In order to be comparable, and efficient, the descriptions need to be as complete as possible and realized according to the same parameters. In this respect, we present the standard description of Phlebotomine sandflies elaborated by an American network of entomologists in a collaborative program dedicated to the creation of a Computer Aided Identification Program for Phlebotomine Sandflies of South and Central America (CIPA programme).

Twenty eight patients have been treated; 8 patients had atrial fibrillation (FA) and 20 supraventricular paroxysmal (SVPT) tachycardia. Both diseases followed interventions of major surgery. No patient had myocardial ischemia and/or damaged conduction system, took any heart-related drug, or showed any risk factor. The posologic plans was as follows: a) bolus i.v. (three minutes) with 2 Amiodarone vials and electrocardiographic monitoring, then b) 10-20 mg/kg/day for three days with electrocardiographic monitoring. Within 5 days, all patients attained the total recovery from SVPT; AF regressed during the bolus injection in 1 patient, on the first day in 5 patients, and on the third day in the remaining 2 patients. During the hospitalization no important side effects occurred, except for transient hypotension in three subjects. The 6 months follow up did not reveal signs of intolerance, either. Amiodarone thus showed to be useful and well tolerated in the treatment of post-surgical hyperkinetic arrhythmias in patients undergoing major surgery.
Isozyme data were used to identify populations of certain Lutzomyia taxa in the verrucarum species group, mostly in the series townsendi. Lutzomyia youngi Feliciangelis and Murillo and L. spinicrassa Morales, Osorno, Osorno, and Hoyos each have diagnostic allomorphs for phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) and fumarate hydratase (FUM). The 6PGDH and FUM data and those from 6-phospho-fructokinase and phosphoglucomutase distinguish Lutzomyia sp., a new species from Columbia to be described and named later. Data from these enzymes and glucose phosphate isomerase will separate L. townsendi (Ortiz) from the others and from L. longiflocosa Osorno, Morales, Osorno, and Hoyos, L. quasitownsendi Morales, Osorno, Osorno, and Hoyos, and L. sauroida Osorno, Morales, and Osorno (three species that are inseparable using enzyme data). Three other species, L. serrana (Damasceno and Arouck) (series serrana) and L. columbiana (Ristorcelli and Van Ty) and L. andina Osorno, Osorno, and Morales (both in series verrucarum), are morphologically distinct using conventional characters and have fixed diagnostic differences at several enzyme loci. Statistical analyses of the enzyme data using genetic identities (I), differences (D), and the amount of genetic variation among these taxa indicated that such statistics can be as useful in the study of sand fly phylogeny and population genetics as they have been for other organisms. I and D values indicated that L. longiflocosa, L. quasitownsendi, and L. sauroida are very similar (I = 0.991 and D = 0.010) and possibly are populations of the same conspecific species. The levels of divergence, based on combined enzyme data for up to 21 gene loci among the taxa, are discussed, and a dendrogram based on genetic distance is presented. The genetic data confirmed established phylogenetic relationships among the sand fly taxa based on structural similarities.
The brain cell karyotypes of six New World sand flies are described and compared. Lutzomyia trapidoi has three pairs of chromosomes, 2N = 6. The other species, L. gomezi, L. erwindonaldoi, L. carmelinoi, L. walkeri and L. columbiana, have four pairs of chromosomes, 2N = 8. No heteromorphic chromosomes were observed. Cytogenetic similarities among sand fly species are discussed.

In rat fat cells incubated for 15 min at 37 degrees and pH 8.5, glycerol release was highly stimulated both by norepinephrine and by theophylline. Prostacyclin (PGI2) (10(-8)-10(-7)M) did not alter the basal rate of glycerol release but potentiated the lipolytic effect of 2 X 10(-6)M norepinephrine. The rate of norepinephrine-induced glycerol release was increased by PGI2 during 10 min of incubation and then maintained for the next 5 min. Lipolysis induced by concentrations of norepinephrine which produced maximal effects was not altered by PGI2. PGI2 (10(-7)-10(-6)M) also potentiated the effect of 5 X 10(-4)M theophylline on glycerol release, but antagonized the stimulation induced by a maximally effective concentration of the methylxanthine (2 X 10(-3)M). Incubation of the cells with norepinephrine in the presence of 2 X 10(-4) or 5 X 10(-4)M theophylline caused a loss of the potentiating effect of PGI2 on norepinephrine-induced lipolysis. In the presence of 10(-3)M theophylline, the lipolytic action of norepinephrine was inhibited by PGI2. In fat cells incubated with adenosine deaminase (0.5 U/ml), 2.5 X 10(-7)M PGI2 did not alter the response to 5 X 10(-4)M theophylline and inhibited the effect of norepinephrine both in the absence and in the presence of theophylline. The present results show that, under appropriate experimental conditions, PGI2 may act as a lipolytic agent in isolated fat cells and that some kind of interaction exists between stimulation of methylxanthine-sensitive adenosine receptors and stimulation of PGI2 receptors.
We have been using digital subtraction angiography for a year. The advantages as compared with customary angiography are pointed out. Some examples are used to illustrate its use.

