Comparative study of proteome between primary cancer and hepatic metastatic tumor in colorectal cancer.

AIM: To identify the differential proteins associated with colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis. METHODS: Hydrophobic protein samples were extracted from normal colorectal mucosa, primary cancer lesion and hepatic metastatic foci of colorectal cancer. With two-dimensional electrophoresis and image analysis, differentially expressed protein spots were detected, and the proteins were identified by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry and peptide mass fingerprint analysis. RESULTS: Significant alterations of the proteins in number and expression levels were discovered in primary cancer and hepatic metastatic foci, the expression of a number of proteins was lost in 25-40 ku, but protein spots was increased in 14-21 ku, compared with normal mucosa. Nine differentially expressed protein spots were identified. Three proteins expressed in normal mucosa, but lost in primary cancer and hepatic metastasis, were recognized as calmodulin, ribonuclease 6 precursor and mannosidase-alpha. Proapolipoprotein was expressed progressively from normal mucosa to primary cancer and hepatic metastasis. The differentially expressed protein of beta-globin was found in normal mucosa and hepatic metastatic tumor, but lost in primary cancer lesion. Cdc 42, a GTP-binding protein, was identified in hepatic metastasis. The protein spots of C4 from primary cancer, M7 and M9 from hepatic metastasis had less homology with the proteins in database. CONCLUSION: Variations of hydrophobic protein expression in colorectal cancer initiation and hepatic metastasis are significant and can be observed with two-dimensional electrophoresis. The expression of calmodulin, ribonuclease 6 precursor and mannosidase-alpha is lost but the expression of proapolipoprotein is enhanced which is associated with colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis. Cdc 42 and beta-globin are expressed abnormally in hepatic metastasis. Protein C4, M7 and M9 may be associated with colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis.

Solvent effect on mineral modification: selective synthesis of cerium compounds by a facile solution route.

A mild solution method has been designed for the selective synthesis of orthorhombic and hexagonal CeOHCO(3), as well as cubic CeO(2) crystals in an ethanol/water mixed solvent. This study added a new example for selectively controlling different cerium compounds by manipulating the balance between kinetics and thermodynamics in a mixed solvent system. The competitive reactions taking place in the ethanol/water system, phase transition, and shape evolution were fully investigated: they were found to be strongly dependent on the composition of the reaction media. The influence of the ethanol content in the mixed solvent and that of the reaction time on the phase transition and shape of orthorhombic and hexagonal CeOHCO(3) crystals is discussed in detail. Metastable hexagonal CeOHCO(3) can be trapped, even at 80 degrees C, in the ethanol/water solvent mixture without the need for the high temperature adopted by previous hydrothermal approaches. The evolution process of orthorhombic and metastable hexagonal phases under mild solution conditions is discussed for the first time. Supersaturation will become faster and more evident when water is replaced by ethanol, because the inorganic salts have a lower solubility in ethanol than in water, and this will generally favor the formation of the kinetic phase, such as the hexagonal CeOHCO(3) phase reported in this paper. The optical properties of the products with different phases and composition were investigated.

[Proteome study of colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis].

OBJECTIVE: To study differential expression proteins associated with colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis with proteomic techniques. METHODS: Using isoelectric focusing/SDS acrylamide gel two-dimensional electrophoresis to analyse differential expression protein spots among normal colorectal mucosa, primary cancer lesion and hepatic metastasis. Peptide mass fingerprinting was used to identify the differential proteins. RESULTS: Significant differences of protein expression were found on two-dimensional electrophoresis. Nine differential protein spots were analysed and identified. Calmodulin, ribonuclease 6 precursor and protein XP_040720 (mannosidase-alpha) were detected in normal colorectal mucosa, but lost in primary cancer lesion and hepatic metastasis. Proapolipoprotein was expressed progressively from normal mucosa to primary cancer and hepatic metastasis. Expression of beta-globin was found in normal mucosa and hepatic metastasis, but not in primary cancer lesion. Cdc42 was a differential expression protein in hepatic metastasis. Peptide mass fingerprints of differential protein spot C4, M7 and M9 had low homology with database proteins, they were candidates of associated proteins with colorectal cancer genesis and hepatic metastasis. CONCLUSION: Loss of calmodulin, ribonuclease 6 precursor and mannosidase-alpha expression are associated with colorectal cancer genesis. Enhancement expression of proapolipoprotein is related with colorectal genesis and hepatic metastasis. Cdc42 and beta-globin are associated proteins with hepatic metastasis of colorectal cancer.

