HIV-related risk behaviors and history of sexually transmitted diseases among male migrants who patronize commercial sex in China.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Men who pay for sexual services are at increased risk for HIV/sexually transmitted disease. Data on the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of such men in China are limited. STUDY DESIGN: Two cross-sectional surveys, using similar instruments, were completed among Chinese migrants in Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing in 2002. A total of 1304 rural-to-urban migrant men from community settings ("community sample") and 465 migrant men attending sexually transmitted disease clinics ("STD clinic sample") were included in the current study. RESULTS: Ten percent of men in the community sample and 32.7% of men in the STD clinic sample reported having ever paid for sex. Nearly 20% of clients from the community sample and 60% of clients from the STD clinic sample reported a history of STDs. For both the community and STD clinic samples, working at industrial or construction sectors, multiple sexual partners, regular sex partner having sex with others, and a history of drug use were associated with being a male client. In addition, perceived peer sexual risk and perceived vulnerability to STD were associated with being a male client in the community sample, and a history of STD and being tested for STD/HIV were associated with being a male client in the STD sample. CONCLUSION: Male migrants who paid for sex in China were vulnerable to HIV/STDs. HIV prevention efforts should target young migrant men who work at factory and construction sectors. STD clinics may be important sites for outreach and intervention efforts among male clients.

Electrochemical treatment of paper mill wastewater using three-dimensional electrodes with Ti/Co/SnO2-Sb2O5 anode.

The properties of the interlayer and outer layer of Ti/Co/SnO2-Sb2O5 electrode were studied, and the electrochemical behavior was examined as well. As a result of unsatisfactory treatment using Ti/Co/SnO2-Sb2O5 electrode, electrochemical disposal of paper mill wastewater employing three-dimensional electrodes, combining active carbon granules serving as packed bed particle electrodes, with Ti/Co/SnO2-Sb2O5 anode, was performed. The outcome demonstrates that efficient degradation was achieved. The residual dimensionless chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration reached 0.137, and color removal 75% applying 167 mA cm(-2) current density at pH 11 and 15 g l(-1) NaCl. The instant current efficiency, energy cost, electrochemical oxidation index (EOI) and kinetic constant of the reaction were calculated. At the same time, the influence of pH and current density on COD abatement and decolorization was also investigated, respectively.

Multi-dark-state resonances in cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms.

We present our experimental and theoretical studies of multi-dark-state resonances (MDSRs) generated in a unique cold rubidium atomic system with only one coupling laser beam. Such MDSRs are caused by different transition strengths of the strong coupling beam connecting different Zeeman sublevels. Controlling the transparency windows in such an electromagnetically induced transparency system can have potential applications in multiwavelength optical communication and quantum information processing.

Application of molybdenum and phosphate modified kaolin in electrochemical treatment of paper mill wastewater.

Pulp and paper mill wastewater is characterized by very high chemical oxygen demand (COD) values that inhibit the activity of microorganisms during biological oxidations. The electrochemical degradation of pulp and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by molybdenum and phosphate (Mo-P) modified kaolin with graphite as anode and cathode was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM spectra and the effects of pH, metal ion and introduction of NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical degradation process were also studied. It was found out that the modified kaolin loaded with Fe(3+) had higher electrochemical catalytic activity in the electrochemical degradation of paper mill wastewater at pH 4. A 96% COD removal efficiency was obtained in 40min of electrochemical treatment of the wastewater at current density 30mAcm(-2). A possible mechanism for degradation of the mill wastewater constituents was also proposed.

Stereoselective synthesis of the phorboxazole A macrolide by ring-closing metathesis.

[Structure: see text] Described is a regio- and stereoselective ring-closing metathesis (RCM) to form the C2-C3 alkene of the macrolide-containing domain of phorboxazole A. This work demonstrates a dramatic effect of reaction solvent on RCM product (E/Z)-selectivity. This process offers an alternative assembly of the macrolide-containing domain of phorboxazole A, one of the most potent anticancer agents known.

Preparation and XPS studies of macromolecule mixed-valent Cu(I, II) and Fe(II, III) complexes.

A new macromolecule ligand and its mixed-valent Cu(I, II) and Fe(II, III) complexes have been prepared by using ethylenediamine as core and maleic anhydride as branched units and characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, thermal analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The data obtained from these studies suggested that the coordinate bonds of N-->M, Cl-->M, Ph-OH-->M and H(2)O-->M have been formed and possible binding models are proposed for these complexes. The thermal analysis (TG-DTG) reveals that these complexes possess thermal stable property below 800 degrees C.

Effect of traditional Chinese medicine Qin-Dan-Jiang-Ya-Tang on remodeled vascular phenotype and osteopontin in spontaneous hypertensive rats.

