The role of the thyroid hormones on the decrease of cholesterolemia produced by a thymus fraction.

The purpose of this paper is to establish whether the hypocholesterolemic effect of thymus fraction administered to rats fed on a fat diet is correlated to an activation of thyroid. By determining the plasma levels of T3,T4 by kit set/RIA and TSH by the method of Jaquet et al., modified for rats, the authors may exclude this hypothesis confirming the results of Comsa et al, of an inhibitory effect of thymus in TSH secretion.

[Effects of 2 thymus extracts on blood levels of cholesterol and glucose in the rat].

The effects of two calf thymus extracts (fraction III and Tp1) on the haematic levels of cholesterol and glucose in the rat on a fat diet have been compared. The fraction III carries out a very marked decrease of cholesterolemia without changes in the levels of glycemia. On the contrary the Tp1 determines only a moderate decrease of cholesterolemia but a very marked decrease of glycemia. Thherefore these results seem both to confirm the differences between the two thymus extracts and the metabolic actions of thymus.

[Estrogen receptors in rabbit thymus].

The estrogen receptors presence or absence in the thymus gland represents the basic element to assert or to exclude any estrogenic action in the thymus. Now we have measured the presence of cytoplasmatic estrogen receptors in the female rabbits thymus, using some methods (sucrose gradient, protamine sulphate, dextran-coated charcoal). Finally, we have investigated, using the sucrose gradient assay, the nuclear ER presence in 1000g thymic pellet. The results exclude high levels of estrogen-binding proteins while don't suggest their total absence in the female rabbit thymus.

Cholesterol and triglycerides of the liver after administration of a chromatographic fraction of thymus: variations in tissue and blood.

In rats fed on a fat diet and injected with a chromatographic thymus fraction, intrahepatic distribution of cholesterol and triglycerides have been studied. The results show that the hematic decrease of these compounds, always observed in previous works, is accompanied by a smaller infiltration in hepatocytes and the lipidic drops are more finely dispersed. These results lead us to suppose that liver is a target organ of the thymus fraction.

[Lipid content of aorta, spleen and kidneys in rats on a high fat diet and treated with a chromatographic thymus gland fraction].

A chromatographic fraction obtained from a thymus homogenate of young calf, was administered by intraperitoneal means to a distinct group of rats previously fed on a diet with high content of dietary fat for 50 days. The serum values of cholesterol and triglycerides and of total lipids in spleen, kidneys and aorta which were obtained from these animals were compared with those of rats fed on the same diet and not injected with the thymus fraction. The considerable decrease of the seric values was not followed by conparable results of the lipidic content in the organs.
