Post-traumatic stress disorder: recognition and management.

Nurses may encounter patients with post-traumatic stress disorder at any time in their work. Knowledge of the disorder will assist nurses to care more fully for these patients. It may be argued that PTSD is on the increase in society.

Open learning in palliative care.

Open learning is increasing in importance in nurse education. In this article the author considers open learning and discusses its use in palliative care education. Advantages and disadvantages of this learning method are considered and guidelines are offered to the teacher to assist them to evaluate existing learning packages or to produce their own open learning materials.

Nurse teachers' attitudes to research: a phenomenological study.

This research project looks at nurse teachers' attitudes to research. It addresses the question of how nurse teachers view their responsibilities and abilities to promote nursing research. The requirement for nursing practice to be founded upon a firm basis of research is increasing. It may be argued that nurse teachers are highly influential and may provide the linchpin to the future of nursing research in the clinical environment. This research, using a phenomenological approach, attempts to reveal what nurse teachers think and feel about their role in research.

Quality assurance in nurse education.

Nurse education in common with all areas of health is undergoing rapid and wide-ranging change. The selection and implementation of quality assurance strategies is now very much a current issue in colleges of nursing up and down the United Kingdom. In this article the author examines one model of quality assurance and looks at possible strategies for success.

Applying a model of quality assurance in intensive care.

At the moment many changes and new trends are being introduced in British health care. Perhaps amongst the most important of these changes are those aimed at introducing quality strategies into health care. In this paper the subject of quality assurance within intensive care unit settings is discussed, with an example of how one quality model might be implemented, Maxwell's model of quality (1984).

The living will: implications for nurses.

In certain states in the USA there has been, for some time, the right in law for patients who are terminally ill to declare their 'living will'. This article examines the concept of the living will and the situation surrounding euthanasia in Britain and Europe. Its aim is to give nurses further insight into and greater understanding of the possible future use of a living will.

Role of the nurse teacher as researcher.

Nurse teachers have an important role to play in nursing research. This article examines this role and considers some of the factors that prevent nurse teachers from increasing their research activity. It also highlights methods by which nurse teachers and nursing practitioners can work together to reduce the theory/practice gap and improve patient care.

Socialization of student nurses into the qualified nurse role.

The journey that a new student nurse makes is a long one during which the traveller undergoes many changes. This article considers the way the student is socialized into the role of qualified nurse. In so doing it explores the part played by the nurse teacher in that process of change.
