Metal ion sensing novel calix[4]crown fluoroionophore with a two-photon absorption property.

1,3-Alternate calix[4]arene-based fluorescent chemosensors bearing two-photon absorbing chromophores have been synthesized, and their sensing behaviors toward metal ions were investigated via absorption band shifts as well as one- and two-photon fluorescence changes. Free ligands absorb the light at 461 nm and weakly emit their fluorescence at 600 nm when excited by UV-vis radiation at 461 nm, but no two-photon excited fluorescence is emitted by excitation at 780 nm. Addition of an Al(3+) or Pb(2+) ion to a solution of the ligand causes a blue-shifted absorption and enhanced fluorescence due to a declined resonance energy transfer (RET) upon excitation by one- and two-photon processes. Addition of a Pb(2+) ion to a solution of 1.K(+) results in a higher fluorescence intensity than the original 1.Pb(2+) complex regardless of one- or two-photon excitation, due to the allosteric effect induced by the complexation of K(+) with a crown loop.

First hyperpolarizabilities of 1,3,5-tricyanobenzene derivatives: origin of larger beta values for the octupoles than for the dipoles.

A series of donor-acceptor substituted stilbene and diphenylacetylene derivatives and their octupolar analogues have been synthesized and the linear and nonlinear optical properties (beta) studied by both experiments and theoretical calculation. The lambda(max) of the dipoles increases with the conjugation length and is always larger when the C=C bond is used, instead of the C[triple bond]C bond, as the conjugation bridge. Although the lambda(max) values of the octupoles show no clear trend, they are much larger than those of the dipoles. The beta(0) values of the dipoles increase with conjugation length and as the conjugation bridge is changed from the C[triple bond]C to C=C bond. This increase is accompanied by an increase in either lambda(max) or the oscillator strength. Similarly, the beta(0) values of the octupoles increase with the conjugation length and with a change in the donor in the order: NEt2 < N(i-amyl)Ph < NPh2. Moreover, beta(yyy)/beta(zzz) ratios are in the range of 1.6-3.9 and decrease with the conjugation length. Beta values calculated by the finite-field and sum-over-states methods are in good agreement with the experimental data. Also, there is a parallel relationship between the calculated beta values and bond length alternation (BLA). From these results, the origin of the larger beta values for octupoles than for dipoles is assessed.

Two-photon dyes containing heterocyclic rings with enhanced photostability.

A series of donor-pi-donor derivatives containing phenyl, naphthyl, and anthryl groups as the pi-center and heterocyclic rings as the conjugation bridge have been synthesized and their one- and two-photon spectroscopic properties and photostability were determined. These compounds show bathochromic shifts in the absorption and emission spectra, larger two-photon cross-section, and enhanced photostability in comparison to their open-chain analogues. In addition, a convenient method for the qualitative photostability measurement is proposed.

Two-photon absorption properties of 2,6-bis(styryl)anthracene derivatives: effects of donor-acceptor substituents and the pi center.

A series of 2,6- and 2,7-bis(styryl)anthracene derivatives with the donors at the styryl group and acceptors at the 9,10-positions have been synthesized, and their two-photon cross sections (Phidelta(max)) were determined. These compounds exhibit a peak two-photon absorptivity (delta(max)) in the range of 700-2500 GM at 780-1030 nm. Values of lambda(max) and Stokes shifts increase as the acceptor is changed to a stronger one. There is also a parallel increase in lambda(2)max and delta(max) with the same variation of the chromophore structure. Both lambda (2)(max)and Phidelta(max) have been optimized by introducing donor-substituted styryl groups at the 2,6-positions and p-cyanophenyl groups at the 9,10-positions, respectively. The effect of a pi center on the two-photon absorption properties has been assessed by comparing the existing data for a variety of D-pi-D derivatives.

Elimination reactions of N-alkyl-N-chlorothenylamines promoted by MeONa-MeOH and Et(2)NH-MeCN. Effect of the beta-aryl group on the imine-forming transition state.

Elimination reactions of N-alkyl-N-chlorothenylamines 1-4 with MeONa-MeOH and Et(2)NH-MeCN have been studied kinetically. The elimination reactions are regiospecific, producing only the conjugated imines. The reactions are second order and exhibit substantial values of Hammett rho and k(H)/k(D), and an E2 mechanism is evident. The relative rates of elimination for Me/Et/i-Pr/t-Bu substituents are 1/0.5/0.2/0.02 with MeONa-MeOH and 1/0.4/0.2/0.06 with Et(2)NH-MeCN. The transition state structure changes toward more product-like as the base is changed from MeONa-MeOH to Et(2)NH-MeCN. Comparison with existing data reveals that the structure of the transition state is relatively insensitive to the beta-aryl group variation.

Two-photon sensor for metal ions derived from azacrown ether.

A two-photon sensor for the metal ions derived from azacrown ether as the receptor is reported. The sensor emits strong two-photon fluorescence when excited by 800 nm laser photons. Moreover, the binding constants measured by the one- and two-photon fluorescence are similar. This result may be useful for the design of efficient two-photon fluorescence probes for biological substrates.

Triphenylamine derivatives with large two-photon cross-sections.

[structure: see text] Triphenylamine derivatives have been synthesized and shown to exhibit large two-photon cross-sections at a wide range of wavelengths and the largest value measured by fs Z-scan experiment. Moreover, a linear relationship is noted between the two-photon cross-sections measured by ns fluorescence and fs Z-scan methods.

