Mental health care reform: a historic town meeting of psychiatric nurses.

1. Inspired by the 1992 presidential candidates' town meetings, the conveners of the American Psychiatric Nurses' Association Invitational Conference decided to stage a town meeting for psychiatric nurses. Forty psychiatric nursing leaders came together to share their professional expertise and experiences by giving "testimony" about the role psychiatric nurses play in mental health care reform. 2. The town meeting participants discussed many timely topics, such as practice, education, titling and credentialing issues, and the future of the psychiatric/mental health nursing profession. 3. The participants left the town meeting energized with a common sense of purpose--and a promise to commit themselves to creating the strategies necessary for reform of the mental health care system.

Social phobic symptoms in patients with panic disorder: practical and theoretical implications.

Of 35 patients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of panic disorder, 16 also received diagnoses of social phobia, and 15 of these 16 reported past episodes of major depression. Only nine of the 19 panic patients without social phobia had histories of depression. The panic patients with histories of depression had significantly higher self-ratings of social anxiety and avoidance, but not agoraphobic fear and avoidance, than those without histories of depression. Panic disorder and social phobia may coexist in many cases, and the presence of social phobia may be associated with a higher morbid risk for major depression in this population.

Research practicum. Linking education to practice.

Integration of nursing theory, research, and practice is a long-standing goal. The authors describe the development and implementation of an innovative sequence of research courses at one graduate school of nursing. The research sequence engages graduate nursing students in the "real life" aspects of conducting research in a practice discipline. The experience allows students to develop and use research skills as they actively experience both the excitement and frustration inherent in the research process.

Self-efficacy: strategy for enhancing diabetes self-care.

This study found that the concept of self-efficacy was associated with diabetes self-care behaviors for individuals with complex insulin requirements. Individuals with higher levels of self-efficacy were better able to manage their diabetes self-care. Diabetes educators are encouraged to incorporate the self-efficacy concept into teaching programs to help individuals develop their own strategies for long-term management of their diabetes. The diabetes scales that made both concepts, self-efficacy and self-care, operational have content validity and measurement reliability and may be used in practice settings to obtain pretreatment information and to evaluate outcomes.
