A descriptive analysis of older adults with HIV/AIDS in California.

Between 10 percent and 15 percent of all AIDS cases throughout the United States have been reported in people ages 50 and over. However, older adults often have been overlooked in research on HIV/AIDS. The study discussed in this article examined 571 individuals ages 30 to 81 who had been diagnosed with symptomatic HIV or AIDS. A cross-sectional analysisfound that those in older age groups were more likely to befemale, to live alone, to have private health insurance, and to have died during the study. The results of the study suggest that social workers need to be aware of and sensitive to the role of sociodemographic factors in the lives of older HIV-infected individuals.

Service use patterns in HIV/AIDS case management: a five-year study.

Over the course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the profile of the client population has changed. Increasingly, individuals infected with HIV identify injection drug use and heterosexual contact as their risk factors. Additionally, women are increasingly affected by the epidemic. This study examines individuals enrolled in an HIV/AIDS case management program over a 5-year period. Although the number of clients served per year remained relatively stable, the number of clients with injection drug use histories and the percentage of women on the caseload have increased consistently. The percentage of clients requiring services and the amount of services used increased in the areas of attendant care, mental health services, and skilled nursing care. Additionally, the annual mean use of services increased in the areas of in-home supportive services and hours of case management. These data suggest that as individuals receiving HIV/AIDS case management services are found to have complicating social and economic factors, their need and use of services will increase.

Service utilization among older people with AIDS: implications for case management.

People over 50 years of age have consistently comprised 10% of all cases diagnosed with AIDS in the United States. Older people with AIDS have been found to differ both in the clinical course of the disease as well as in their need for services. A comparison of 49 patients, 10 of whom were over age 50, revealed that older persons were more functionally impaired at the time of enrollment in a home care program than those under 50 years. Additionally, older individuals were less likely to utilize emotional support services commonly offered by the AIDS network than are their younger counterparts.

Integrating the community into geriatric case management: public health interventions.

Gatekeepers, or nontraditional referral sources, have proven to be an effective means of case finding and outreach for the mental health needs of isolated senior citizens. A two-year project administered by the Public Health Division of the Health Services Department in a San Francisco Bay Area county found the gatekeeper concept to be an effective means of case finding in the public health setting. Program statistics showed similar profiles of individuals referred by gatekeepers and other referral sources except that gatekeepers referred more individuals living alone.

SRx: a regional approach to geriatric medication education.

Medication use is becoming increasingly recognized as an important factor in the total health care needs of older persons. Combining clinical and educational interventions that reinforce one another can prove an effective means of educating the consumer and provider about geriatric medication misuse and strategies for its prevention. This paper discusses one such program, the SRx Regional Program of the San Francisco Bay area.
