Phonon thermal transport of URu2Si2: broken translational symmetry and strong-coupling of the "hidden order" to the lattice.

A dramatic increase in the total thermal conductivity (kappa) is observed in the hidden order (HO) state of single crystal URu2Si2. Through measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity, we explicitly show that the electronic contribution to kappa is extremely small, so that this large increase in kappa is dominated by phonon conduction. An itinerant BCS or mean-field model describes this behavior well: the increase in kappa is associated with the opening of a large energy gap at the Fermi surface, thereby decreasing electron-phonon scattering. Our analysis implies that the "hidden order" parameter is strongly coupled to the lattice, suggestive of a broken symmetry involving charge degrees of freedom.

Dimensional reduction at a quantum critical point.

Competition between electronic ground states near a quantum critical point (QCP)--the location of a zero-temperature phase transition driven solely by quantum-mechanical fluctuations--is expected to lead to unconventional behaviour in low-dimensional systems. New electronic phases of matter have been predicted to occur in the vicinity of a QCP by two-dimensional theories, and explanations based on these ideas have been proposed for significant unsolved problems in condensed-matter physics, such as non-Fermi-liquid behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity. But the real materials to which these ideas have been applied are usually rendered three-dimensional by a finite electronic coupling between their component layers; a two-dimensional QCP has not been experimentally observed in any bulk three-dimensional system, and mechanisms for dimensional reduction have remained the subject of theoretical conjecture. Here we show evidence that the Bose-Einstein condensate of spin triplets in the three-dimensional Mott insulator BaCuSi2O6 (refs 12-16) provides an experimentally verifiable example of dimensional reduction at a QCP. The interplay of correlations on a geometrically frustrated lattice causes the individual two-dimensional layers of spin-(1/2) Cu2+ pairs (spin dimers) to become decoupled at the QCP, giving rise to a two-dimensional QCP characterized by linear power law scaling distinctly different from that of its three-dimensional counterpart. Thus the very notion of dimensionality can be said to acquire an 'emergent' nature: although the individual particles move on a three-dimensional lattice, their collective behaviour occurs in lower-dimensional space.

Nonlocal magnetic field-tuned quantum criticality in cubic CeIn(3-x)Sn(x) (x = 0.25).

We show that antiferromagnetism in lightly (approximately 8%) Sn-doped CeIn3 terminates at a critical field mu0H(c) = 42 +/- 2 T. Electrical transport and thermodynamic measurements reveal the effective mass m* not to diverge, suggesting that cubic CeIn3 is representative of a critical spin-density wave (SDW) scenario, unlike the local quantum critical points reported in anisotropic systems such as CeCu(6-x)Au(x) and YbRh2Si(2-x)Ge(x). The existence of a maximum in m* at a lower field mu0H(x) = 30 +/- 1 T may be interpreted as a field-induced crossover from local moment to SDW behavior as the Néel temperature falls below the Fermi temperature.

Irreversible dynamics of the phase boundary in U(Ru0.96Rh0.04)2Si2 and implications for ordering.

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect-induced temperature changes at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru0.96Rh0.04)2Si2, which yield irreversible properties similar to those at the valence transition of Yb(1-x)Y(x)InCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which lattice parameter changes caused by an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.

Bose-Einstein condensation of S = 1 nickel spin degrees of freedom in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2.

It has recently been suggested that the organic compound NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 (DTN) undergoes field-induced Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of the Ni spin degrees of freedom. The Ni S = 1 spins exhibit three-dimensional XY antiferromagnetism above a critical field H(c1) approximately 2 T. The spin fluid can be described as a gas of hard-core bosons where the field-induced antiferromagnetic transition corresponds to Bose-Einstein condensation. We have determined the spin Hamiltonian of DTN using inelastic neutron diffraction measurements, and we have studied the high-field phase diagram by means of specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements. Our results show that the field-temperature phase boundary approaches a power-law H - H(c1) proportional variant T(alpha)(c) near the quantum critical point, with an exponent that is consistent with the 3D BEC universal value of alpha = 1.5.

Quantum critical 5f electrons avoid singularities in U(Ru,Rh)2Si2.

We present specific heat measurements of 4% Rh-doped URu2Si2 at magnetic fields around the proposed metamagnetic transition field H(m) approximately 34 T, revealing striking similarities to the isotructural Ce analog CeRu2Si2 for H>H(m). This suggests that strongly renormalized hybridized-band models apply equally well to both systems. The vanishing bandwidths as H-->H(m) are consistent with a quantum-critical point close to H(m). The existence of a phase transition into an ordered phase in the vicinity of H(m) for 4% Rh-doped URu2Si2, but not for CeRu2Si2, is consistent with a stronger superexchange in the case of the U 5f system. Irreversible processes at the transition indicate a strong coupling of the 5f orbitals to the lattice, most suggestive of electric quadrupolar order.

Phase diagram of the two-channel kondo lattice model in one dimension.

Employing the density matrix renormalization group method and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we study the phase diagram of the SU(2)xSU(2) Kondo lattice model in one dimension. We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations, while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one-quarter, we find a paramagnetic metallic phase at weak coupling and a ferromagnetic phase at moderate to strong coupling.