[The construction of yeast two-hybrid method in the protein-interactions and its significance in hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To construct the yeast two-hybrid system, and screen the proteins which interact with FasL, and investigate the relationship of FasL and hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: We have cloned the FasL gene into the pGBKT7 vector as the bait, then screened the fetal liver cDNA library, and have got a series of specific proteins that interact with FasL protein. Using the bioinformatics, we analyzed the interacting proteins in the mechanism of hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma. RESULTS: We have screened several proteins that interaction with FasL protein, including metallothionein 1K, 1G, 2A, cathepsin B, fatty acid synthase, interferon alpha-inducible protein 27, phospholipid scramblase, Ser/Thr-like kinase, anchor attachment protein, fibulin-5. CONCLUSIONS: We have successfully constructed the yeast two-hybrid system, and preliminary identified that the interaction between FasL, metallothionein, cathepsin and anchor attachment protein is radically related to the hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of transrectal ultrasound in detecting and deciding rectal cancer margin and surgical incisal edge. METHODS: 33 surgical specimens of rectal carcinoma were examined with transrectal ultrasound. Cancerous margin and surgical incisal edge were determined. The results were compared with pathological examination. p53 and K-ras gene mutation as tumor molecular markers of residue cancer cells were detected in incisal edge tissue with PCR-SSCP method. RESULTS: General accuracy for cancer infiltration depth with transrectal ultrasound was 86.6%. For mucosa and submucosa infiltration lesions, the accuracy was 72.7%. For lamina muscularis, the accuracy was 90.9%. And for adventitia and peripheral tissue infiltration of rectum, the accuracy was 88.5% and 100% respectively. No remains of cancer cells and tumor molecular markers were detected at distal incisal edges of 1.0 cm, 2.0 cm and 3.0 cm determined with transrectal ultrasound. CONCLUSIONS: Rectal cancer margine and surgical incisal edge determined with transrectal ultrasound are close to examined by pathology. Transrectal ultrasound is helpful and reliable to define incisal edge in rectal cancer surgery.

[A clinical study of 214 cases of modified radical mastectomy with preservation of major and minor pectoral muscles].

OBJECTIVE: To study clinical effects of modified radical mastectomy with preservation of major and minor pectoral muscles. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out in 214 cases of breast cancer patients (including stage I 66 cases, stage II 141 cases and stage III 7 cases). Modified radical mastectomy with preservation of major and minor pectoral muscles was performed on all the patients. RESULTS: Out of 214 cases, 12 (5.6%) had subcutaneous fluid, 16 (7.4%) had skin flap margin necrosis. Upper limb lymphatic edema was found in 8 (3.7%) patients, and pectoral muscle contracture with dyspraxia of upper arm occurred in 11 (5.1%) cases. Three year survival rate was 82.3% and five year survival rate was 63.4%. For stage I patients, the five year survival rate attained to 79.6%, and stage II 56.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Preservation of lateral branch of pectoral nerve can avoid complication of pectoral muscle contracture with dyspraxia of upper arm. Early chemotherapy of postoperation prevents breast cancer occurrence and metastasis. Comprehensive treat approaches for operative wound avert subcutaneous fluid, and complex therapy improves long-term effect of breast cancer patients.

