Unusual transformation of the diarylmethanol derivative into an unknown 1,2,3,6,7,10-hexahydroxylated anthracene system.

10-Benzyloxy-1,2,3-trimethoxy-6,7-(methylene-1,3-dioxy)anthracene as a potential material for molecular electronics was synthesized from the O-benzyl-protected diarylmethanol derivative containing the 1,3-dioxyethylene acetal function via a one-pot procedure under acidic conditions (1 N HCl, methanol, 60 h) in 60% yield. The replacement of methanol for benzene resulted in hydrolysis of the acetal function in 96% yield.

Naphthalene-1,3-diol.

The molecules of the title compound, C10H8O2, are linked by two O-H...O hydrogen bonds, which form infinite chains with a graph-set descriptor of C6. These chains are linked into puckered (100) sheets of R4(4)(8) and R4(4)(24) rings. Adjacent sheets are connected by weak C-H...pi and pi-pi interactions into a continuous three-dimensional network.

2,4'-isopropylidenediphenol.

Molecules of the title compound [systematic name: 2,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)diphenol], C15H16O2, are linked through intermolecular O-H...O hydrogen bonds into infinite zigzag chains. The molecular structure is compared with that of the related compound 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol.
