Polycythemia vera and primary hyperparathyroidism.

A patient with the clinical manifestations of polycythemia and hypercalcemia underwent an extensive examination for occult neoplasm. No malignancy was found; however, a parathyroid adenoma was excised. After its removal, the hypercalcemia and polycythemia disappeared during a two-year follow-up period.

[Hyperthyroidism from placental choriocarcinoma: a case report and review of the literature (author's transl)].

The first case of placental choriocarcinoma producing clinical hyperthyroidism reported in France is described. Recovery occurred, with disappearance of the choriocarcinoma metastases and hyperthyroidism signs, after chemotherapy alone (vincristine and methotrexate). A review of the seven cases reported in the published literature showed that the hyperthyroidism could be related to the thyroid-stimulating activity of the tumoral gonadotropin (HCG).

Hepatitis B surface antigen (Australia antigen) in mosquitoes collected in Senegal, West Africa.

During July and August of 1973, 9,198 mosquitoes were collected in the Republic of Senegal. Eight species of mosquitoes were found in the collections: Culex thalassius, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, Culex trigripes, Culex phillipi, Aedes irritans, Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae, and Mansonia sp. Specimens were sorted by biological condition; those obviously engorged were designated as (E), females with swollen abdomens not conspicuously blooded were considered gravid (G), and those with normal or shrunken abdomens were considered neither blooded nor gravid (U). Representative samples of each species were tested by solid phase radioimmunoassay for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBSAg, Australia antigen). A total of 12 mosquitoes were found to be HBSAg positive out of 1,658 individuals tested. These were: 9 Culex thalassius, 1 (E), 5 (G), 3 (U); 2 Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, 1 (E), 1 (U); and Aedes irritans, 1 (U).

[Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency and liver diseases].

Alpha-1 antitrypsin is mainly responsible for the inhibitory power with regard to serum of numerous enzymes, in particular, trypsin. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is linked to pulmonary and hepatic disease. The special characteristic constantly found during liver disease, associated with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, is the existence of intra-cytoplasmic globules within the hepatocytes due to accumulation of alpha-1 antitrypsin. This latter enzyme differs chemically from serum alpha-1 antitrypsin.

[Acute trichinosis. Several recent cases imported from Egypt (author's transl)].

Five cases of acute trichinosis imported from Egypt (four of them have been anatomically and serologically proved) have been recently observed at the Ambroise-Paré Hospital. The patients had been contaminated at Cairo. All of them but one presented atypical clinical picture. One of them was complicated with myocarditis, making the pronostic more severe. In 3 cases out of 5 immunological tests and blood eosinophilia were right one case remaining doubtful these reactions being negative. An anthelminthic, thiabenzadole, associated with corticotherapy, seems to have been efficient.
