Degeneration and regeneration of some mechanoreceptors. An ultrastructural study. II. Ultrastructure of denervated Grandry corpuscles.

The ultrastructure of denervated Grandry corpuscles reveals the retrograde character of degenerative changes in the receptor nerve fibre. The denervation affects also the specific cell elements: the Schwann receptor cells and specialized cells. The both cell types pass through the phase of activation followed by degeneration and elimination. The process is significantly prolonged by the specialized cells. The Schwann receptor cells appear more dynamic and sensitive elements in the process of degeneration. After the full elimination of the specialized cells the denervated receptors cannot be established.

Cytochemical localization of acid phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase in some avian mechanoreceptors.

Ultrastructural distribution of acid phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase was studied in the receptor elements of HERBST and GRANDRY sensory corpuscles. Acid phosphatase activity was established in the elements of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum of perineural capsule cells, as well as in the secondary lysosomes of all cell types. Particular interest was paid on the activity of myelin-like dense bodies and some clear core vesicles belonging to the axoplasm of receptor nerve fibres. Adenosine triphosphatase activity was established on the membranes of receptor structures and pinocytotic vesicles. More deposits of electron dense material were localized on the axolemma of the non-myelinated portions of the receptor nerve fibres. The functional significance and importance of the both enzymes in the receptor structures was discussed.

Neurochemical features of feline superior mesenteric ganglion.

The distribution of various neuronal peptides: substances P (SP), somatostatin (SOM), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was studied by means of immunofluorescence in the superior mesenteric ganglion of the cat. Several populations of neurons can be characterized by their contents of neurotransmitters. All of the neuropeptides were seen in the ganglion cells in different proportions but the majority of the cells were NPY-immunopositive and immunoreactivity for CGRP, SOM and SP was restricted to rather small subpopulations. Only a few ganglionic cells were VIP-immunoreactive. The neuronal fibres expressed different peptide immunoreactivity as well; the most widespread ones were VIP-containing fibres. The neuronal filaments immunoreactive to the rest of neuropeptides were seen more rarely, usually surrounding immunonegative cell bodies and blood vessels.
