[Developmental anomaly of the hyoid bone: an unusual cause of dysphagia].

We report the case of a hyoid syndrome caused by a developmental anomaly of the second branchial cleft, presenting at adult age by dysphagia without any abnormality detected at the barium swallow and at naso-pharyngeal endoscopy, first examinations to perform in case of dysphagia. The MRI findings of this anomaly showed a hyperintense well-limited vallecular mass syndrome. The diagnosis of hyoid bone anomaly was established at spiral CT with 3D reconstructions showing an incurvated and elongated lesser cornua causing persistant impingement on the lateral wall of the oropharynx. CT scan performed during Valsalva manoeuver showed the persistance of the compression during pharyngeal insufflation.

[Unusual localization of a recurrent benign parotid tumor in the infratemporal fossa].

Recurrences of parotid tumours are frequent (10 to 20% of cases) and require regular follow-up of these patients, especially when primary surgery was only partial and the initial tumour was multinodular. Malignant degeneration is reported in 1% of these tumours. The site of a parotid tumour in the infratemporal fossa is exceptional and usually indicates a malignant tumour metastasising along the internal maxillary artery and auriculotemporal nerve, as the inter-pterygoid aponeurosis is very resistant. However, this is no longer true following primary surgery in which damage to this aponeurosis is responsible for dissemination or localisation of the recurrence in the infratemporal fossa. The infiltrated appearance of the skin, muscles or fat is not suggestive of a malignant tumour and this dissemination can be explained by the multinodular and invasive potential of this tumour.

[Provoked oto-emissions. Parameters obtained in normal subjects using Kemp's equipment].

Response parameters relating to the stimulus (click or filtrated bursts), the patient's age and audition curve (physiological presbyacusis) were derived from 3158 provoked otoemission (POE) recordings obtained in normal subjects. Current limits imposed by the device used constitute a factor restricting indications for such devices to the screening of loss hearing in the young child, obviously, but also to the investigation of certain paucisymptomatic hearing disorders presenting with normal or subnormal pure tome audiograms.

[Did Napoleon suffer from sleep apnea syndrome?].

Napoleon would sleep very little. He frequently woke up during night and worked. Brief sleeping time in day repaired his fatigue. He had also a short and thick neck. In the last fourth of his life he progressively suffered from obesity, daily involuntary sleepiness and his intellectual capabilities undoubtedly decreased. Our experience of 48 cases of sleep apnea syndrome diagnosed by mean of polysomnography allow no to think that Napoleon suffered from this disease. Historical consequences of this pathology is discussed.
