We study the adiabatic limit and the semiclassical limit with a second-quantized two-mode model of a many-boson interacting system. When its mean-field interaction is small, these two limits are commutable. However, when the interaction is strong and over a critical value, the two limits become incommutable. This change of commutability is associated with a topological change in the structure of the energy bands. These results reveal that nonlinear mean-field theories, such as Gross-Pitaevskii equations for Bose-Einstein condensates, can be invalid in the adiabatic limit.
A series of nanosized cavity-containing bipyrazolate-bridged metallomacrocycles with dimetal centers, namely, {[(bpy)M]8L4}(NO3)8 [L=3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolyl, Pd, Pt; 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene), Pd; and 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbiphenyl, Pd], {[(phen)M]8L4}(NO3)8 [L=3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolyl, Pd, Pt; 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, Pd; and 1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbiphenyl, Pd], {[(bpy)Pd]6L3}(NO3)6 [L=1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], {[(phen)Pd]6L3}(NO3)6 [L=1,4-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], {[(bpy)Pd]4L2}(NO3)4 [L=1,3-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, and 1,2-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,], and {[(phen)Pd]4L2}(NO3)4 [L=1,3-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene, and 1,2-bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene,] (where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine and phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized through a directed self-assembly approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1H-bipyrazolyl ligands in aqueous solution. These complexes, with weak Pd(II)...Pd(II) or Pt(II)...Pt(II) interactions, have been characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR, cold-spray ionization or electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy. Complexes and have also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.
The concept of a geometric phase (Berry's phase) is generalized to the case of noneigenstates, which is applicable to both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. This is particularly important to nonlinear quantum systems, where, due to the lack of the superposition principle, the adiabatic evolution of a general state cannot be described in terms of eigenstates. For linear quantum systems, our new geometric phase reduces to a statistical average of Berry's phases. Our results are demonstrated with a nonlinear two-level model.
Compounds [RuII(bipy)(terpy)L](PF6)2 with bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, terpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, L = H2O, imidazole (imi), 4-methylimidazole, 2-methylimidazole, benzimidazole, 4,5-diphenylimidazole, indazole, pyrazole, 3-methylpyrazole have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, ESI-MS and UV/Vis (in CH3CN and H2O). For L = H2O, imidazole, 4,5-diphenylimidazole and indazole the X-ray structures of the complexes have been determined with the crystal packing featuring only few intermolecular C-H...pi or pi-pi interactions due to the separating action of the PF6-anions. Complexes with L = imidazole and 4-methylimidazole exhibit a fluorescence emission with a maximum at 662 and 667 nm, respectively (lambdaexc= 475 nm, solvent CH3CN or H2O). The substitution of the aqua ligand in [Ru(bipy)(terpy)(H2O)]2+ in aqueous solution by imidazole to give [Ru(bipy)(terpy)(imi)]2+ is fastest at a pH of 8.5 (as followed by the increase in emission intensity). Coupling of the [Ru(bipy)(terpy)]2+ fragment to cytochrome c(Yeast iso-1) starting from the Ru-aqua complex was successful at 35 degrees C and pH 7.0 after 5 d under argon in the dark. The [Ru(bipy)(terpy)(cyt c)]-product was characterized by UV/Vis, emission and mass spectrometry. The location where the [Ru(bipy)(terpy)] complex was coupled to the protein was identified as His44 (corresponding to His39 in other numbering schemes) using digestion of the Ru-coupled protein by trypsin and analysis of the tryptic peptides by HPLC-high resolution MS.
We propose a systematic procedure to directly extract the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurement. The procedure is successfully applied to the Be(10(-)10) surface, providing new insights into electron-phonon coupling at this surface. The method is shown to be robust against imperfections in experimental data and suitable for wider applications.
We propose that the indirect adatom-adatom interaction mediated by the conduction electrons of a metallic surface is responsible for the sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]<==>3x3 structural phase transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111). When the indirect interaction overwhelms the local stress field imposed by the substrate registry, the system suffers a phonon instability, resulting in a structural phase transition in the adlayer. Our theory is capable of explaining all the salient features of the sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]<==>3x3 transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111), and is in principle applicable to a wide class of systems whose surfaces are metallic before the transition.
We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of "Schrödinger cat" states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.
We investigate adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates but also characterizes the motion of noneigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions and are conserved in the adiabatic evolution of noneigenstates.
Three 5,5'-substituted 2,2'-bipyridyl ligands around a metal atom form two clefts which can encapsulate sulfate, perchlorate, or nitrate anions.
The dimeric W(V) complex [Et(4)N](4)[syn-(O=W(NCS)(3))(2)(mu-S)(2)], 1, prepared from [Et(4)N](2)[WS(4)], SCN(-), and Cd(2+), shows interesting reactivity patterns in that the thiocyanate trans to the oxo group can in part be replaced, initiated by Mn(2+), by dimethylformamide (DMF) to form [Et(4)N](2.5)[(O=W(NCS)(2.25)(DMF)(1.25))(2)(mu-S)(2)], 2. With Ag(+), 1 undergoes partial replacement of SCN(-) by DMF and coordinates to the silver ions to generate ([Et(4)N](2.5)[(W(2)O(2)(NCS)(2)(mu-S)(2))(mu-NCS)(2)(DMF)(Ag(0.5)(SCN))])(n), 3. Compound 3 constitutes a polymeric double-stranded chain, with normal bonding interactions [via W-(mu-NCS)-Ag] between the two strands, and moderate intrastrand [W-(mu-NCS).Ag] bonding. The crystal and molecular structures of the three compounds are described.
The self-assembly of iron dots on the insulating surface of NaCl(001) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Under proper growth conditions, nanometer-scale magnetic iron dots with remarkably narrow size distributions can be achieved in the absence of a wetting layer. Furthermore, both the vertical and lateral sizes of the dots can be tuned with the iron dosage without introducing apparent size broadening, even though the clustering is clearly in the strong coarsening regime. These observations are interpreted using a phenomenological mean-field theory, in which a coverage-dependent optimal dot size is selected by strain-mediated dot-dot interactions.

We propose a quantum tweezer for extracting a desired number of neutral atoms from a reservoir. A trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is used as the reservoir, taking advantage of its coherent nature, which can guarantee a constant outcome. The tweezer is an attractive quantum dot, which may be generated by red-detuned laser light. By moving at certain speeds, the dot can extract a desired number of atoms from the condensate through Landau-Zener tunneling. The feasibility of our quantum tweezer is demonstrated through realistic and extensive model calculations.
We study the quantum chaos of a ripple billiard that has sinusoidal walls. We show that this type of ripple billiard has a Hamiltonian matrix that can be found exactly in terms of elementary functions. This feature greatly improves computation efficiency; a complete set of eigenstates from the ground state up to the 10,000th level can be calculated simultaneously. Nearest neighbor spacing of energy levels of a chaotic ripple billiard shows a Brody distribution (with a confidence level of 99% by chi(2) test) instead of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble prediction. For high energy levels we observe scars and interesting patterns that have no resemblance to classical periodic orbits. Momentum localization of scarred eigenstates is also observed. We compare the scar associated localization with quantum dynamical Anderson localization by drawing the wave function distribution on basis state coefficients.
The generation of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with phase imprinting is studied by mapping it into the classic problem of a damped driven pendulum. We provide a simple but powerful scheme, designing the phase imprint for various desired outcomes of soliton generation. For a given phase step, we derive a formula for the number of dark solitons traveling in each direction, and examine the physics behind the generation of counterpropagating dark solitons.