[Cell membrane phospholipid variation and protein kinase C expression effects on hepatic metastasis of large intestinal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To study cell membrane phospholipid variation and protein kinase C (PKC) isoenzyme expression and their effects on hepatic metastasis of large intestinal carcinoma. METHODS: High function liquid chromatography was used to separate and detect cell membrane phospholipids of phosphatidylinosital (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in primary foci, paratumor intestine mucosa and hepatic metastasis of large intestinal carcinomas. And mRNA expression levels of PKC-alpha, -beta II, -delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta isoenzymes were detected using QRT-PCR technique. RESULTS: Fifty-eight cases of colorectal cancer were examined. CONTENTS: of PI, PC and PE in primary foci and hepatic metastasis were higher than those in paratumor mucosa. PE content in hepatic metastasis was much higher than that in primary foci (t = 98.88, P < 0.01). But PI and PC contents had no significant differences between primary and hepatic metastasis (t = 1.73, 1.36, P > 0.05). PKC-beta II, -delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta expression were enhanced in primary foci and hepatic metastasis, but PKC-alpha level decreased in comparison with paratumor mucosa. And PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta levels in hepatic metastasis were higher than those in primary foci (t = 4.31, P < 0.05). PI and PC had positive correlations with PKC-beta II expression. PE had positive correlations with PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta, but a negative correlation with PKC-alpha. CONCLUSIONS: The increases of PI and PC and PKC-alpha/PKC-beta II ratio change are related with colorectal cancer genesis. High content of PE and enhanced expression of PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta isoenzymes and decreased PKC-alpha level improved hepatic metastasis of large intestinal carcinoma.

Pulse-coupled neural networks for contour and motion matchings.

Two neural networks based on temporal coding are proposed in this paper to perform contour and motion matchings. Both of the proposed networks are three-dimensional (3-D) pulse-coupled neural networks (PCNNs). They are composed of simplified Eckhorn neurons and mimic the structure of the primary visual cortex. The PCNN for contour matching can segment from the background the object with a particular contour, which has been stored as prior knowledge and controls the network activity in the form of spike series; The PCNN for motion matching not only detects the motion in the visual field, but also extracts the object moving in an arbitrarily specified direction. The basic idea of these two models is to encode information into the timing of spikes and later to decode this information through coincidence detectors and synapse delays to realize the knowledge-controlled object matchings. The simulation results demonstrate that the temporal coding and the decoding mechanisms are powerful enough to perform the contour and motion matchings.

Management of chyle fistula utilizing thoracoscopic ligation of the thoracic duct.

OBJECTIVES: To document the treatment of refractory chyle leaks using thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation and provide systematic guidelines to manage chyle leaks. METHODS: The medical records of 2 patients with chyle leaks are reviewed, followed by a review of the literature on chyle leaks and their thoracoscopic management. CONCLUSIONS: Initial treatment of chyle fistula is aimed at conservative medical management. Persistent high-output fistulas (>500 cm(3)) should be considered for neck reexploration as conservative management is likely to fail. Thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation provides a safe and efficient means of treating chyle leaks refractory to repeated surgical and medical intervention. It should also be considered as a primary surgical intervention for patients with: (1) chyle output exceeding 500 cm(3)/day where prior intraoperative attempts at ligation have failed, (2) severe metabolic and nutritional complications, (3) coexisting chylothorax with respiratory compromise, and (4) low-output fistulas (<500 cm(3)/day) of long duration (>14 days).

Influence of FasL gene expression on hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: FasL expression was reported to be associated with hepatic metastasis of colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to study FasL gene expression in colorectal carcinoma and its influences on biological behavior and hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: FasL gene expressions were examined with reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the primary focus of colorectal carcinoma, adjacent cancerous mucosae, and metastasized liver focus from colorectal cancer. HR-8348 cells of human rectal cancer cell line were transfected with FasL cDNA. Cell growth suppression rate and response to 5-FU and carboplatin were observed and analyzed with the MTT method. RESULTS: FasL gene expression was detected in the primary focus of colorectal cancer (n=58), adjacent cancerous mucosae (n=58), and metastasized hepatic tumor tissues (n=28). The positive rate of FasL expression was 24% (14/58), 8% (5/58), and 100% (58/58) in the primary focus, adjacent cancerous mucosae and metastasized hepatic tumor tissues respectively. FasL expression rate in the metastasized hepatic tumor tissues was higher than that in the primary focus (X(2)=43.49, P<0.01) and adjacent cancerous mucosae (X(2)=57.66, P<0.01). In a group of patients with hepatic metastasis, the FasL expression rate in primary focus was higher than that in patients without hepatic metastasis (X(2)=3.96, P<0.05). In vitro study positive expression of FasL was shown in transfected HR-8348 cells. When 5-FU or carboplatin was added, there was a significant difference in growth suppression rate between FasL positive and controlled cancer cells (t=9.02, t=11.93, P<0.01). Under the same concentration of chemotherapeutic agents, the survival rate of FasL positive HR-8348 cells was higher than that of controlled cells. CONCLUSIONS: FasL positive cancer cells are powerfully resistant to chemotherapeutic agents. The expression of the FasL gene in colorectal cancer cells is related to immune evasion to escape from being killed by immune cells, showing stronger drug-resistance, and it facilitates hepatic metastasis.

