[Psychosocial factors and health status of employees].

An issue of relationship between exposure to psychosocial factors and health status of employees is presented in this review. It is difficult to find hard evidence that could reliably confirm this relationship. Methodological difliculties encountered in measuring psychosocial factors and health effects and in designing research procedures are responsible for equivocal study results. However, a huge number of articles presenting the results of numerous studies make us convinced that many human organs are targets of dangerous impact of stress evoked by job conditions. Bearing in mind that work processes and working conditions become more and snore stressogenic. one can expect that in the near future psychosocial factors will form a group of the most dangerous health hazards. Therefore, it is an urgent challenge facing the occupational health service (OHS) to adapt its system of prevention to the specificity of threats, and thus better protect employees against harmful impact of the psychosocial factors.

[Aging and psychological assessment of motor vehicle driving capability].

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present project was to determine: (a) at what age the psychomotor functions begin to decline, which would justify routine testing to assess them, and (b) at what level the declining psychomotor functions can be recognized as a contraindication against driving motor vehicles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 186 motor vehicle drivers, aged 26-64 years. The parameters examined included eye-hand coordination and reaction time. RESULTS: The analysis of the results revealed that a significantly decreased level of psychomotor function could be noted at the age of 45 years. CONCLUSIONS: It was assumed that the results of psychological tests performed by persons with 0.05% BAC can be the empirical criterion for a decline that would significantly impair the driver's work capability. The findings of our study made it possible to develop a proposal for modifying the testing procedure and the principles of certifying work capability of motor vehicle drivers.

[Social support as a modifier of response to stress: theoretical aspects and measurement].

BACKGROUND: The authors present different definitions of social support. The influence of social support on the relation between stress and its health effects is discussed. The findings of the studies on traumatic stress among police officers and fire-fighters made the authors develop a short questionnaire to measure emotional social support as related to problems at work. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A four-item questionnaire was constructed to determine the level of social support as well as to identify its providers when the subject is nervous or under strain due to work-related problems. A group of police officers (n = 102) was examined twice to assess the psychometric characteristics of the questionnaire. RESULTS: Discrimination power of the questionnaire items was satisfactory. Internal reliability and stability of the results appeared to be at the acceptable level. Factor analysis confirmed that the theoretical structure of the questionnaire was correct. CONCLUSIONS: The questionnaire proved to be a useful and economical instrument for measuring emotional social support. It may be administered in research projects focused on the modifying role of social support in the relation between job stress and health.

Theoretical assumptions and psychometric characteristics of the sense of personal control at work questionnaire.

UNLABELLED: Personal control is a very important determinant of stress experienced at work. This variable is taken into account in different models of stress, and its role in the relationship between stress and stress effects has been studied in many research projects. But there is still lack of in-depth theoretical considerations on various definitions of control, which would allow to develop precise operationalization of this phenomenon. The following issues are discussed in this paper: 1) theoretical assumptions important for proper construction of the Sense of Personal Control at Work (SPCW); 2) the origins of SPCW Questionnaire; 3) the results of empirical study on psychometric characteristics of the SPCW Questionnaire. A group of 160 subjects participated in the study; the SPCW Questionnaire was administered twice with a 2-week interval; at the first stage, it was used together with other instruments, such as Maslach Burnout Inventory, Stress at Work Questionnaire, Work Satisfaction Scale, general Health Questionnaire-28. Reliability coefficients: Cronbach alpha = 0.81; r(tt) = 0.69. VALIDITY: correlation coefficients between personal control and work satisfaction r = 0.44; stress at work r = -0.33; emotional exhaustion r = -0.28; personal accomplishment r = 0.25; depersonalisation r = 4.26; mental health r = -0.19. Exploratory factors analysis have not confirmed theoretical structure of the SPCW Questionnaire.

[Evaluation of the computerized program in stress testing in workplace].

The aim of the study was to design a computerized version of two paper-pencil questionnaires: "Objective Work Characteristics" and "Subjective Work Characteristics". The methods allowed to objectively assess the level of occupational stress related to a given work post and to obtain its subjective assessment as perceived by the employees. The computerized version of the questionnaires contributed to fast identification of psychological factors present at workplace and their influence on the level of stress experienced by individual employees. The computer programming simplified scoring, as well as proved to be helpful in a detailed analysis of psychosocial characteristics of the work post and developing periodical reports in any time interval from 0.5 to 5 years. The efficiency of the program was verified on the basis of the study carried out in five sanitary and epidemiological stations located in the city of Łódź. A group of experts evaluated the level of stress at six work posts and 140 workers provided the self-assessment of occupational stress experienced at work. The data were collected and calculated in two databases of the statistical program SPSS+ and the originally designed application. The comparisons of the results obtained in these two programs showed no differences which proved the proper functioning of the program.

The Subjective Rating Scales for Measurement of Mental Workload-Thurstonian Scaling.

Subjective rating scales for measuring work demands and individual capabilities to cope with work requirements were developed using the Thurstonian procedure. The scales measure six dimensions of mental workload: mental difficulties, feeling of responsibility, awareness of risk, interpersonal conflicts, monotony, and time pressure. Individual scale results make it possible to assess the level of mental workload understood as a relation between the subjective rating of work demands and individual capabilities in each of the six dimensions. Two versions of scales were prepared: classic and modified ones. To assess the level of reliability of the particular scales, 481 participants were examined twice at a 1-month interval. A procedure to prepare scales for the measurement of other dimensions of mental workload is also presented.
