Preparing to care for older adults: engaging college constituents.

Baccalaureate nursing programs must find innovative methods to transform educational culture to value and reward excellence in caring for older adults. Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University used a multidimensional approach to engage college constituents and change the way baccalaureate students are prepared to care for older adults. The college engaged faculty, students, and the community in exchange activities that focused on generating excitement for geriatric nursing within the college and the community. Engaging college constituents enabled large numbers of individuals to work toward creating an educational culture that values and rewards excellence in geriatric nursing.

Research environments that promote integrity.

BACKGROUND: The body of empirical knowledge about research integrity and the factors that promote research integrity in nursing research environments remains small. OBJECTIVE: To propose an internal control model as an innovative framework for the design and structure of nursing research environments that promote integrity. METHODS: An internal control model is adapted to illustrate its use for conceptualizing and designing research environments that promote integrity. RESULTS: The internal control model integrates both the organizational elements necessary to promote research integrity and the processes needed to assess research environments. The model provides five interrelated process components within which any number of research integrity variables and processes may be used and studied: internal control environment, risk assessment, internal control activities, monitoring, and information and communication. DISCUSSION: The components of the proposed research integrity internal control model proposed comprise an integrated conceptualization of the processes that provide reasonable assurance that research integrity will be promoted within the nursing research environment. Schools of nursing can use the model to design, implement, and evaluate systems that promote research integrity. The model process components need further exploration to substantiate the use of the model in nursing research environments.

Strategic use of faculty workgroups to develop online interactive geriatric curricular modules.

Initiating a college-wide, complex multimedia approach to teaching-learning can be fraught with considerable challenges. The strategic use of faculty workgroups to maximize faculty involvement in the development and use of interactive Web-based modules was one successful approach to overcoming such challenges. Use of faculty workgroups composed of grant team faculty members and course faculty during the development process recognized the faculty's curricular and content expertise and tapped individual creativity. Other successful approaches to meeting development challenges were the inclusion of a multimedia designer in faculty workgroups, demonstrations of technology at college council meetings and the use of familiar software by faculty to communicate module design ideas. Additional practical approaches for technology teams within higher education settings are presented from both person and design perspectives.

Continuing education in research ethics for the clinical nurse.

BACKGROUND: In their role as care provider, clinical nurses are involved in research protocols. Although clinical nurses seldom serve as principal investigators, nursing care often is delivered to patients involved in study protocols. This article explores the need for continuing education in research ethics for clinical nurses and offers recommendations for core research ethics education. METHOD: Professional nursing statements, federal policy, and federal recommendations for improving protection of human participants in research were reviewed to identify areas pertinent to the role of nurses. FINDINGS: Continuing education in research ethics is an important component in ensuring protection of human participants in research. Essential research ethics education topics for clinical nurses, including three case studies, are presented. CONCLUSION: Continuing education that enhances clinical nurses' awareness of the ethical issues involved in research assures nurses have the knowledge and ethical sensitivity needed to act as patient advocates and improves the protection of human rights.
