Ergonomics in the health care environment.

This article introduces the history and current applications of workplace ergonomics, basic principles of biomechanics, the types of workplace risks and injuries encountered in the health care environment and risk-reduction strategies. After completing it, the reader should be able to: Describe the biomechanics and physiology of muscle and bone. Explain the different types of muscular work. List major musculoskeletal disorders and their symptoms. Recognize workplace risk factors for musculoskeletal damage and identify prevention strategies. Explain how technological advances in the radiology workplace will reduce the musculoskeletal strain suffered by radiologic technologists.

Biological, chemical and radiological terrorism.

After completing this overview of terrorism, readers should be able to: Describe the early signs and symptoms of a covert terrorist attack. Discuss the radiographic signs of exposure to bioterrorism agents. List likely chemical, biological and radiological agents of terrorism. Categorize biological agents of terror by their Centers for Disease Control (CDC) threat level. Explain the relevance of syndromic surveillance in terrorism preparedness.

Barium swallow.

After completing this article, the reader should be able to: Describe the functional phases and anatomy of swallowing. Detail common underlying causes of dysphagia and their radiographic signs and clinical correlates. List the risk factors for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Differentiate the procedures and goals of barium swallow from those of modified barium swallow. Predict future trends in demand for barium contrast imaging exams related to swallowing dysfunction.

Systemic lupus erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that exhibits a wide range of clinical symptoms, including skin rashes, oral ulcers, arthritis, pulmonary pleuritis, anemia and seizures. Medical imaging plays a role in assessing the extent of disease, neurological involvement, treatment complications and disease progression. This article describes the known risk factors for SLE and SLE diagnosis and treatment.

Aortic emergencies.

This article discusses the anatomy and pathobiology of the aorta, common aortic emergencies and their diagnosis, and the roles and limitations of diagnostic imaging in assessment, medical intervention and monitoring.

Diagnostic imaging of traumatic brain injury.

In this Directed Reading, the history and epidemiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) will be briefly introduced, the physical and physiological nature of TBI reviewed and the role of imaging in the assessment of TBI patients described. New imaging techniques and recent findings about the neurological correlates of TBI symptoms and outcomes from studies using different imaging modalities and techniques will also be discussed. This directed reading will focus on closed-head TBI; penetrating missile brain injuries, such as those caused by bullet wounds, will not be reviewed.
