[Plasma levels of lipids and apoprotein in a group of middle-school students 11-14 years of age: preliminary data].

Plasma lipids and apoprotein A and B levels were measured in 63 children, of both sexes, in the age range 11-14 years. The children have been subjected to a blood drawing after a 12 hour fast at least. Statistical analysis proves that total cholesterol (TC) is positively correlated with triglycerides (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL) with apolipoproteins A (Apo A), apolipoproteins A (Apo A) with apoproteins B (Apo B). In the end we confirm the utility of determining plasma lipids and apoproteins to estimate lipidic risk for atherosclerosis in pediatric age.

[The breast in adolescence. Physiopathological and clinical considerations].

Mammary pathology, during adolescence, is an uncommon event and generally not very serious. During this growth period the different tissue mammary components are influenced by metabolic and hormonal stimulus in a proliferative and differentiative sense. In this growth period an efficient clinical approach is really necessary and it must not be only confined to senologic control, but inserted in the traditional semeiotics of a teenage patient, associated with a practice of self-palpation from the conclusive phases of the mammary development.

[Serum T3, T4, FT3, TSH and TBG in Turner's syndrome].

Turner's syndrome was originally reported as sexual infantilism, short stature, webbed neck and cubitus valgus. Subsequent investigations, however, have disclosed many other abnormalities both in chromosomal and physical features occurring in this syndrome. An increased prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with Turner's syndrome has been well documented and molecular defects of the TBG have been described. In our study we examined serum T3, T4, FT3, FT4, TSH and TBG levels in 18 girls with Turner's syndrome, in 18 healthy control girls and in the parents of both groups. We reported significant elevated levels of T3 and FT3 in the Turner's group (P 0.01). We did not find any quantitative abnormalities of immunoreactive TBG in the same patients.

[Correlations between individual and familial variables in Turner's syndrome].

In 20 cases of Turner's syndrome (10 with complete X monosomy, 10 with partial X monosomy or mosaicism) aged 3.47 to 15.5 years, the stature of the individual cases and their parents were evaluated. A significant frequency of short stature in mothers (25% below--2.0 S.D.S) has been observed, with a significant difference compared to the mean female stature of the general population. No significant difference has been observed on the stature of fathers. There was a closer correlation with mother's height (r = 0.65, p = 0.001) than with father's height (p = 0.07).

Therapeutic efficacy of ketanserin, a selective antagonist of the serotonin (5-HT2) receptors, in primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon.

Fourteen ambulatory and hospitalized patients with primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon have been examined before and after a thirty-one-day therapeutic trial. The treatment was conducted in two cycles. The first one lasted ten days, during which placebo was administered. The second cycle lasted three weeks, during which ketanserin, a selective antagonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT2) receptors, was administered. The therapeutic effect consisted of the complete healing of digital ulcers in 4 of 5 patients and a considerable decrease in the number, length, and severity of daily attacks. To evaluate the digital blood flow, each patient was submitted to a medical dynamic telethermographic test. This, after the cooling test, demonstrated an average decrease of twenty minutes in the time necessary to reestablish basal thermal conditions (T') at the end of an adequate period of therapy using optimal doses of the drug. The authors affirm that orally administered ketanserin has a beneficial effect and can be well tolerated in subjects with Raynaud's phenomenon.

Acute-phase proteins in perinatal human plasma.

Plasma from eight newborns (4 pre-term and 4 full-term) with early-onset (< 72 h) sepsis and six apparently healthy controls was analyzed. The presence of spots identified as haptoglobin and serum amyloid A protein was the electrophoretic result most consistently associated with disease. Time course monitoring showed rises, peaks and declines of spot intensity as expected for acute-phase proteins induced by transient stimuli. Haptoglobin beta chains appear to be undersialated in pre-term newborns, whereas post-translational modifications of alpha chains and serum amyloid A protein are similar to those observed in adults. The undersialation of beta chain and occurrence of alpha chain phenotypes different from those found in maternal serum indicate that perinatal haptoglobin originates from neonatal synthesis.

Changes in cerebrospinal fluid biotinidase activity in Staphylococcus aureus meningitis.

An early increase in activity of biotinidase in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during the course of acute Staphylococcus aureus meningitis in a subject with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is reported. A possible role of CSF biotinidase in the hydrolysis of specific opioid neuropeptides during acute inflammatory processes involving the CSF-central nervous system compartment is suggested.

Risk factors for psoriasis: a retrospective study on 501 outpatients clinical records.

Possible risk factors for psoriasis were studied by means of a retrospective evaluation of epidemiological and clinical features in 472 clinical records of outpatients affected by plaques psoriasis. We calculated the relation between the categorical variables with chi-squares contingency table analysis (with Yates correction) and odds ratio (O.R.) from the two variables with their respective confidence intervals at 95%. Among patients 267 were men (57%) and 205 women (43%); the mean age was 46.5+/-16.7 years, with no differences in sex. A significant relationship was found between age at onset < or =40 years and familiarity for psoriasis (p<0.0001-O.R.=2.71, C.I..95%: 2.12-3.48). The percentage of men with extensive lesions (extension >30%) was significantly higher than of women (p<0.05-O.R.=1.60, C.I..95%:1.35-1.90). Moreover, a significant association between extension of lesions and BMI was detected (p<0.0107-O.R.=2.10, C.I.95%:1.33-3.30) and the strength of this relation was assessed using the linear regression test. Mean age at onset was significantly lower in patients systemically treated (p<0.0003-O.R.=2.61, C.I.95%: 1.69-4.04). The results obtained can provide the basis for a standard clinical record, including data for a prospective study that may confirm the relation between psoriasis and some risk factors.

[Assessment of radiation dose to patients in hysterosalpingography].

INTRODUCTION: The optimization principle applied to the patient radioprotection, recently introduced in Italian legislation, requires a careful analysis of the working procedures and clinical protocols generally used in radiological practice, to avoid unnecessary exposures with no loss in diagnostic information. We carried out this analysis in hysterosalpingography, which is the radiological examination usually performed on fertile women to detect uterine and tubal conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The dosimetric survey was carried out on 35 patients, 22 to 40 years old, to evaluate: a) entrance dose and dose x area product; b) doses to the most irradiated organs, that is ovaries and uterus; c) effective dose equivalent and effective dose. The doses were measured with LiF thermoluminescent dosimeters, while an ionization chamber enabled us to the calculate dose area product. Ovaries and uterus doses were calculated with a Monte Carlo program using skin entrance exposure data and some technical parameters of the examination. RESULTS: The good agreement of the results obtained with both dosimetric methods demonstrated their equivalence in this specific case where the use of a clinical protocol, with no lateral projection, made the dosimeters lie always within the X-ray beam. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The mean dose was 4.5 mGy for the ovaries and 6.2 mGy for the uterus. Following the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, both effective dose equivalent, with a mean value of 2.0 mSv, and effective dose, with a mean value of 1.95 mSv, were estimated. In conclusion, our results show that the patient dose can be reduced by limiting the use of fluoroscopy, using small size films and decreasing the number of exposures.
