[Radiologic investigative technics].

The authors in a first part of their contribution indicate the various types of imaging investigations which can be used by the radiologist: Conventional radiographs og the thorax; Conventional complementary examinations: esophagogram, conventional tomography, tracheo-bronchography, angiography, pulmonary scintigraphies; Modern complementary investigations: CT echography, digitalized angiography, magnetic resonance imaging. In the second part of this article the authors explain which are the most appropriate procedures for every type of tracheal and/or bronchial malformation.

[Radiology in the diagnosis of volvulus caused by mesenteric rotation anomaly].

Thirty-eight children were operated on between 1974 and 1979 at the hôpital Trousseau for a volvulus of the small intestine due to an abnormal mesenteric rotation. These children may be classified into 3 groups: (1) peracute volvulus, most often neonatal, with intestinal necrosis, generally lethal; (2) acute volvulus, also neonatal, with a favorable outcome after treatment; (3) chronic volvulus, which may occur at any age and may be symptomatic or not. They carry a risk of acute complication, with possible intestinal necrosis. Radiology plays a part in the diagnosis of such anomalies of rotation complicated with volvulus. Upper gastrointestinal tract opacification with barium sulfate, showing the abnormal position of the duodenojejunal flexure and a corkscrew appearance allows surgical decision, as in all cases, treatment is surgical. It consists of derotation and setting in complete common mesentery position.

[Avulsion of the posterior vertebral epiphysis and lumbar disk herniation in adolescents].

In adolescents, on lateral radiographs of the vertebral column, the avulsion of a lumbar posterior ring epiphysis is a good argument suggesting a posterior herniation of the intervertebral disk. Two such cases are reported. The pathogeny of this tearing, unusual in adults, is discussed. This avulsion should be compared with the retromarginal anterior disk herniations, often observed at this age.

[Osteoarticular lesions in pain perception deficit disorders in children].

Deficiency of pain perception may be at the origin of bone and/or joint lesions. In children, these lesions frequent give rise to surprising and misleading radiological images as a result of the usual lack of immobilization due to a delayed diagnosis. Alterations in bone structure at the metaphyses and corticoperiosteal ossifications can suggest malignant affections. Trauma is generally the predominant factor in the etiology of these lesions.

[Dose evaluation during radiographic examinations of the pelvis in pediatrics].

Dosimetry studies, employing a model, were conducted under the technical conditions established by one of the authors for exploration of the infant and child pelvis during diagnosis and treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip. Based on this data, it was confirmed that the dose applied to the various organs of a patient can be evaluated by using a relation identical to that employed for calculating the dose during radiotherapy. The results measured experimentally or calculated from the proposed formula, were comparable to those in the published literature. This method of dose assessment is valid not only in pediatric radiology, and whatever the region explored, but also for radiodiagnosis in adults.

[Lipoma of the posterior mediastinum. 2 cases in children].

The authors report the cases of 2 children, 12 and 4 years old respectively, presenting with a lipoma of the postero-superior mediastinum, that were investigated within a 6 year-period. Costal erosions were present in both cases with intraspinal extension in one child. Standard X-ray films should have led to the diagnosis, because of the relative low density of the mass considering its volume. In one case, CT scan confirmed the homogeneous fatty nature of the mass.

[Diffuse cystic angiomatosis of bone. A report on one case followed-up over five years (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of diffuse cystic angiomatosis of bone. The follow-up over five years showed a dramatic worsening which has seldom been observed. The roentgenographic aspect of this rare disease seems always similar, but non specific. The pathologic diagnosis is difficult. The bony involvement is due to a widespread vascular dysplasia, and the final diagnosis relies upon the association with other arteriovenous or lymphatic disorders, or with an abnormal lymphogram.