The case of a 78-year-old man with retroperitoneal hemorrhage due to a ruptured right inferior suprarenal artery aneurysm is presented. The diagnosis was made by angiography which allowed immediate embolization of the neck of the aneurysm, controlling hemorrhage and obviating the need for surgery. The patient made a full recovery with no evidence of further hemorrhage.
PURPOSE: To evaluate retrospectively the role and the effectiveness of self-expandable Wallstents and balloon-expandable Strecker stents in patients with inoperable malignant obstruction of the biliary tree. METHODS: Fifty patients with malignant biliary obstruction were treated from August 1991 to August 1992 by percutaneous placement of 55 metallic endoprostheses (39 Wallstents, 16 Strecker stents). All patients were followed by clinical evaluation, laboratory data, and ultrasonographic examination until death. RESULTS: Wallstent placement was successful in 36 patients without procedure-related complications. One partial occlusion after 1 year was resolved by percutaneous balloon dilatation. Fourteen patients were treated with 16 Strecker stents. Stenting was unsuccessful in four cases; four occlusions (after 6 h, 48 h, 2 and 6 months) were encountered. CONCLUSION: Wallstent endoprostheses have good results and long-term patency. There were some problems with Strecker stents during the placement and there was a higher occlusion rate.
A 71-year-old woman presented with a life-threatening thyroid hemorrhage after US-guided chemical parathyroidectomy. The diagnosis was made by angiography followed by immediate embolization of a pseudoaneurysm of the left superior thyroid artery. Embolization controlled the hemorrhage, obviating the need for surgery. The patient made a full recovery with no evidence of further hemorrhage. Pseudoaneurysm of the superior thyroid artery is a rare cause of hemorrhage and percutaneous embolization is an effective method of treatment.
The phlebotomine sand fly fauna of two coffee plantations in a Leishmania-endemic area of Norte de Santander, Colombia was studied. Regular insect collections using a variety of methods were made for three and a half years. Information was obtained on diurnal resting sites, host range and seasonal abundance for 17 species, of which five (Lutzomyia spinicrassa, Lu. serrana, Lu. shannoni, Lu. ovallesi and Lu. gomezi) were far more numerous than the others, anthropophilic and present throughout the year. The behaviour of these and the remaining 12 species is discussed in relation to their potential role in transmission of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in the area.
The CIPA programme is a collaborative project including two entomologists from France and seven from South and Central America countries. Its objective is the development of an expert system for computer aided identification of phlebotomine sandflies from the Americas. It also includes the formation of data bases for bibliographic, taxonomic and biogeographic data. Participant consensus on taxonomic prerequisites, standardization in bibliographic data collections and selection of descriptive variables for the final programme has been established through continuous communication among participants and annual meetings. The adopted check-list of American sandflies presented here includes 386 specific taxa, ordered into three genera and 28 sub-genera or species groups.
Lutzomyia longipalpis, 15 other species of the genus Lutzomyia, and one species of Brumptomyia were collected in an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in a river canyon 450 m above sea-level, in Rio Claro, Antioquia, Colombia. The presence of Lu. longipalpis is associated with the destruction of the primary forest and the development of new farmland and rural settlement in this region. The composition of species identified a different habitat for Lu. longipalpis in Colombia. Lu. yuilli and Lu. longipalpis were predominant (68.26%) followed by Lu. trapidoi, Lu. hartmani, Lu. triramula, Lu. panamensis, Lu. gomezi.
The life cycle of Lutzomyia shannoni (Dyar), was described for laboratory conditions with maximum daily temperature of 27-30 degree C, minimum daily temperatures of 22-27 degree C and relative humidity between 87-99%. Life cycle in each stage was as follows: egg 6-12 days (ave, 8.5 days); first stage larva 5-13 days (ave. 9.6 days); second stage larva 4-13 days (ave. 9.2 days); third stage larva 5-19 days (ave. 11.8 days); fourth stage larva 7-37 days (ave. 19.9 days); pupa 7-32 days (ave. 15.2 days). The life expectancy of adults ranged from 4 to 15 days (ave. 8.6 days). The entire egg to adult period ranged from 36 to 74 days (ave. 54.6 days). On average, each female oviposited 22.7 eggs; the average egg retention per female was 24.3 eggs.