Ketene-forming eliminations from aryl bis(4'-chlorophenyl)acetates promoted by R2NH-R2NH2+ in aqueous MeCN. Change of mechanism.

Elimination reactions of (4'-ClC6H4)2CHCO2C6H3-2-X-4-NO2 promoted by R2NH-R2NH2+ in 70 mol% MeCN (aq.) have been studied kinetically. The reactions are second-order and exhibit Brönsted beta = 0.44-0.86 and /beta(lg)/ = 0.41-0.71. The Brönsted beta decreased with a poorer leaving group and /beta(lg)/ increased with a weaker base. The results are consistent with an E2 mechanism. When X=H, the reaction proceeded by the concurrent E2 and Elcb mechanism.

Nonlinear optical and two-photon absorbtion properties of 1,3,5-tricyano-2,4,6-tris(styryl)benzene-containing octupolar oligomers.

Octupolar oligomers containing 2-12 molecules of 1,3,5-tricyano-2,4,6-tris(styryl)benzene derivatives have been synthesized and their nonlinear optical and two-photon absorption (TPA) properties were determined. The beta(0) values are in the range of (85-1219) x 10(-30) esu and increase monotonically with the increasing number of the octupolar units within the molecule. The two-photon-induced fluorescence excitation spectra are quite similar to the single-photon absorption spectra except that the wavelength is doubled, indicating that the one- and two-photon allowed excited states are the same. The peak TPA cross-section values (delta(max)) measured with nanosecond pulses by the two-photon-induced fluorescence method are in the range (3010-62, 930) x 10(-50) cm(4)s photon(-1). The delta(max) increases as the number of the octupolar units in the molecules increases. A linear relationship is observed between delta(max) and beta, and this delta-beta relationship serves as a useful design strategy for the synthesis of novel octupolar oligomers and polymers with large TPA and beta.

Ketene-forming eliminations from aryl phenylacetates promoted by R2NH/R2NH2+ in aqueous MeCN. Mechanistic borderline between E2 and E1cb.

Elimination reactions of 2-X-4-NO2C6H3CH2C(O)OC6H3-2-Y-4-NO2 [X = H (1), NO2 (2)] promoted by R2NH/R2NH2+ in 70 mol % MeCN(aq) have been studied kinetically. The base-promoted eliminations from 1 proceeded by the E2 mechanism when Y = Cl, CF3, and NO2. The mechanism changed to the competing E2 and E1cb mechanisms by the poorer leaving groups (Y = H, OMe) and to the E1cb extreme by the strongly electron-withdrawing beta-aryl group (2, X = NO2). The values of beta = 0.14 and beta(lg) = 0.10-0.21 calculated for elimination from 1 (Y = NO2) indicate a reactant-like transition state with small extents of proton transfer and C(alpha)-OAr bond cleavage. The extent of proton transfer increased with a poorer leaving group, and the degree of leaving group bond cleavage increased with a weaker base. Also, the changes in the k(1) and k(-1)/k(2) values with the reactant structure variation are consistent with the E1cb mechanism. From these results, a plausible pathway of the change of the mechanism from E2 to the E1cb extreme is proposed.

Effect of structural variation within lipophilic N-(X)sulfonyl carbamoyl lariat ethers on the selectivity and efficiency of competitive alkali metal cation extraction into chloroform.

Sixteen lipophilic N-(X)sulfonyl carbamoyl lariat ethers with polyether ring sizes of 12-crown-4, 14-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6 are utilized for competitive alkali metal cation extractions from aqueous solutions into chloroform. Variation of the electron-withdrawing properties of X in the series of methyl, phenyl, 4-nitrophenyl, and trifluoromethyl allows the influence of the acidity of the C(O)NHSO2X group in the side arm upon extraction efficiency and selectivity to be assessed. With X = trifluoromethyl, effective alkali metal cation extractions from acidic, neutral, and basic aqueous solutions are achieved. When the crown ether rings are 14-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6, selectivities for Li+, Na+, and K+, respectively, are observed. Results are compared with those reported for analogous lariat ether carboxylic acids and phosphonic acid monoethyl esters.

Elimination Reactions of (E)- and (Z)-Benzaldehyde O-Pivaloyloximes. Transition-State Differences for the Syn and Anti Eliminations Forming Nitriles.

Elimination reactions of (E)- and (Z)-benzaldehyde O-pivaloyloximes 1 and 2 with DBU in MeCN have been investigated kinetically. The reactions are second order and exhibit substantial values of Hammett rho and k(H)/k(D) values, and an E2 mechanism is evident. The rate of elimination from 2 is approximately 20 000-fold faster than that from 1. For reactions of 1 with DBU in MeCN, a Hammett rho value of 2.4 +/- 0.1, k(H)/k(D) = 2.7 +/- 0.3, DeltaH() = 12.5 +/- 0.2 kcal/mol, and DeltaS() = -31.0 +/- 0.6 eu have been determined. The corresponding values for 2 are rho = 1.4 +/- 0.1, k(H)/k(D) = 7.8 +/- 0.3, DeltaH() = 8.8 +/- 0.1 kcal/mol, and DeltaS() = -23.6 +/- 0.4 eu, respectively. The results indicate that the nitrile-forming anti eliminations from 2 proceed via a more symmetrical transition state with a smaller degree of proton transfer, less negative charge development at the beta-carbon, and greater extent of triple-bond formation than that for the syn elimination.