Qin-Dan-Jiang-Ya-Tang (QDJYT) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of hypertension. The effect of QDJYT on blood pressure and on vascular remodeling in hypertension was investigated in the model of spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR). Sixteen SHRs were divided into two groups, the SHR group and the SHR+QDJYT group. Eight WKY rats were a normal control group. QDJYT (750 mg/kg) was orally administered daily for 12 weeks in SHR+QDJYT group. After 12 weeks, thoracic aortas were segregated. Media thickness (MT), lumen diameter (LD), the ratio of MT to LD, the volume fraction of collagen (VFC) in media, the ultrastructure of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the expression of osteopontin (OPN) mRNA were examined by histological staining, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and real-time PCR, respectively. It was observed in our study that MT, MT/LD, VFC and the expression of OPN mRNA were higher in the SHRs than in the WKY rats, volume and numeral density of mitochondria in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in media increased obviously. However, in the SHRs treated with QDJYT, we found MT, MT/LD, VFC and the expression of OPN gene were lower than in the SHRs, and the phenotype of VSMCs were close to normal. These results suggest that QDJYT could reverse the vascular remodeling in SHR, and the mechanisms may be related to the suppressive effect of QDJYT on the expression of OPN mRNA in arterial wall.

[Study on cases of nasal tumors treated by dermatologic surgery: analysis of 63 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study 63 cases of nasal tumors treated by dermatologic surgery, and analyze their generality and characters. METHODS: The cases were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 and SAS6.12. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 46.92 +/- 18.63. The number of man was about equal to that of women. Most cases were basal cell carcinoma (42.9%). Nevus came second (38.1%). The other cases were benign tumors. The distribution of operational locations showed the character of nasal surgery. Operations of Alar occupied 52.4%, 22.2% were on the dorsal and 15.9% on the tip. Other locations occupied 9.5%. Cases of primary close occupied 69.8%. Cases applying complex close were 30.2%. Statistic analysis illustrated that primary close was different from complex close with distribution of operational locations. The area of defects between primary close and complex close was also different. At the same time, the differentiation of applying complex close was obvious between malignant tumors and benign tumors. CONCLUSION: Skin cancers and benign tumors usually occur on the nose, so it is very important to master the techniques of plastic surgery to repair the defects of nose, besides removing tumors perfectly by the classical way of dermatologic surgery, Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Electrochemical oxidation of pulp and paper making wastewater assisted by transition metal modified kaolin.

The electrochemical oxidation of pulp and paper making wastewater assisted by transition metal (Co, Cu) modified kaolin in a 200 ml electrolytic batch reactor with graphite plate as electrodes was investigated. H(2)O(2), which produced on the surface of porous graphite cathode, would react with the catalysts to form strong oxidant (hydroxyl radicals) that can in turn destroy the pollutants adsorbed on the surface of kaolin. The transition metal (Co, Cu) modified kaolin was also characterized by XRD and SEM before and after the modification and the results showed that the transition metals were completely supported on kaolin and formed a porous structure with big BET surface. The mechanism was proposed on the basis of XPS analysis of the catalyst after the degradation process. Series of experiments were also done to prove the synergetic effect of the combined oxidation system and to find out the optimal operating parameters such as initial pH, current density and amount of catalyst. From the results it can be founded that when the initial pH was at 3, current density was 30 mA cm(-2); catalyst dose was 30 g dm(-3), COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal could reach up to 96.8% in 73 min.

Chiral magnetic metal-organic frameworks of dimetal subunits: magnetism tuning by mixed-metal compositions of the solid solutions.

The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

A method on calculating high-dimensional mutual information and its application to registration of multiple ultrasound images.

Using mutual information as a criterion for medical image registration, which requires no prior segmentation or preprocessing, has been both theoretically and practically proved to be an effective method in these years. However, this technique is confined in registering two images and hard to apply to multiple ones. The reason is that unlike mutual information between two variables, high-dimensional mutual information is ill defined. In textbooks and theoretical essays, three-dimensional mutual information is proposed based on Venn diagram. Unfortunately, mutual information defined in this way is not necessarily nonnegative. In order to overcome the problem, in this paper, we introduce the mutual information matrix. By calculating its eigenvalues, high-dimensional mutual information is defined. This definition is nonnegative, bounded, and could be extended to higher dimensions, thus enables us to register more than three images. In the end, this definition is tested and proved to be effective on registration of multiple US images through simulation.

Catalytic decolorization of azo-stuff with electro-coagulation method assisted by cobalt phosphomolybdate modified kaolin.

The new catalytic decoloration of C.I. Acid Red 3R with electro-coagulation (EC) method assisted by cobalt phosphomolybdate modified kaolin has been studied. The result showed that this process could effectively remove the C.I. Acid Red 3R contained in wastewater and its color removal efficiency could reach up to 98.3% in 7 min. The kinetics of the catalytic decolorization of Acid Red 3R was also studied. The decolorization reaction order was dependent on the initial concentration [R](0) with respect to the concentration of C.I. Acid Red 3R. At lower [R](0) the order was first, which then decreases with increasing [R](0). The operating parameters such as initial pH, current density and temperature were also investigated. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed.