Direct observation of itinerant magnetism in the 5f-electron system UTe.

Our electron photoemission experiments demonstrate that the magnetization of the ferromagnetic state of UTe is proportional to the binding energy of the hybridized band centered around 50 meV below EF. This proportionality is direct evidence that the ferromagnetism of UTe is itinerant; i.e., the 5f electrons are not fully localized close to the atomic core. This mechanism of itinerant ferromagnetism differs from the traditional picture for 5f-electron magnetism in an essential and a novel way. We propose a simple model for the observed proportionality between the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the binding energy of the hybridized band near EF. This model allows us to estimate the effective magnetic interaction and to identify signatures of itinerant ferromagnetism in other materials.

Exact ground states of a frustrated 2D magnet: deconfined fractional excitations at a first-order quantum phase transition.

We introduce a frustrated spin 1/2 Hamiltonian which is an extension of the two dimensional J1-J2 Heisenberg model. The ground states of this model are exactly obtained at a first-order quantum phase transition between two valence bond crystals. At this point, the low energy excitations are deconfined spinons and spin-charge separation occurs under doping in the limit of low concentration of holes. In addition, this point is characterized by the proliferation of topological defects.

Magnetic-field-induced condensation of triplons in Han Purple pigment BaCuSi2O6.

Besides being an ancient pigment, BaCuSi2O6 is a quasi-2D magnetic insulator with a gapped spin dimer ground state. The application of strong magnetic fields closes this gap, creating a gas of bosonic spin triplet excitations. The topology of the spin lattice makes BaCuSi2O6 an ideal candidate for studying the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations as a function of the external magnetic field, which acts as a chemical potential. In agreement with quantum Monte Carlo numerical simulations, we observe a distinct lambda anomaly in the specific heat together with a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility upon cooling down to liquid helium temperatures.

Stripes, topological order, and deconfinement in a planar t-Jz model.

We determine the quantum phase diagram of a two-dimensional bosonic t-Jz model as a function of the lattice anisotropy gamma, using a quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. We show analytically that the low-energy sectors of the bosonic and the fermionic t-Jz models become equivalent in the limit of small gamma. In this limit, the ground state represents a static stripe phase characterized by a nonzero value of a topological order parameter. This phase remains up to intermediate values of gamma, where there is a quantum phase transition to a phase-segregated state or a homogeneous superfluid with dynamic stripe fluctuations depending on the ratio Jz/t.

Exact bond ordered ground state for the transition between the band and the Mott insulator.

We derive an effective Hamiltonian H(eff) for an ionic Hubbard chain, valid for t< >t) and the Mott insulator (MI) (U-Delta>>t). Using spin-particle transformations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 1082 (2001)]], we map H(eff)(U=Delta) into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known. In this way, we show rigorously that a spontaneously dimerized insulating ferroelectric phase appears in the transition region between the BI and the MI.

Intermediate coupling theory of electronic ferroelectricity.

We calculate the quantum phase diagram of an extended Falicov-Kimball model for one- and two-dimensional systems in the intermediate coupling regime. Even though some features of the phase diagram are obtained analytically, the main results are calculated with a constrained path Monte Carlo technique. We find that this regime is dominated by a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons with a built-in electric polarization. The inclusion of a finite hybridization between the bands removes the condensate but reinforces the ferroelectricity.

Hubbard model on decorated lattices.

We introduce a family of lattices for which the Hubbard model and its natural extensions can be quasiexactly solved, i.e., solved for the ground and low energy states. In particular, we show rigorously that the ground state of the Hubbard model with off-site Coulomb repulsions on a decorated Kagomè lattice is an ordered array of local currents. The low energy theory describing this chiral state is an S=1 / 2 XY model, where each spin degree of freedom represents the two possible chiralities of each local current.

Electronic ferroelectricity in the falicov-kimball model.

I show that a spontaneous electric polarization exists in the solution of the Falicov-Kimball model by mapping the strong coupling limit of this Hamiltonian into an xxz spin 1/2 model with a magnetic field. In this way, I determine the phase diagram of the strongly interacting model and show the existence of a transition to a mixed-valence regime containing two phases: an orbitally ordered state and a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons with a built-in electric polarization.

Segmented band mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism.

We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, which is based on a simple two-band model, and, by using numerical and analytical methods, we show that the periodic Anderson model contains this mechanism. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra-atomic Hund's coupling, is present in both the iron group and some f electron compounds.

Generalized Jordan-Wigner transformations.

We introduce a new spin-fermion mapping, for arbitrary spin S generating the SU(2) group algebra, that constitutes a natural generalization of the Jordan-Wigner transformation for S = 1/2. The mapping, valid for regular lattices in any spatial dimension d, serves to unravel hidden symmetries. We illustrate the power of the transformation by finding exact solutions to lattice models previously unsolved by standard techniques. We also show the existence of the Haldane gap in S = 1 bilinear nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spin chains and discuss the relevance of the mapping to models of strongly correlated electrons. Moreover, we present a general spin-anyon mapping for the case d < or = 2.
