High prevalence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness and asthma in ice hockey players.

The prevalence of asthma was studied in a ice hockey team compared with both a floor ball team and the Swiss population. Lung function, bronchial hyperresponsiveness to methacholine, asthma symptoms and exercise-induced asthma were measured in a cross-sectional prospective study. A positive response to the methacholine bronchial provocation test was found in 34.6% of the ice hockey players and 20.8% of the floor ball players (Swiss population 16.4%). The provocative dose causing a 20% fall in the forced expiratory volume in one second (PD20) was significantly lower in ice hockey players than in floor ball players, but there was no significant difference in the dose-response slopes between the two groups. Asthma was diagnosed in 19.2% of the ice hockey players and in 4.2% of the floor ball players (Swiss population 6.8%), whereas exercise-induced asthma was found in 11.5% of the ice hockey players and in 4.2% of the floor ball players. In conclusion, asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness seemed to be more common in ice hockey players than in floor ball players and in the Swiss population. Strenuous exercise at lower temperatures may be a risk factor for the higher prevalence of asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, as well as the increased severity of bronchial hyperresponsiveness, particularly in ice hockey players.

[Conconi test on the bicycle ergometer].

Several recent papers on the Conconi procedure tested on an ergometric bicycle have shown that the deflection of the heart rate is rarely seen if the procedure follows the usual protocol where the work duration remains the same at each work level. According to the di Prampero formula, work can be expressed as the energy cost of running (C), multiplied with covered distance. Therefore it is important, as in the current 400 m-track Conconi test, to keep work and not time constant at each work level. Consequently we examined heart rate and lactate profile in four groups of athletes, in following an experimental design respecting this condition. In all ergometric test runs, we observed the sought after heart rate deflection with the following lactate values: Physical education students (female) heart rate 169 with 4.6 mmol/l lactate Physical education students (male) heart rate 169 with 5.03 mmol/l lactate Amateur cyclists heart rate 178 with 2.44 mmol/l lactate Professional cyclists heart rate 171 with 1.98 mmol/l lactate.

[Test for the determination of endurance fitness and training style in young ice hockey players].

A test similar to the Conconi test was developed by the authors, to be used specifically with ice hockey players. The aim was to measure the aerobic performance capacity of these athletes. The results give us on one hand informations on the actual performance potential of these sportsmen. On the other hand, they enable us to design an optimal training schedule. With such data in hand, it becomes possible to determine which intensity of endurance training is optimally adapted to an individual's progress of performance. It is thus easier to develop the sought after basic fitness in youth players. 120 ice hockey players of several leagues had to go through either a Conconi test, or our modified, more sports specific Probst test. 54 of these were junior players (age 15-16). Our purpose in this paper is to discuss the aim of such endurance tests for youth players.
