The hospitalization experience and single-parent families. A time of special vulnerability.

Hospitalization of a child is always stressful to families. For families without two parents to share the responsibilities and support one another, the stress is not easily borne. Furthermore, such families are likely to already have additional stresses related to the reason for the family breakup (divorce or death of a parent) and have the limited resources of single-parenthood: financial, social, time, and energy. If nurses and other health care personnel will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these vulnerable families and offer support and workable solutions to relieve specific pressures, these families may cope with the stresses more competently and, indeed, may discover new resources within themselves, with their families, and with their nonfamily support systems that can be used again in times of crisis. Ultimately the competent family will be able to nurture the child optimally, no matter what the specific health problems. Therefore pediatric nurses supporting the family also support the hospitalized child.

Health care in China.

Maternal-child nurses are part of a growing number of Americans who have had the opportunity to visit China. An increased understanding of the history and of the health care practices of the Chinese people lends itself to an examination of American values and health practices. The insight developed may aid us as we seek to understand our own health care practices for women and children and to plan for the future in health care.

A short-term intensive training program for pediatric nurse practitioners.

A pediatric nurse practitioner course has been described in which 30 nurse trainees spent six seeks in an intensive training program followed by six months of preceptorship with a pediatrician in their own agency. This short but intensive program had advantages of permitting the PNP student to retain her health care agency position during the intensive part of the program and of assuring her a position as a PNP once the course was completed. Evaluation of the students by written and practical examinations indicated that they had made significant gains in their knowledge and understanding of pediatrics and in their ability to evaluate and refer patients and to provide well-child care and maternal counseling.

Demonstration of whole blood analysis using proton-induced x-ray emission.

The elemental variations in whole blood following gamma-radiation injury of mice have been studied. the trace-element analyses were performed using the proton-induced x-ray emission technique, and the results were compared with the red blood-cell count. It is shown that, by using this method, the variation of the six elements, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Rb, can be studied simultaneously.

Experiences with a support group for grandparents of children with disabilities.

A support group for grandparents of children with severe disabilities was developed to meet grandparents' needs and to maximize their ability to serve as resources for the parents. Discussion themes provide insights into their experiences. Issues not previously discussed in the grandparenting literature are disclosed.