[Experience in reoperation of lumbar spinal surgery using posterior lumbar interbody fusion cage].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the indications and surgical techniques of reoperative lumbar spinal surgery using posterior lumbar interbody fusion cage. METHODS: Seventeen cases underwent reoperative lumbar spinal surgery using posterior lumbar interbody fusion cage. The surgical methods included decompression of lumbar canal, dural and radicular conglutination release, discectomy, posterior insertion of lumbar interbody fusion cage, pedicle screw instrumentation, posterolateral lumbar fusion. Periodical follow-up was conducted for 18 months (12 - 43 months). The clinical effect was evaluated by the Macnab's criterion, and the outcome of lumbar interbody fusion was evaluated according to the Brantigan's criterion. RESULTS: Twenty-seven cages were implanted into twenty-three disc spaces (cage at L(3 - 4) in 5 cases, cage at L(4 - 5) in 8 cases, and cage at L(5)-S(1) in 4 cases). All postoperative patients ambulated after two weeks. No wound healing problems and nerve injury were found. Dural rupture occurred in 5 cases, but without occurrence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage. According to the Macnab's criterion, the preoperative lower extremity radicular symptoms and neurogenic claudication were effectively relieved in 15 cases (88.2%), and the outcomes were good or excellent in 15 cases (88.2%). According to the Brantigan's criterion no evidence of implant failure was found, and interbody fusion could be achieved about 6 months in all patients. No additional operation was needed for involved segments, and the surgical outcomes could be maintained. CONCLUSION: A good and effective method, use of posterior lumbar interbody fusion cage in reoperative lumbar spinal surgery eliminates neural compression and the discogenic pain, restore the lumbar alignment, and accomplish the internal fixation and anterior column fusion of lumbar vertebrae simultaneously.

High nucleophilicity of cyclic amidocarbene toward aryl isocyanates, new approach to spiro[azetidinone-4,3'-indolinone] derivatives.

The nucleophilic addition of beta-lactam-4-ylidenes 2, a type of ambiphilic cyclic amidocarbene, to aryl isocyanates has been studied and their application in organic synthesis has been demonstrated. Thermolysis of spiro[beta-lactam-4,2'-oxadiazolines] 1 in the presence of aryl isocyanates afforded both N-lactam and O-lactam substituted spiro[azetidine-2-one-4,3'-indole-2'-one] derivatives 5 and 6 in the total yield of 65-86%. Upon hydrolysis, products 5 and 6 were converted into spiro[azetidine-2-one-4,3'-indole-2'-one] 9 that was analogous to known biologically active compounds.

Electrochemical catalytic treatment of wastewater by metal ion supported on cation exchange resin.

The electrochemical oxidation of phenol in synthetic wastewater and paper mill wastewater catalyzed by metal ion supported on cation exchange resin in suspended bed electrolytic reactor with graphite electrode has been investigated. The catalyst was characterized by SEM and XPS spectra and the effects of pH, the different metal ion and NaCl on the efficiency of the electrochemical oxidation phenol process were also studied. It was found that the catalyst containing Fe(3+) had the highest electrochemical catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol. When the initial concentration of phenol was 200 ppm, up to 90% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was obtained in 10 min. When the catalyst containing Fe(3+) was used to the paper mill wastewater, it still showed high efficiency. The COD removal could get to 75% in 60 min.

Segmental instability in cervical spondylotic myelopathy with severe disc degeneration.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was conducted. OBJECTIVE: To investigate relationships between severe disc degeneration (SDD) and segmental instability in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and to discuss surgical treatment for CSM with severe disc degeneration. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Information on relationships between segmental instability and spinal cord compression in CSM with severe disc degeneration is scarce. METHODS: Radiographs and magnetic resonance images of patients with CSM with (n = 42) and without (n = 75) SDD were reviewed retrospectively. Cervical instability and spinal cord compression factors were analyzed. Outcomes of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) and expansive laminoplasty (ELAP) were evaluated in medical records of follow-up clinics. RESULTS: Segmental instability was found in 71.4% of patients with SDD and 22.7% of patients without SDD. Spinal cord compression was found at the intervertebral space of SDD and upper adjacent disc space. The recovery rate of ACDF and ELAP was 60.8% and 57.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The upper adjacent vertebra above SDD has inclination of segmental instability. There is static spinal cord compression in intervertebral spaces of SDD and dynamic compression in upper adjacent intervertebral spaces. Multilevel anterior cervical decompression and fusion or expansive laminoplasty should be used for surgical treatment.

Synthesis and pharmacological activities of xanthone derivatives as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.

Considerable interest has been attracted in xanthone and its derivatives because of their large variety of pharmacological activities. In this project, a series of hydroxylxanthones and their acetoxy and alkoxy derivatives were synthesized and evaluated as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, aimed at clarifying the structure-activity correlation. The results indicated that these xanthone derivatives were capable of inhibiting in vitro alpha-glucosidase with moderate to good activities. Among them, polyhydroxylxanthones exhibited the highest activities and thus may be exploitable as a lead compound for the development of potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.
