VMD: a community annotation database for oomycetes and microbial genomes.

The VBI Microbial Database (VMD) is a database system designed to host a range of microbial genome sequences. At present, the database contains genome sequence and annotation data of two plant pathogens Phytophthora sojae and Phytophthora ramorum. With the completion of the draft genome sequences of these pathogens in collaboration with the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI), we have created this resource to make the sequences publicly available. The genome sequences (95 MB for P.sojae and 65 MB for P.ramorum) were annotated with approximately 19,000 and approximately 16,000 gene models, respectively. We used two different statistical methods to validate these gene models, Fickett's and a log-likelihood method. Functional annotation of the gene models is based on results from BlastX and InterProScan screens. From the InterProScan results, we could assign putative functions to 17,694 genes in P.sojae and 14,700 genes in P.ramorum. We created an easy-to-use genome browser to view the genome sequence data, which opens to detailed annotation pages for each gene model. A community annotation interface is available for registered community members to add or edit annotations. There are approximately 1600 gene models for P.sojae and approximately 700 models for P.ramorum that have already been manually curated. A toolkit is provided as an additional resource for users to perform a variety of sequence analysis jobs. The database is publicly available at http://phytophthora.vbi.vt.edu/.

[A preliminary study of nasoalveolar molding for infants born with cleft lip and palate].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to apply nasoalveolar molding appliance in infants with cleft lip and plate and to observe the preliminary effects on nasal cartilage and columella. METHODS: Ten infants were treated with nasoalveolar molding. The other ten infants without any presurgical orthopedic treatment were chosen as the control group. Each patient was photographed at the initial visit (T0), after nasoalveolar molding (T1), 2 weeks (T2), and half a year (T3) after cheiloplasty. Six measurements were made on the photographs and the nasal symmetry was analyzed with paired t test. RESULTS: The percentage of the deviation from perfect symmetry was significantly improved at T0-T1, T1-T2 stage (P<0.05), and the improvement relapsed at T2-T3 (P<0.05). There was significant difference between the orthopedic group and the control group with the changes in nasal symmetry in vertical dimension (P<0.01), and there was no significant difference in horizontal dimension (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Nasal asymmetry was significantly improved after nasoalveolar molding. Half a year after the primary cheiloplasty, although there was a relapse tendency of nasal asymmetry, the shape of the nasal dome was ideal.

Toward a global analysis of the human pituitary proteome by multiple gel-based technology.

We describe a comprehensive method for the analysis of complex proteomes, multiple gel-based technology (MGT), which combines in-gel IEF-LC-MS/MS and SDS-PAGE-LC-MS/MS strategies. MGT was applied to the analysis of the proteome of human pituitary tissue. A total of 1449 proteins were uniquely identified. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive proteomic analysis of human pituitary tissue to date. Categorization of the identified proteins revealed that MGT provides an excellent and largely unbiased access to proteins with diverse characteristics, including low-abundance proteins, membrane proteins, and proteins with extremes in pI and MW.

[Clinical efficiency of interventional therapy on internal carotid-posterior communicating artery aneurysm].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of endovascular embolization of internal carotid-posterior communicating artery (IC-PC) aneurysm. METHODS: 145 patients with IC-PC aneurysms underwent endovascular embolization through the microcatheter under digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Of the 145 cases, 55 patients with 62 aneurysms were embolized by mechanical detachable spiral (MDS) and 90 patients with 106 aneurysms were embolized by Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) or electrical detachable coil (EDC). RESULTS: 168 aneurysms in 145 patients, 96 of which with 100% embolization, 45 with 95% embolization, 15 with 90% embolization, and 12 with less than 90% embolization, were embolized successfully. During the surgery, aneurysm rupture occurred in 3 cases, cerebral vasospasm in 5, and cerebral infarction in 1 case. 118 cases were cured, 23 improved, and 3 died. 17 patients were followed-up by DSA, 3 aneurysms recurred and 2 were totally embolized with EDC for the second time. CONCLUSION: Endovascular embolization is a safe and effective therapeutic method for IC-PC aneurysm.

[The study of maxillary protraction face mask combined with orthodontics for complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of maxillary protraction face mask combined with orthodontics on complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients' jaws. METHODS: 14 patients with complete unilateral cleft of lip and palate were included. Lateral cephalometric films were taken before orthodontic treatment ,before protracting and after orthodontic treatment. The statistical data were compared and analysed by SPSS10.0. Student's t test was used to determine the effect of maxillary protraction face mask combined with orthodontic treatment on jaw growth before and after treatment. RESULTS: The treatment resulted in good outcomes: incisor's overjet of 2mm, stable occlusion and straight profile. The SNA angle had a significant increase (P<0.001). The SNB angle and mandibular plane angle (SN-MP) have no change (P>0.05). The convexity of angle had significant change (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Orthopedic force combined orthodontic treatment on patients with UCLP can promote the development of maxilla, without significant effect on the mandible. The overjet and overbite were improved by increasing the clination of upper anterior teeth, compensating lingually on lower anterior teeth and moving the upper anterior forward. The profile was improved from concave to straight, maxillary protrusion was increased, upper lip was plumpand, and the relationship between upper and lower jaws was more compatible.

[Study on the changes of TMJ stress before and after sagittal split ramus osteotomy by 3D finite element method].