[Study of beta 1-integrin in neonatal rats with ischemic renal injury].

OBJECTIVE: To study the change of beta 1-integrin in neonatal rats with ischemic renal injury. METHODS: Twenty-four neonatal rats weighing from 30 to 40 g were chosen. Anesthesia was carried out by peritoneal injection of nembutal-sodium solution (4 mg/100 g). Renal ischemic injury model was induced by clamping the left renal pedicle for different periods of time. The kidneys of normal neonatal rats were functioned as the control group. Immunofluorescence technique was used to detect the location of beta 1-integrin in kidney, especially in cortex. RESULTS: In control group, beta 1-integrin subunit was found to be located mainly in the basal membrane of tubular epithelial cell. After 10 minutes of ischemia, immunostaining highlighted the broken basement membranes of the experiment groups. The longer the ischemia continued, the more the broken points we observed. There were significant differences between the experiment groups and the control group. Yet, no significant difference in the IOD value of beta 1-integrin was seen between the 10-min-ischemia and 30-min-ischemia groups. CONCLUSION: Under physiological condition, beta 1-integrin is distributed over the basal membrane of the tubular epithelial cell of neonatal rat. Ischemic injury can cause the changes of beta 1-integrin which may be the reason of exfoliation and depolarization of tubular epithelia cell.

[The changes of beta 1-integrin and its mRNA distribution in renal tubular epithelial cells during kidney ischemia/reperfusion injury in neonatal rats].

OBJECTIVE: By studying the distribution and expression of beta 1-integrin and its mRNA in renal tubular epithelial cell at different ischemia/reperfusion time phases we probe the role of beta 1-integrin in I/R injury of neonatal animals. METHODS: The neonatal SD rat ischemia/reperfusion model was set up. Immunofluorescent staining and in situ hybridization (ISH) were used to show the distribution and expression of beta 1-integrin with its mRNA in renal tubular epithelial cells and the quantities of beta 1-integrin and its mRNA were counted by ImagePlus-Pro system. RESULTS: 1. beta 1-integrin was located at the basal plasma membrane in normal renal tubular epithelial cells. After ischemia for 0.5 h, the redistribution was not significant. After reperfusing for 0.5 h, beta 1-integrin began to move onto the lateral and apex surfaces of cells. This kind of change was most apparent after reperfusion for 2 h and was accompanied with reduced expression and destruction of renal tubular. No positive dying was seen in the lumen. The regeneration started 24 hours post-ischemia. beta 1-integrin was redistributed onto the basal plasma membrane. After reperfusion for 120 hours, the regeneration ended, but the expression did not gain the normal level. 2. The mRNA of beta 1-integrin was mainly expressed in the cell plasma. Its expression was increased while reperfusion for 0.5 h to 2 h and was still above normal level after 24 h to 120 h of reperfusion. CONCLUSION: The distribution of beta 1-integrin was "depolarized" and its expression was reduced. But the level of mRNA was raised, which indicated that during ischemia/reperfusion injury, there were mechanisms that influenced the distribution and synthesis of beta 1-integrin at the same time.

Intake of soy foods and soy isoflavones by rural adult women in China.

