Fine structure and quantitative study in the otic ganglia of the rat.

Observations were concentrated on the ultrastructure of perikarya and satellite cells of the otic ganglion of the adult rat. Characteristics of both cell types were morphologically analysed as well as their relationship. Quantitative data concerning the volumetric density were calculated for the following elements of the ganglion: glial cells together (28.5%), unmyelinated fibres (13.4%), myelinated fibres (2.7%), connective tissue (13.6%). This electron microscopic study is a sequence of our previous light microscopic study which determined neuronal densities (COSTA, MANDARIM-DE-LACERDA and BAUER, in press).

[Arterial vascularization of the sino-atrial and atrio-ventricular nodes and frequency of coronary artery branches in Papio Erxleben, 1777].

The arterial blood supply to the sino-atrial (S-A) and atrio-ventricular (A-V) nodes was studied in 63 baboon hearts (Papio cynocephalus and Papio hamadryas). The arterial coronary injection was made with latex neoprene (23 hearts), a latex and lead oxide mixture (30 hearts) and polyester resin (10 hearts) for dissection, radiographic and corrosion cast studies, respectively. The S-A artery is a long recurrent left coronary branch (92.1%) or an ascendant less long right coronary branch (7.9%). The A-V arteries were 2 or 3 small branches of the interventricular posterior artery originating from the right or the left with the same frequency as in man. The percent distribution of the other coronary branches was similar to that observed in man.

[Double mitral orifice. An anatomical case].

A double mitral orifice was discovered at autopsy in a 74 year old woman. Death resulted after several episodes of cardiac failure complicating mixed mitral and aortic valve disease. A vertical limbus bridged the mitral annulus separating it into two distinct right and left orifices, with oblique long axes aligned towards the lower part of the limbus perpendicular to each other from the left atrial view. After opening the left ventricle, both orifices were observed to have their own sets of chordae tendinae attached to normal papillary muscles: the right orifice to the posterior and the left to the anterior papillary muscle. The inferior end of the limbus was attached to a supplementary papillary muscle. Echocardiography and CT scanning were performed before dissection. This malformation results from symphysis of the mid parts of the two mitral leaflets during embryonic stages 15 and 16 (8-10 mm vertex-coccyx, 31st-33rd days).

[Development of the human prostate during the first stages of fetal life. Morphometric study].

The initial prostatic development was investigated here with morphometric methods. Five male human fetuses, ranging in crown-rump length from 50 to 92 mm (foetal age 9 to 12.5 weeks) were studied. The morphometric analysis underline the importance of the prostatic mesenchyme and the later growth of the epithelial buds. Some reconstructions showed a crescent-shaped disposition of the supra-deferentials buds, according to the actual hypothesis about a "preprostatic" zone.
