Time correction and two channel recording in 24 hour electrocardiographic analysis.

An improved technique for automatic monitoring and analysis of ECG recording is described. The system is based on standard commercial equipment but provides improved quantitative measurement of cardiac arrhythmias. This is done by using a simultaneous recording of a 100 Hz clock, which is used to correct for tape speed variations. Also increased immunity to artefacts is achieved by combining two ECG leads, coupled with signal analysis techniques. The problems arising from certain types of artefact are also discussed.

Electrocardiography

The measurement of uterine activity in induced labour.

A simple electronic system for quantifying uterine activity in labour has been developed. The basic construction of the system is described. It has been used to confirm the hypothesis of Steer et al (1975) that oxytocin-induced labour has a stable phase during which uterine activity is largely independent of oxytocin infusion rate.

Adolescent

A method for monitoring uterine activity in induced labour.

A system for the quantitative assessment of uterine activity during an oxytocin-induced labour has been developed. This has been achieved using relatively simple analogue techniques and can easily be used in the labour ward alongside existing monitoring equipment. Initial results indicate that a plateau of uterine activity can be easily recognised from the display and maintained at oxytocin dosage levels below those that might normally be used.

Female

Simple method for automating the differential leucocyte-count.

A simple method is described for analysing leucocyte-volume distribution curves to obtain a differential leucocyte-count. The results derived by this method agree well with the differential counts obtained by microscopical examination of the stained blood-film.

Automation

A semi-automatic instrument for estimating the differential leucocyte count.

A specially developed analogue processing unit was used with a Coulter cell counter and a pulse height analyser to determine the differential leucocyte count. The method is based upon a simplified analysis of the white cell volume distribution curve and the results agree well with those obtained by conventional methods.
