Serotonergic-cholinergic neurotransmitters' function in brain during cadmium exposure in protein restricted rat.

Daily subcutaneous injection of cadmium chloride (0.3 mg/100g bw) for two weeks to normal and protein restricted (5% casein) rats shows significant decrease in 5-HT concentration in cerebellum, medulla oblongata-pons, hypothalamus, striatum-hippocampus, midbrain-thalamus-subthalamus, and cortex in both dietary regimens. No significant change occurs in concentration of ACh in cerebellum, but there is a significant increase in cortex, whereas significant decrease occurs in rest of the discrete regions of brain in both dietary conditions. Results also indicate that the intensity of cadmium effect is more evident in discrete brain regions in protein restricted dietary condition than in the normal group. The inhibitory action of Cd on both neurotransmitters has been discussed.

Evaluation of tissue ascorbic acid status in different hormonal states of female rat.

The distribution pattern of ascorbic acid in the endocrine organs and/or tissues was investigated during various sexual states of female rats to demonstrate a correlation between ascorbic acid concentration and sex hormone activity. The concentration of ascorbic acid was estimated in the plasma, liver, pancreas, thyroid, ovary, adrenal and pituitary of contraceptive steroid treated, bilaterally ovariectomized, sham-operated and normal control animals at four different phases of estrous cycle to delineate a relationship between the level of ascorbic acid in different organs/tissues at various sex hormonal states. Statistically significant changes were observed in the concentration of ascorbic acid in different endocrine organs/tissues following contraceptive steroid treatment, ovariectomy and during the estrous phases. Our results suggest that the concentration of ascorbic acid in the endocrine organs and/or tissues varies during different sexual states of rat.

Tissue ascorbate as a metabolic marker in cadmium toxicity.

Daily subcutaneous injection of cadmium chloride for two weeks to normal and protein restricted rats show significant increase in the wet weight of liver, kidney, adrenal and decrease in pituitary, testis and thyroid, while no significant changes are observed in the brain. The concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) decreased significantly in plasma, liver, kidney, spleen, adrenal, pituitary and brain but increased in testis and thyroid whereas no significant alteration was observed in the pancreas after cadmium treatment in both the dietary regimen. It is apparent that cadmium causes the alteration of AA in different tissues/organs of the body in normal protein dietary state which is further potentiated in protein restricted condition. During stress, the metabolism of different tissues responds differentially as far as their AA concentration is concerned. Therefore the alteration of AA level in the different tissues/organs might have some correlation with the extent of cadmium toxicity.

Relationship between central cholinergic and GABAergic neurotransmitters activity in the steroid treated rat.

Contraceptive steroid treatment to female rat alters the concentration of acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid, though not uniformly in most of the brain areas, i.e. in cerebellum, medulla oblongata-pons, hypothalamus, striatum-hippocampus, midbrain-thalamus-subthalamus, and cortex. Both neutrotransmitters vary conjointly in the hypothalamus and striatum-hippocampus after combined steroid treatment. This may indicate a concerted effect on the modulation of gonadotrophin release.

Influence of jute (Corchorus olitorius) seed protein enriched diet on some enzymes and liver lipids of albino rats (Rattus norvegicus).

The effect of protein, isolated from Jute (Corchorus olitorius) seed was studied upon albino rats with respect to some of their serum, liver and intestinal enzymes and liver lipids. An increase in the body weight (including the weight of the liver) was noted in test animals after feeding with a Jute seed protein enriched diet. It was also observed that AST, ALT and total lipid of liver increased significantly whereas AST and ALT of serum were decreased. An increase in the concentration of lipids in the liver was found and this may be due to excess of the seed protein in the diet. An overall observation reveals that there is slight fatty infiltration in the liver of test animals.

Effect of combined ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel oral contraceptives on hepatic functions of albino rats.

The effect of two different doses of ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel combined oral contraceptives (OCs) on hepatic functions of albino rats was studied for a period of six months. Combined OCs treatment caused an increase in glycogen, RNA, total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol and free fatty acids contents of liver and liver microsomes and decreased the liver weight/body weight ratio and phospholipid contents. Liver aminotransferase activities were elevated in the OCs treated animals whereas alkaline phosphatase activity remained unchanged. The biochemical changes were found to be dose dependent. Thus the present study has shown that the combined OCs treatment for six months is associated with altered hepatic functions. The possible mechanism of such an alteration of hepatic functions on OCs treatment is discussed.
