Proposed experiments to probe the non-Abelian nu = 5/2 quantum hall state.

We propose several experiments to test the non-Abelian nature of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall state at nu = 5/2. In a simplified version of the experiment suggested by [S. Das Sarma, M. Freedman, and C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 166802 (2005).], interference is turned on and off when the number of localized quasiparticles between the interfering paths varies between even and odd. We find analogous effects in the thermodynamic properties of closed systems.

Theory of spin hall conductivity in n-doped GaAs.

We develop a theory of extrinsic spin currents in semiconductors, resulting from spin-orbit coupling at charged scatterers, which leads to skew-scattering and side-jump contributions to the spin-Hall conductivity. Applying the theory to bulk n-GaAs, without any free parameters, we find spin currents that are in reasonable agreement with experiments by Kato et al. [Science 306, 1910 (2004)].

Steady states of a microwave-irradiated quantum-Hall gas.

We consider effects of a long-wavelength disorder potential on the zero conductance state (ZCS) of the microwave-irradiated 2D electron gas. Assuming a uniform Hall conductivity, we construct a Lyapunov functional and derive stability conditions on the domain structure of the photogenerated fields. We solve the resulting equations for a general one-dimensional and certain two-dimensional disorder potentials, and find nonzero conductances, photovoltages, and circulating dissipative currents. In contrast, weak white-noise disorder does not destroy the ZCS, but induces mesoscopic current fluctuations.

Dynamic ferromagnetic proximity effect in photoexcited semiconductors.

The spin dynamics of photoexcited carriers in semiconductors in contact with a ferromagnet is treated theoretically and compared with time-dependent Faraday rotation experiments. The long-time response of the system is found to be governed by the first tens of picoseconds in which the excited plasma interacts strongly with the intrinsic interface between the semiconductor and the ferromagnet in spite of the existence of a Schottky barrier in equilibrium.

Finite-size effects in tunneling between parallel quantum wires.

We present theoretical calculations and experimental measurements which reveal finite-size effects in the tunneling between two parallel quantum wires, fabricated at the cleaved edge of a GaAs/AlGaAs bilayer heterostructure. Observed oscillations in the differential conductance, as a function of bias voltage and applied magnetic field, provide direct information on the shape of the confining potential. Superimposed modulations indicate the existence of two distinct excitation velocities, as expected from spin-charge separation.

Nonuniversal behavior of scattering between fractional quantum Hall edges.

In a fractional quantum Hall system with a narrow constriction, tunneling of quasiparticles between states at different edges can lead to resistance and to shot noise. The ratio of the shot noise to the backscattered current, in the weak scattering regime, measures the fractional charge of the quasiparticle, which has been confirmed in several experiments. However, the predicted nonlinearity of the resistance was apparently not observed in some of these cases. As a possible explanation, we consider a model where coupling between the current carrying edge mode and additional phononlike edge modes can lead to nonuniversal exponents in the current-voltage characteristic.
