Pulmonary involvement in Behçet's syndrome.

We present a case of Behcet's syndrome with unusual pulmonary manifestations. A woman presented five years previously with oral, genital and ocular lesions found on biopsy to be consistent with Behcet's syndrome. While on prednisolone, she complained of nonpleuritic chest pain. Clinical features of active Behcet's syndrome were absent. A previously normal chest x-ray film showed multiple intrapulmonary lesions. Laboratory abnormalities were consistent with findings seen in phases of disease activity. Bronchoscopy showed ulceration of the bronchial mucosa, but no evidence of opportunistic infection or neoplasia. Pulmonary angiography excluded vaso-occlusive abnormalities. A provisional diagnosis of pulmonary involvement with Behcet's syndrome was made and the patient responded to further immunosuppressive therapy.

Safety of lasalocid in turkeys and its compatibility with tiamulin.

An investigation involving 640 turkeys demonstrated that the inclusion of lasalocid continuously from day-old to 16 weeks of age, at levels up to 375 ppm in the feed, produced no adverse effects; furthermore, the inclusion of 125 ppm lasalocid in the feed was compatible with the administration of 250 ppm tiamulin in the drinking water continuously for five days to turkeys over the same age range.

Rapid development of diffuse crescents in post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

A 14-year-old boy presented with 3 days of hematuria and oliguria following impetigo. Renal biopsy showed diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis with subendothelial electron dense deposits but no crescents. Due to recrudescence of clinical abnormalities after initial improvement, the patient was re-biopsied 10 days later. This biopsy showed circumferential crescents in 83% of the glomeruli. Treatment with intensive plasma exchange, prednisolone, cyclophosphamide and dipyridamole was accompanied by prompt improvement in renal function. The need to carefully monitor the course in patients with acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is emphasized.

Effect of avoparcin interaction with anticoccidial compounds on the growth and carcase composition of broilers.

The anticoccidial drugs narasin, lasalocid, monensin and salinomycin, with and without avoparcin, were fed to 1280 broiler chickens from 1 to 49 d old. At day 49 significant interactions were detected between avoparcin and the anticoccidial compounds for body weight and food consumption. This indicated that the increases in body weight and food consumption obtained with avoparcin were greater with some anticoccidial compounds (lasalocid and salinomycin for body weights and lasalocid for food consumption) than with others (monensin and narasin for body weights and monensin, narasin and salinomycin for food consumption). Overall there was evidence that avoparcin increased body weight (5.8%), food consumption (2.5%) and efficiency of food utilisation (2.9%). In addition avoparcin produced significant increases in plucked weight and the proportion of visceral fat together with and decreases in the proportions of edible giblets and waste offal.
