[Synchronous and metachronous bilateral hypernephroid renal carcinomas].

In 1.4-3.9% Grawitz tumours occur bilaterally, either synchronously or metachronously. Three patients with a bilateral Grawitz tumour are described, two with a synchronous and one with a metachronous one. Epidemiology, pathology, clinical symptoms, radiodiagnostics, therapy and prognosis of the bilateral Grawitz tumours are discussed.

Adenocarcinoma↗

[Roentgenology of cancer of the gastric stump].

The carcinoma of the stomach stump is a late complication after partial resection of the stomach and gastroenterostomy. The risk for carcinoma increases with the interval, but in older people the interval is shorter. 12 patients with carcinoma of the stomach stump are discussed. The average interval from the primary operation of the stomach until the carcinoma was 23.8 years. With x-ray examination the diagnosis was correct in 11 patients, in 1 patient the examination was interpreted falsely.

[Simultaneous bilateral Wilms' tumors].

Wilms' tumors occur in 4-14% bilaterally, partially simultaneously, partially metachronously. Therefore in every case with Wilms' tumor the contralateral kidney has to be examined thoroughly too. 5 children of a series of 52 patients with Wilms' tumor showed simultaneous bilateral occurrence (9,6%). The radiological procedures and their importance in diagnosis of bilateral Wilms' tumor are discussed. The prognosis of simultaneous bilateral Wilms' tumors is much better than that of metachronous ones and almost the same as that of unilateral ones.

Revascularized periosteum transplantations.

A controlled experiment was performed in 56 African pygmy goats, analyzing the bone-forming capacity of two different revascularized periosteum grafts in midshaft tibial defects. At radiological examination revascularized tibial periosteum grafts firmly bridged the defect within 8 weeks, revascularized costal periosteum grafts did not.

Parasitic blood supply of malignant renal tumors.

Eleven malignant renal tumors, which showed parasitic blood supply on arteriography, were compared with operative and histopathologic findings. Mesenteric vascularization of renal tumors indicates perirenal infiltration more than retroperitoneal blood supply.

Dissolution of bilateral renal calculi via percutaneous nephrostomy. Report of a case.

Both kidneys in a patient with multiple, bilateral renal calculi were treated consecutively by irrigation with a stone-dissolving solution through percutaneously placed nephrostomy catheters. Almost complete dissolution of the calculi was obtained. An intercurrent ureteral calculus necessitated introduction of a second catheter in one kidney, but was also successfully treated.

[The radiological diagnosis of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (author's transl)].

The article discusses the y-ray diagnosis of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, including 13 with multiple endocrine adenomatosis, Type I. This syndrome is governed by complex pathophysiological processes determining the x-ray symptoms. Besides the predisposition to ulcers, which will persist despite partial gastrectomy, changes at the duodenum (hypertrophy of Brunner's glands) and proximal jejunum (bulging of folds) are relatively typical. However, the final diagnosis of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a clinical one. The syndrome is caused by non-beta islet cell tumors of the pancreas, associated with hypergastrinemia. Since these tumors are often multiple and small, angiography is not very rewarding. It is frequently impossible to distinguish the benign from the malignant tumors on the grounds of histological findings, the only criterion being their biological behaviour, if the exclusion or identification of metastases.

Successful management of postoperative hemorrhage of the kidney by selective transcatheter embolization.

A case is reported where postoperative hemorrhage from the kidney was successfully managed by selective transcatheter embolization of the bleeding vessel. A review of the literature reveals that only three papers have been published dealing with selective embolization for controlling hemorrhage from the kidney. Our case is another illustration of the possibilities and usefulness of this method of treatment in the management of persistent postoperative hemorrhage.

Mammographic detection and staging of invasive lobular carcinoma.

The aim of the study was to evaluate mammography in detecting and staging of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) in order to assess the performance and impact of observer variability. Forty-two cases of ILC were retrospectively evaluated twice by two breast radiologists. Mammographic performance as well as intra- and interobserver variations was evaluated. Thirty-five percent to 37% of the cases were understaged. The largest differences between radiologists were found in the breast imaging reporting and data system (BIRADS) classification and staging performance. These results can have serious influence on patient management.

The spleen in non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Diagnostic value of computed tomography.

Computed tomography of the spleen was correlated with histologic examination or clinical data in 53 selected patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Calculation of the splenic index with CT by multiplying spleen length, width and thickness is a simple and rapid procedure for defining splenic size in vivo. A good correlation was found between size of the spleen, as estimated by splenic index calculation, and the proven or probable histologic state of the spleen.