This study evaluated the intake of soy foods and soy isoflavones by rural adult women and potential determinant factors. Soy food consumption and information on age, education and medical history were collected on 1,188 subjects in Gansu Province and Hebei Province, China using a food frequency questionnaire to gather data on food intake over the past year. Weight and height were simultaneously measured. The results showed that 1139 (95.9%) rural women consumed soy foods in the past year. The average intake of soy foods and isoflavones was 38.7 +/- 58.2 (median = 23.5) g/d and 17.7 +/- 26.6 (median= 8.9) mg/d, respectively. Tofu accounted for the most contribution to their intake. The soy isoflavone intake ranged between 0-35 mg/day in 89.2% of subjects. Gansu women had higher intakes of soy foods and isoflavones than Henbei women (P< 0.05). Women aged 41-50 years consumed less soy foods and isoflavones than the 20-30-year olds and 31-40 year olds(P < 0.05). The intake of soy foods (P< 0.01) and isoflavones (P< 0.01) by women who experienced secondary education or above was significantly higher than illiterate women. Women without a medical history had a higher soy isoflavone intake than women with a medical history, but the difference was not statistically significant. These results suggest that the intake of soy isoflavones by Chinese rural adult women was much higher than women in Western countries. The distribution of intake was skewed to the right and varied among women in regard to region, age group and education level.

Effects of cell membrane phospholipid level and protein kinase C isoenzyme expression on hepatic metastasis of colorectal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The molecular mechanism of hepatic metastasis of colorectal cancer is not well understood. The aim of this study was to assess the relations between phospholipid contents of cellular membrane and isoenzyme expression of protein kinase C (PKC) and their effects on hepatic metastasis of colorectal cancer. METHODS: High performance liquid chromatography was used to detect contents of cell membrane phospholipids: phosphatidylinosital (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in primary foci, paratumor mucosa and hepatic metastatic foci in patients with colorectal carcinoma. The mRNA expression levels of PKC-alpha, -betaII, -delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta isoenzymes were detected with the QRT-PCR technique. RESULTS: The levels of PI, PC and PE in primary foci and hepatic metastatic foci were higher than those in paratumor mucosa. The level of PE in hepatic metastatic foci was much higher than that in primary foci (t=98.88, P<0.01); but the levels of PI and PC were not significantly different between primary foci and hepatic metastatic foci (t=1.73, 1.36, P>0.05). The expression levels of PKC-betaII, -delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta were enhanced in primary foci and hepatic metastatic foci, but the level of PKC-alpha in primary foci was decreased as compared with that in paratumor mucosa. The levels of PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta in hepatic metastatic foci were higher than those in primary foci. A positive correlation was observed between the expression levels of PI, PC and PKC-betaII and also between those of PE and PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta. However, there was a close negative correlation between PE and PKC-alpha. CONCLUSION: Increased levels of PI and PC and decreased ratio of PKC-alpha to PKC-betaII are related to colorectal cancer genesis. Increased levels of PE, increased expression of PKC-delta, -epsilon, -lambda, -zeta isoenzymes and decreased level of PKC-alpha are related to hepatic metastasis in colorectal carcinoma.

[Intake of soy isoflavones and its correlation with prevalence of chronic diseases among rural women in Weichang County and Lanzhou City in China].

To evaluate the average intake of soy isoflavones and the correlation between this intake and prevalence of chronic diseases among Chinese rural women, soy food consumption and medical history of 1188 recruited rural adult women from Weichang County (Hebei Province) and Lanzhou City (Gansu Province) were collected using food frequency questionnaire. The results showed that the intake of soy isoflavones by Weichang and Lanzhou women was (15.3 +/- 18.9) mg/d (M = 8.8) and (19.5 +/- 32.9) mg/d (M = 10.1), respectively. There had statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The distribution of soy isoflavones intake was skewed to the right. The reported disease prevalence in Weichang was 25.6% and higher than that in Lanzhou (18.8%). The average intake of soy isoflavones by healthy women was (17.8 +/- 22.8) mg/d (M = 9.5), which was higher than that by women who reported to have one of chronic diseases [(15.7 +/- 22.5) mg/d (M = 8.3)] and significantly higher than that by women who reported to have cardiovascular diseases or chronic digestive system diseases (P < 0.05). These findings indicated an inverse correlation between soy isoflavones intakes and the prevalence of chronic diseases, suggesting that soy isoflavones may play a potential role in the prevention for chronic diseases.