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristic changes of the TMJ stress distributions, before and after SSRO for treating the skeletal class III malocclusion, being during centric occlusion. METHODS: CT scan was used to obtain 2-D transverse image of maxilla and mandible. Finite element models were established before and after SSRO. An analysis of the stress, strain, and displacement of TMJ configurations was done by three-finite element method. Paired t test was used to compare the stress before and after operation. RESULTS: The Von Mises stress on TMJ configurations was found to decrease significantly after mandibular set-back SSRO; The maximal and minimal principal stress and maximal displacement were also found to decrease after surgery; The stress of both sides of the TMJ was found to distribute symmetrically. CONCLUSION: Oral and maxillofacial deformity was treated by orthognathics surgery, jaws were repositional that induce the changes of the TMJ stress, the upper and lower further study should be done to determine the stress changes effecting the function and health of TMJ.

[Combined orthodontic and orthognathic therapy on skeletal class II division 1 malocclusion in adults].

PURPOSE: To Introduce a combined orthodontic and orthognathic method for treatment of skeletal class II division 1 malocclusion in adults. METHODS: In orthodontic-surgical treatment on skeletal class II division 1 malocclusion in adults, the goal of orthodontics was to remove the compensation of upper and lower anterior teeth, leveling Spee's curve, adjusting relationship of the upper and lower dentition arch for intercuspid bite after surgery. The goal of orthodontics before surgery was visual treatment objective (OTV), model surgery and making of bite-plate. To achieve these goals, a combined orthodontic and orthognathic method for treatment of skeletal class II division 1 malocclusion in adults was adopted in this study. RESULTS: Stable function of stomotognathicia and satisfactory facial aesthetics after treatment were obtained. CONCLUSION: Oral and maxillofacial deformity must be treated by combining orthodontic treatment and surgical osteotomy in order to restore oral function and aesthetic appearance.

[Three-dimensional CT angiography with volume rendering for the detection of intracranial aneurysms].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of three-dimensional CT angiography (3D-CTA) with volume rendering (VR) for the detection of intracranial aneurysm. METHODS: Axial CT images were obtained by helical CT scanning on 45 patients with intracranial aneurysms, 15 males and 30 females, aged 63.9 (33-79 years). The primitive data were entered into the Silicon Graphics O2 board to be treated. VR technique was adopted to reconstruct 3D-CTA imaging, aided by multiplanar reformation to obtain the total volume of aneurysm. Among the 45 patients 25 underwent DSA simultaneously, 21 underwent clamping of aneurysm, and 3 underwent GDC thrombosis. RESULTS: Fifty-nine intracranial aneurysms were detected in 45 patients by 3D-CTA, including 32 small aneurysms (< or = 5 mm). 3D-CTA with VR well demonstrated aneurysms and provided useful information including the site, shape, size and spatial relationship to the surrounding vessels and bony structures. CONCLUSION: A quick, reliable, and relatively noninvasive diagnostic tool for intracranial aneurysms, 3D-CTA with VR delineates the aneurysmal morphology in detail, and provides useful information for choosing and planning microsurgical or endovascular treatment.

New method for calculating right ventricular ejection fraction using gated myocardial perfusion studies.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) is important in patients who have right heart failure or cor pulmonale. When Tl-201 was the primary radiotracer used to evaluate myocardial perfusion, the outline of the right ventricle could vary and was not visualized in most patients. However, visualization of the right ventricle has become easier with the use of Tc-99m-labeled myocardial perfusion agents. PURPOSE: This study describes a new method for quantifying RVEF using gated stress myocardial perfusion (GMP) slices. The results are compared with those of first-pass radionuclide ventriculography (FPRNA) in the same patients. METHODS: Fifty-two consecutive patients referred for routine GMP imaging were included. After administration of Tc-99m tetrofosmin, all patients underwent FPRNA using a single crystal gamma camera and a GMP study. Regions of interest (ROI) were drawn to outline the right ventricular cavity at end diastole and end systole from three pairs of GMP slices. The RVEF was calculated from the number of pixels within the ROIs. The mean RVEF obtained using FPRNA and GMP imaging was 51.8 +/- 10.8% and 51.9 +/- 12.3%, respectively. The two methods showed good correlation with r = 0.81. In addition, there was no significant difference in the RVEFs calculated using these methods (P = 0.85). Bland-Altman analysis also showed good agreement between the two methods (limits of agreement +14.4% to -14.0%, slope = 0.19). Intraobserver and interobserver correlation were evaluated by reanalyzing 12 patients using the new RVEF quantification method and were good at r = 0.87 and 0.82, respectively. Therefore, this is a new convenient method for evaluating RVEF as part of a routine tomographic gated myocardial perfusion study.

[The ratio of soft and hard after bimaxillary operations in patients with skeletal class III malformations].

OBJECTIVE: To study the ratio between soft and hard tissue on the horizontal plane after the operations of maxillary Le Fort I advancement osteotomy and mandibular setback osteotomy in patient with skeletal class III malformations. It can help to predict precisely the post-operational profile. METHODS: 20 patients with skeletal class III malformation were taken cephalometric films pre-and post-operationally. The coordinate of landmarks were given from two films by computer analysis system. Different values in X axis were analysed statistically. RESULTS: All mandibular soft tissue landmarks were correlated with hard tissue landmarks (r<0.5, P>0.05). The ratios were 1:1 except the Pogonion(<1:1). Point of Sn was not correlated with the maxillary hard tissue significantly(r<0.5, P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The poor correlation between maxillary Sn and hard tissue was affected by many factors. It is easy to mark the mandible landmarks clearly. The ratio should help to predict the post-operation profile in patients with skeletal class III malformations.
