A record sheet for pressure sore risk assessment.

Pressure sore risk assessment should be used to inform practice. Differences exist in methods of using risk assessment scales. Nurses need a way of recording risk factors quickly and easily in a format which indicates what action should be taken.

Use of the ileal conduit as a model for studying human small intestinal mucus glycoprotein secretion.

To establish a human model system for investigating control of mucus secretion by the small intestine, we have studied the output of mucus glycoprotein in the urine of patients with ileal conduits. A highly specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure mucus glycoprotein with a sensitivity down to 0.3 ng protein of mucus glycoprotein. The assay detects human ileal mucus glycoprotein in the urine of ileal conduit patients; for an individual subject, the amount hardly varied from day to day, although there were substantial differences between individuals in the amounts secreted. Control urine from persons with normal bladders did not contain any mucus glycoprotein that reacted in the ELISA. The model has many advantages over other experimental systems for studying the rate of mucus glycoprotein secretion from the human ileum and can also be used as a reproducible resource of undegraded mucus glycoprotein.

Seeing versus imagining movement in depth.

Subjects judged the quality of rigid motion between pairs of three-dimensional drawings that differed by a rotation in depth. The figures were aligned with, and rotated around, either the vertical axis or an axis that was oblique with respect to the XYZ co-ordinate system. Rated quality of motion decreased with increasing angular disparity between the figures and with decreasing stimulus duration, regardless of whether the figures were vertical or oblique. The same subjects then participated in a mental rotation task using the same stimuli and angular disparities. An effect of principal axis emerged, such that subjects took longer to make decisions about obliquely aligned stimuli than about vertically aligned stimuli, especially if they received the oblique stimuli first. These data imply that perceived versus imagined movement through the same trajectory involves different processes. Whereas the apparent motion system performs its computations relatively automatically, the processes involved in mental rotation are more strategic in nature.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for ileal human goblet cell mucin.

A sandwich ELISA for measuring ileal human goblet cell mucin has been developed with a linear response range 0.2 to 1.5 ng mucin protein. It can be used to quantitate the mucin present in dilute and unpurified samples without interference from other glycoproteins and proteins. Reduction of the mucin decreased the reactivity by only 14% indicating that the assay reacts almost as well with mucin glycopeptides as with native mucin. The assay has the advantages over previously described immunoassays for mucin of giving a result in 6 h, detecting slightly lower concentrations of mucin, and is more sensitive, quantitative and specific than the traditional protein or periodic acid-Schiff assays used for glycoproteins.

Effect of structure on the excretion of steroidal acids in human urine and their potential colorimetric assay as 17-oxogenic steroids.

Following the oral administration of tritiated coricosterone, cortisol, deoxycorticosterone and progesterone to human subjects, 14.9%, 12.8%, 3.4% and 2.1% of the dose was recovered in the acidic metabolite fraction of 48 h urines after conventional hydrolysis and solvent partition. Neutral and acidic 17-oxogenic steroids (17-OGS) excreted in 24 h urines were also measured with the Zimmermann color reaction. The acidic 17-IGS accounted for 14.1%, 16.4% and 12.1% of the fractionated 17-OGS in the urines of normal and pregnant females and normal males respectively. From structural considerations, it was concluded that only 17-hydroxylated steroidal acids, with a 20-hydroxy-21-oic acid side chain and derived predominantly from cortisol, would be estimated as 17-OGS after oxidation with sodium periodate. 17-Dexy steroidal acids resemble the neutral 17-deoxycorticosteroids in undergoing side chain oxication to 17-aldehydes which do not form Zimmermann chromogens. The excretion of both neutral and acidic 17-OGS was suppressible with dexamethasone administration.
