Antitetanus immunity in newborn findings in a sample of population in the Siena area (Italy).

Immunity against tetanus in newborn and in mother-newborn couples was studied in a sample of population from the Siena area, Italy. Mother-newborn antitetanus antibody transfer and the decrease of passively acquired antitoxin, in newborn after birth, were evaluated too. Antitetanus immunity was detected by a passive haemagglutination assay. A high rate of immunologically unprotected newborns was found owing to the low immunisation rate in mothers. The important role played by general prophylactic measures in neonatal tetanus prevention is remarked and a systematic antitetanus immunity screening, during pregnancy, is suggested in order to enhance antitetanus protection in newborns and mothers by immunisation practices.

Epidemiologic Methods↗

Enzyme activities and ultrastructure of intestinal epithelium in the mouse treated with chloramphenicol.

Several enzyme activities in the enteric mucous membrane (maltase, lactase, leucineaminopeptidase) were assayed and intestinal epithelium ultrastructure was evaluated in mice treated with chloramphenicol, per os, in different doses (50 mg/Kg and 100 mg/Kg), for 10 days. Of the enzyme activities assayed, only leucineaminopeptidase was found to be significantly lower in treated animals than in controls. Enterocyte ultrastructure and mitochondrial morphometrical parameters were not found to be significantly modified in treated animals.

Rubella in teenagers: epidemiology and prophylaxis in Siena, Italy.

Six hundred and fifty-three teenagers (aged 11-13 year) living in Siena and its surroundings (Tuscany, Italy) were the sample for serological screening intended to ascertain immunity to rubella. It was found that 324 of the teenagers (49.62%) lacked antibodies and, hence, were unprotected against the infection. Out of the 324 girls, 196 (around 3/5) were vaccinated using live vaccine. Post-vaccinal complications, with clinical signs of rubella infection, were recorded in almost one third of the vaccinees. Virus isolation from the blood was, in every case, not possible after either 10 or 30 days from vaccination. The serological findings, expressed in hemagglutination inhibition antibodies, could be summarized in the following way: (i) antibodies at low titre were found in only eight out of 184 girls (4.35%) ten days after vaccination; (ii) serological conversion was recorded in 187 out of 188 girls (99.47%) 30 days after vaccination; (iii) the titres were moderately high but much lower than those recorded for the natural infection. The results are discussed in the context of their implications for the strategies of rubella vaccination as far as the safety and the effectiveness of the vaccine are concerned, with emphasis on the duration of the protective immunity.

[Enzyme activity and ultrastructure of the intestinal epithelium in mice treated with rifampicin].

Some enzymatic activities and the ultrastructure of the intestinal epithelium of mouse were valued after a treatment with rifampicin, per os, in different doses (25 mg/Kg and 50 mg/Kg), for 90 days. Neither alteration of maltase, lactase, leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), nor modification of the morphology of jejunal mucous membrane enterocytes and of their mitochondria were noticed in treated animals, as to controls.

[DNA and proteins in the regenerating liver of rats treated with tetanus toxin].

The AA. have studied the effects of tetanus toxin on regenerating rat liver, using as parameters regenerating rate, DNA and protein contents. In animals which have been treated with tetanus toxin a decrease of liver regeneration and an increase of DNA and protein contents have been observed. Basing on results, the AA. suppose that tetanus toxin influence cellular cycle, stopping cells in G2 stage.

[Effect of tetanus toxin on rat liver].

The effects of tetanus toxin on the rat liver, employing as parameters the DNA and protein contents, have been studied. In the animals treated with tetanus toxin the DNA and the total liver proteins appear to be increased in a statistically significant way to comparison with the controls.

[Effects of diphtheria and tetanus toxins on liver regeneration in the rat].

The effects of diphtheria toxin and tetanus toxin on the regenerating rat liver were studied. The following parameters were used: liver regeneration percentage, mitotic index, protein content and serum complement C3 fraction level. Diphtheria toxin does not affect the liver regeneration, that what confirms the poor sensitivity of the rat to this toxin. Tetanus toxin inhibits the cellular division, while causes an increase in the cell protein content, resulting in hepatocyte hypertrophy. Both toxins cause a fall of the serum complement C3 fraction.

[The effects of staphylococcal alpha toxin on regenerating liver (author's transl)].

The effects of staphylococcal alpha toxin on regenerating liver of partially hepatectomized rats are studied. Sixty six rats are used. They are divided into three groups of twenty two animals each one. The first group included untreated animals, the rats of second and third group are injected with 0,1 UE of staphylococcal alpha toxin, respectively soon after hepatectomy (second group) and after twenty two hours (third group). As parameters we used: mitotic activity, percentage of hepatic regeneration, the contents of liver water and proteins. The results are: a low letality in all the animals, a lower mitotic activity in all treated animals than in the intact ones, the percentage of restoration, the contents of water and proteins are the same in all the animals of the three groups. The AA. conclude that staphylococcal alpha toxin has a little negative mitotic effect on partially hepatectomized rats liver.

Effects of E. coli O 127 endotoxin on regenerating rat liver.

The Authors investigated the effect produced by endotoxin upon regenerating rat liver. The animals were divided into three groups after hepatectomy. The first group of animals received physiological solution, the second group received 0.5 mg of E. coli endotoxin soon after hepatectomy and the last group received the same quantity of endotoxin 22 hours after hepatectomy. To estimate hepatic regeneration we used: percentage of liver regeneration and mitotic activity. It was noted that the percentage of hepatic regeneration and mitotic activity were higher in the two groups of treated animals than in the control group. Mitotic activity and hepatic regeneration were higher in the animals treated 22 hours after hepatectomy than in the animls of second group. These results lead us to conclude that E. coli O 127 endotoxin is mitogenic also in vivo.
