The anterior spinal artery collateral in coarctation of the aorta. A clinical angiographic correlation.

A 10-year-old boy had acute flaccid paraparesis with sensory deficits. Attention was drawn to his hitherto asymptomatic coarctation of the aorta. Aniography defined the extent of the dilated anterior spinal artery, and reversal of the flow pattern. The residual deficits consisted of minimal impairment of long motor and lateral sensory tract functions in a unilateral fashion, suggesting a steal syndrome with transient ischemia to the spinal cord. Recovery preceded surgical correction of the coarctation.

Congenital cervical spinal atrophy.

Three children presented at birth with axial hypotonia and symmetrical flaccid paresis limited to the upper extremities, and involving proximal and distal muscle groups. At birth, palmar flexion creases were poorly developed, and the hand muscles were atrophic. These clinical features, the muscle biopsy findings, and the nonprogressive course, suggest a vascular insult to the cervical spinal cord during gestation. The term, congenital cervical spinal atrophy seems most descriptive of these features.

Epithelial proliferation and expression of the aromatic amine activation enzyme N-acetyltransferase in the prostate of postnatal rat.

Male ACI/seg rats of different postnatal ages were injected, i.p., with 150 mg/kg bromodeoxyuridine one hour before being sacrificed. The incorporation of this compound into the DNA of prostate epithelium was detected immunohistochemically. The labeling indices in prostate epithelium were 16.8, 26.5 and 13.7%, in 3, 11 and 17 days old rats, respectively. It decreased gradually thereafter to 1.8% in 60 days old rats. The mRNA of N-acetyltransferase 1 was detected by a non-isotopic in situ hybridization method using a mixture of specific digoxigenin-11-dUTP-labeled oligodeoxynucleotide probes. The mRNA of N-acetyltransferase 1 was detected during the entire postnatal period. It was not detected in the stromal or endothelial cells. The coincidence of N-acetyltransferase expression in actively proliferating prostate epithelial cells during the postnatal period suggest that the prostate tissue may be particularly sensitive during this period to the carcinogenesis by aromatic and heterocyclic amines.

Comparative pathology of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

Basic studies on the pathogenesis of prostate disease including hypertrophy and cancer have been difficult due to the lack of suitable animal models. Much effort has been directed to the development of appropriate animal models, and yet many obstacles still remain. Rodents do not develop spontaneous hypertrophy of the prostate, in fact the prostate atrophies with advancing age. Guinea pigs appear to be a good model to study the effect of hormones on the prostate gland. Microinvasive prostatic adenocarcinoma occurs spontaneously in various species of rodents, and can be induced by radiation, hormones and chemical carcinogens. The man and dog appear to be the only mammals which suffer naturally from the pathological processes of the prostate gland associated with aging. We review the currently available models for the study of benign, and malignant prostate disease and assess the strengths and weaknesses each for preclinical investigations.