Stability of the Sp3-DNA complex is promoter-specific: Sp3 efficiently competes with Sp1 for binding to promoters containing multiple Sp-sites.

The transcription regulatory protein Sp3 shares more than 90% sequence homology with Sp1 in the DNA-binding domain and they bind to the same cognate DNA-element. However, the transcriptional activities of these two Sp-family factors are not equivalent. While Sp1 functions strictly as a transcriptional activator, Sp3 has been shown to be transcriptionally inactive for promoters containing multiple Sp-binding sites. In the present study, we show that the DNA-binding property of Sp3 is promoter dependent and is different from Sp1. The 116 kDa Sp3 polypeptide binds as a monomer to a single Sp-binding site but readily forms slower migrating complexes with adjacent Sp-binding sites. The slower migrating Sp3-DNA complexes are significantly more stable than monomeric Sp3-DNA complexes or multimeric Sp1-DNA complexes. As a consequence, Sp3 can efficiently compete with Sp1 for binding to regions containing multiple Sp sites. The transcription regulatory function of Sp3 is also significantly different from Sp1. Unlike Sp1, Sp3 does not synergistically activate transcription of promoters containing multiple Sp-binding sites. Therefore, although Sp3 is a transcription activator, Sp3 reduces Sp1-dependent transcription of promoters containing adjacent Sp-binding sites by competing with Sp1 for promoter occupancy and thereby blocking the synergistic transactivation function of Sp1. Taken together, this study provides a possible mechanism of the promoter-specific transcription repression function of Sp3.

Cerebral ischemia and infarction from atheroemboli <100 microm in Size.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the importance of emboli not trapped by carotid angioplasty filtration devices, we examined fragments <100 microm released with ex vivo angioplasty and asked if fragment composition and size correlated with brain injury. METHODS: Human carotid plaques (21) were excised en bloc, and ex vivo carotid angioplasty was performed. Eight plaques were selected as either highly calcified (4) or highly fibrotic (4) by high-resolution MRI (200 microm3). Fragments were counted by a Coulter counter. Before injection into male Sprague-Dawley rats, fragments from calcified and fibrotic plaques were sized with 60-, 100-, and 200-microm filters. Brain ischemia and infarction were assessed by MRI scans (7-T small-bore magnet) and by immunohistologic staining for HSP70 and NueN. RESULTS: All 5 animals injected with 100- to 200-microm calcified fragments had infarctions. One was lethal. After injection of 60- to 100-microm calcified fragments, 7 of 12 animals had cerebral infarctions, whereas only 1 of 11 had infarctions with fibrous fragments (P<0.02). HSP70 staining showed that ischemia was more common and more extensive than infarction. Ischemia was found in 10 of 12 animals after injection of calcified fragments and in 9 of 11 after injection of fibrous fragments. The mean number of 60- to 100-microm fragments released was 375+/-510; the mean number of 20- to 60-microm fragments was 34 196 (range, 2230 to 186 927). CONCLUSIONS: Hundreds of thousands of microemboli can be shed during carotid angioplasty. Fragments from calcified plaques cause greater levels of infarction than fragments from fibrous plaques, although ischemia is common with both fragment types.

Double-lumen carotid plaque: a morbid configuration.

During analysis of carotid plaque anatomy for a multicenter carotid imaging trial, we examined plaque specimens from 5 patients with double internal carotid artery lumina. Four of the 5 patients had symptoms referable to the lesion. The second lumen was noted when the plaque specimens were examined ex vivo with high-resolution (200 microm(3)) magnetic resonance imaging. Plaque structure was correctly identified in only 1 patient preoperatively. However, during retrospective review of the preoperative imaging studies, the second internal carotid artery lumen was identified in 3 patients.
