Global bifurcation investigation of an optimal velocity traffic model with driver reaction time.

We investigate an optimal velocity model which includes the reflex time of drivers. After an analytical study of the stability and local bifurcations of the steady-state solution, we apply numerical continuation techniques to investigate the global behavior of the system. Specifically, we find branches of oscillating solutions connecting Hopf bifurcation points, which may be super- or subcritical, depending on parameters. This analysis reveals several regions of multistability.

External cavity modes of semiconductor lasers with phase-conjugate feedback.

External cavity modes (ECMs) of a semiconductor laser with phase-conjugate feedback are defined as time-periodic pulsating intensity solutions exhibiting a frequency close to an integer multiple of the external cavity frequency. As the feedback rate progressively increases from zero, they sequentially appear as stable attractors in the bifurcation diagram. We construct a simple analytical approximation of these pulsating intensity solutions and determine their frequencies. We show that branches of ECMs are isolated. Finally, the validity of our approximation is tested by comparing numerical bifurcation diagrams obtained by simulation and continuation techniques with our analytical results.

Entropy and bifurcations in a chaotic laser.

We compute bounds on the topological entropy associated with a chaotic attractor of a semiconductor laser with optical injection. We consider the Poincaré return map to a fixed plane, and are able to compute the stable and unstable manifolds of periodic points globally, even though it is impossible to find a plane on which the Poincaré map is globally smoothly defined. In this way, we obtain the information that forms the input of the entropy calculations, and characterize the boundary crisis in which the chaotic attractor is destroyed. This boundary crisis involves a periodic point with negative eigenvalues, and the entropy associated with the chaotic attractor persists in a chaotic saddle after the bifurcation.

Global bifurcations and bistability at the locking boundaries of a semiconductor laser with phase-conjugate feedback.

We investigate dynamics and bifurcations of a single-mode semiconductor laser subject to phase-conjugate feedback near the locking region. The system is described by rate equations which are a three-dimensional system with a delay. With tools that go much beyond mere simulation, we find and follow steady states regardless of their stability and compute unstable manifolds of saddle points. Furthermore, we identify heteroclinic bifurcations, which turn out to be responsible for bistability and excitability at the locking boundaries.

Global quantitative predictions of complex laser dynamics.

We demonstrate unprecedented agreement between a theoretical two-dimensional bifurcation diagram and the corresponding experimental stability map of an optically injected semiconductor laser over a large range of relevant injection parameter values. The bifurcation diagram encompasses both local and global bifurcations mapping out regions of regular, chaotic, and multistable behavior in considerable detail. This demonstrates the power of dynamical systems modeling for the quantitative prediction of nonlinear dynamics and chaos of semiconductor lasers.

Multipulse excitability in a semiconductor laser with optical injection.

An optically injected semiconductor laser can produce excitable multipulses. Homoclinic bifurcation curves confine experimentally accessible regions in parameter space where the laser emits a certain number of pulses after being triggered from its steady state by a single perturbation. This phenomenon is organized by a generic codimension-two homoclinic bifurcation and should also be observable in other systems.

Two-dimensional global manifolds of vector fields.

We describe an efficient algorithm for computing two-dimensional stable and unstable manifolds of three-dimensional vector fields. Larger and larger pieces of a manifold are grown until a sufficiently long piece is obtained. This allows one to study manifolds geometrically and obtain important features of dynamical behavior. For illustration, we compute the stable manifold of the origin spiralling into the Lorenz attractor, and an unstable manifold in zeta(3)-model converging to an attracting limit cycle.
