Generation and detection of acoustic solitons in crystalline slabs by laser ultrasonics.

Acoustic solitons have been recently observed in different systems (Si, Sapphire, MgO, alpha-quartz). Such acoustic waves could lead to sub-picosecond acoustic pulses. In this paper, we report on the formation of acoustic solitons in a GaAs crystalline slab. A short picosecond acoustic pulse is generated by absorption of a femtosecond laser pulse in an aluminum thin film deposited on one side of the slab. This strain pulse travels through the sample up to the opposite side where it is detected by a time delayed laser pulse reflected by an aluminum transducer. We use interferometric detection to measure independently the real and imaginary parts of the relative change in optical reflectivity induced by the acoustic pulse. We find that, at low temperature and with a laser pump pulse energy of 10 nJ, an acoustic soliton clearly separates from the acoustic pulse in GaAs slab. The soliton shape is compared with numerical simulations for different excitation conditions. From the very unique properties of solitons, we infer a soliton pulse duration of about 2.3 ps which corresponds to a spatial extent of only 12 nm.

Instantaneous velocity profiles during granular avalanches.

We perform experimental measurements of the instantaneous velocity profile of the flowing layer during granular avalanches. In the pile depth, the velocity profile follows a pure exponential decrease in contrast with steady flows that are known to exhibit a well developed upper linear part. The velocity profile in the pile width is a plug flow with two exponential boundary layers at the walls. Even though no steady state is observed during the avalanche, these velocity profiles are self-similar and build up almost instantaneously, with time independent characteristic lengths.

Interferometric detection in picosecond ultrasonics for nondestructive testing of submicrometric opaque multilayered samples: TiN/AlCu/TiN/Ti/Si.

An experimental investigation of nanometric thin films by a picosecond ultrasonic technique is presented. A photoelastic model is used with an interferometric device, combined with ultrafast optical pump and probe setup, to measure the thicknesses of submicrometric layers made of TiN, Ti, and AlCu deposited on silicon (Si) wafers. The results are in good agreement with ellipsometry measurements showing that the picosecond ultrasonic technique can give accurate results even when the reflectance signal is very low. Additional important results are first, that the adhesion of the TiN surface film is probed by processing both the frequency and the damping of the oscillation of a resonance acoustic mode; and second, the presence of a thin buried TiN layer under an opaque AlCu film is highlighted by the interferometric setup.

Granular avalanches in fluids.

Three regimes of granular avalanches in fluids are put in light depending on the Stokes number St which prescribes the relative importance of grain inertia and fluid viscous effects and on the grain/fluid density ratio r. In gas (r>>1 and St>1, e.g., the dry case), the amplitude and time duration of avalanches do not depend on any fluid effect. In liquids (r approximately 1), for decreasing St, the amplitude decreases and the time duration increases, exploring an inertial regime and a viscous regime. These three regimes are described by the analysis of the elementary motion of one grain.
