The performance of a commercial latex agglutination test for screening rubella antibodies was investigated, using two panels of selected serum samples especially designed for a careful evaluation of sensitivity. Three false negative results were obtained on samples with very low levels of antibody. However, the test had higher sensitivity than the hemagglutination inhibition test and fluoroimmunoassay when samples were tested undiluted. False positive results were not obtained, and prozone reactions were not observed. The test is a very practical method for screening rubella antibodies in primary health care units.

Three commercial methods (enzyme immunoassay, fluoroimmunoassay and latex agglutination) and a complement fixation test were compared for detection of cytomegalovirus antibodies using a panel of 490 serum samples from blood and organ donors, from immunocompromised patients and paired sera from five patients with recent cytomegalovirus infection. An indirect immunofluorescence test for antibodies to cytomegalovirus was used for classifying samples giving discrepant results by any of the four methods. All methods showed high sensitivity and specificity, but the enzyme immunoassay and the latex agglutination tests had the highest sensitivity. Latex agglutination is recommended for large-scale screening of cytomegalovirus antibodies in blood and organ donors. Negative results obtained by latex agglutination should be confirmed by sensitive enzyme immunoassays.
The cell substratum attachment (CSAT) antibody recognizes a 140-kD cell surface receptor complex involved in adhesion to fibronectin (FN) and laminin (LM) (Horwitz, A., K. Duggan, R. Greggs, C. Decker, and C. Buck, 1985, J. Cell Biol., 101:2134-2144). Here, we describe the distribution of the CSAT antigen along with FN and LM in the early avian embryo. At the light microscopic level, the staining patterns for the CSAT receptor and the extracellular matrix molecules to which it binds were largely codistributed. The CSAT antigen was observed on numerous tissues during gastrulation, neurulation, and neural crest migration: for example, the surface of neural crest cells and the basal surface of epithelial tissues such as the ectoderm, neural tube, notochord, and dermomyotome. FN and LM immunoreactivity was observed in the basement membranes surrounding many of these epithelial tissues, as well as around the otic and optic vesicles. In addition, the pathways followed by cranial neural crest cells were lined with FN and LM. In the trunk region, FN and LM were observed surrounding a subpopulation of neural crest cells. However, neither molecule exhibited the selective distribution pattern necessary for a guiding role in trunk neural crest migration. The levels of CSAT, FN, and LM are dynamic in the embryo, perhaps reflecting that the balance of surface-substratum adhesions contributes to initiation, migration, and localization of some neural crest cell populations.
Nineteen diabetic patients with end-stage renal disease on CAPD were evaluated over a 2 year period. All but one patient was insulin-dependent, with a mean age of 47.7 years. Average time on CAPD was 16.1 months (range, 2-28 months). Thirteen patients were followed for more than 12 months, and nine for more than 18 months. The mean training period was 22.9 days. Good blood glucose control was obtained with intraperitoneal (IP) insulin in all of the patients. Mean blood glucose levels of 125 +/- 23.08 mg/dl were achieved with 103 +/- 38.5 U/day of regular IP insulin. Glycosalated hemoglobin decreased from a mean of 12.7 +/- 2.35% before CAPD to 10.08 +/- 0.97% during CAPD. Peritoneal creatinine clearance remained stable during the study period, with a concommitant decrease (P less than 0.001) in the mean residual renal creatinine clearance. The incidence of peritonitis was one episode per 7.8 patient-months. Average length of hospitalization was 33.24 days/year. Visual acuity remained stable after 1 year in 73% of the 26 eyes evaluated. No amputations were required in more than 2 years of follow-up. Actuarial survival was 100% at 1 year and 86% at 2 years, and the technique survival of CAPD was 91 and 79%, respectively. These results demonstrate that CAPD is a good dialysis procedure for treating diabetic patients with chronic renal failure, and it offers the advantage of controlling glycemia better than other dialysis methods.

In contrast to malignant oncocytomas of the parotid gland, malignant oncocytomas arising from minor extraparotid glandular tissue are rare. The latter may display a locally aggressive behaviour as well as a variable tendency to develop secondary cervical lymph nodes. We report a new case of malignant oncocytoma in a 43-year-old man presenting with greatly enlarged cervical lymph nodes accompanied by a poorly defined swelling at the base of the tongue microscopically identified as a malignant oncocytoma. The diagnosis was strongly supported by the ultrastructural features of the cells almost completely filled with mitochondria. The cervical mass was excised, and the patient has suffered no recurrence for nearly 2 years after surgical treatment.
UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to demonstrate that blockade by bupivacaine of nociceptors located at the same level than the anterior tonsillar pillar, can reduce the pain in the postoperative period following tonsillectomy, thus, making easier the recovery of these patients at home. For this purpose, fifty children aged 2 to 13 years old, are studied. A double blind study is performed distributing the children randomly in two groups. One group is infiltrated prior to surgery with 1 cm3 of bupivacaine 0.25% + epinephrine 1:200,000 in three points of the anterior tonsillar pilla, while the other group is infiltrated with normal saline. The pain in the immediate postoperative period (60 minutes) is classified in five categories by a visual pain scale (scored 1-10). Short term postoperative (7 days) is also classified in five categories by a scale (scored 1-10) based in the information provided by the mother. Statistical analyses of the data is performed considering the statistical significance of the correlations obtained from the Chi2 and Student's tests. CONCLUSION: pre-incisional infiltration in the anterior tonsillar pillar with bupivacaine in the tonsillectomy will cause a remarkable reduction in the intensity of the postoperative pain.
