 0.001), waist circumference (p < 0.05), and the distance from xiphoid to umbilicus (p < 0.001) were all decreased significantly by postoperative day 10. Comparison of the spirometric measurements showed a significant improvement in the mean forced vital capacity (p < 0.01) on day 30 postoperatively, whereas the mean forced expiratory volume in first second did not change throughout the study period. The authors conclude that abdominoplasty could improve pulmonary function in healthy subjects by increasing the forced vital capacity.

Effects of hyaluronic acid on postoperative adhesion of tendo calcaneus surgery: an experimental study in rats.

Adhesions are a significant problem after tendon surgery. The effects of hyaluronic acid on adhesion formation of the tendo calcaneus were investigated in this study. Twenty Wistar rats were utilized. Both tendo calcanei were incised transversely, and then repaired. Hyaluronic acid (0.2 cc) was injected into peritendinous tissue on the right side, while the same amount of normal saline was injected to the left side as a control. The animals were sacrificed 40days after the experiment. Both the right and left tendon adhesions were evaluated both macroscopically and microscopically for the presence of adhesions (grading scale 0-4). Throughout the experimental period, there was no difference in range of motion of the ankle between the two groups. Macroscopically, there were fewer adhesions in the experimental group (mean 0.6 +/- 0.8) compared to the controls (mean 1.1 +/- 0.2). This difference was not statistically significant (p = .096). Histopathologically, these parameters were similar in both the experimental (mean 1.15 +/- 0.98) and the control groups (mean 1.9 +/- 1.25). This difference was significant (p = .043). Hyaluronic acid may be effective for prevention of adhesions in the tendo calcaneus though this effect could not be demonstrated experimentally.

Extensive skin calcifications in an infant with chronic renal failure: metastatic calcinosis cutis.

Calcinosis cutis, one of the rare manifestations of systemic calcinosis, is characterized by the deposition of calcium and phosphate salts in the skin. Metastatic calcinosis, usually a late complication of chronic renal failure, arises from increased calcium or phosphate levels in the serum or both. Both sexes and all ages may be affected; however, cutaneous involvement is uncommon, particularly in children. We present the youngest patient, to our knowledge, with end-stage renal disease and cutaneous metastatic calcification resulting from secondary hyperparathyroidism. A 2-month-old infant presented to the pediatric service with anuria and uremia. A renal biopsy specimen showed chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis. Indurated, firm, tender reddish papules were localized to both lower limbs, and extensive irregular nodules and plaques with ulceration and white stony contents were localized to the right upper limb. Topical antibiotic ointment was applied to the skin lesions to prevent secondary infection. However, acute peritonitis developed during peritoneal dialysis, and death occurred as a result of sepsis.
