A case of suicide by ingestion of sodium nitroprusside.

The study reports a case of suicide by ingestion of sodium nitroprusside which resulted in acute cyanide poisoning. Analyses carried out on body fluid yielded the quantitation of total (5.00 mg/L) and free (3.30 mg/L) cyanide in blood and of methemoglobin (blood = 10.5%). At the scene, some solid reddish-brown material was found in a glass, which on toxicological analysis was found to contain sodium nitroprusside; about 9 g of the same substance was identified in stomach contents. The detection and quantification of cyanide and methemoglobin in biological samples from the case indicated that the lethal effect was due to both metabolic products (cyanide and methemoglobin).

[Clinical and immunologic test of the activity of a polymicrobial vaccine in patients with chronic bronchitis during a flare-up].

The authors evaluated the effect of an orally administered polymicrobial vaccine in a group of chronic bronchitis patients in order to assess its efficacy in preventing recurrent infections and as adjuvants during minor acute episodes. Compared to the control group, vaccinated patients had 1) a reduced number of flare-ups, and these were less severe and symptoms were improved; II) lymphocyte phenotype was not altered in any of the patients but nevertheless the response to skin tests for delayed sensitivity was improved in the vaccinated patients only; III) more rapid symptomatic improvement of flare-ups. The authors stress the improvement of cell-mediated lymphocyte function as a result of vaccination, probably due to macrophage activation and with resulting improvement of the clinical course of the bronchial disorder.

[Experimental microsurgery operations on the rabbit fallopian tube].

The authors show their experience in tubal microsutures in rabbits belonging to the New Zealand type. Three groups of seven rabbits each have been examined and for each group a different type of microsurgical operation has been carried out. Post operational checks where effected immediately afterwards and sometimes after the operation.
