Eye symptoms and signs in buildings with indoor climate problems ('office eye syndrome').

Break-up time measurements and Lissamine green staining were performed on 169 office workers in 4 town halls in Copenhagen where the occupants complained about the indoor air quality. In a questionnaire investigation one year before the study it was found that 25% of all the employees had eye irritation several times a week. A statistically significant association (P less than 0.025) was found between eye irritation and unstable precorneal film (reduced break-up time) and/or lissamine green stained epithelial damage. There was a significant rank correlation between eye irritation and different degrees of dry eyes (P less than 0.00006). The investigation proved that eye irritation associated with indoor climate problems can be related to objective pathological changes in the eyes as found in the dry eyes. The findings constitute a new syndrome which I propose to name the 'office eye syndrome'.

Increased serum levels of alpha-2-macroglobulin in severe chronic airflow obstruction.

Serum levels of alpha-2-macroglobulin, the major proteinase inhibitor besides alpha-1-antitrypsin, were investigated in 20 patients with severe Chronic Airflow Obstruction (CAO), as compared to 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Alpha-2-macroglobulin was assessed by rocket immuno-electrophoresis, and alpha-1-antitrypsin by a laser-nephelometric method. All patients had spirometric values determined, including diffusing capacity. The reversibility test for isoprenalin was performed. Alpha-2-macroglobulin levels were found to be significantly elevated in patients with CAO, even when two patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency were omitted from the statistical evaluation. Except for these two patients, there was no difference in alpha-1-antitrypsin level between the patients and the control group. It is concluded that elevated levels of alpha-2-macroglobulin are associated with the development of severe CAO and emphysematous lesions, also in the absence of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.

Trypsin-inhibitory activities of acid-stable fragments of the inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor in inflammatory and uraemic conditions.

The concentration in serum of the acid-stable Mr 30.000 fragment of the Inter-alpha-Trypsin Inhibitor (SPI), and the acid-stable Mr 14.000 fragment of the inhibitor prepared by trypsin by digestion of the acid-precipitated serum proteins (API) was determined. A considerable increase in concentration of SPI and a decrease in concentration of API were observed in inflammatory conditions. In uraemic conditions the concentration of SPI was increased while that of API was unchanged.

[On the secretion pressure of the human parotid gland (author's transl)].

The secretion pressure as well as the speed of resorption for saliva and water in the parotid gland is studied by electromanometry in 40 male and 14 female healthy persons on stop-flow conditions in rest and after gustatory stimulation with lemon juice. The course of intraglandular pressure after stoppage and retrograde instillation of pure water is demonstrated by typical diagrams. The essentials are discussed. The mutual relations of the measured parameters and those existing with the age are examined by means of simple correlation and linear regression analysis. Results of this analysis show that the pressure of resting secretion diminishes due to increasing age. With increasing secretory activity of the parotid gland the speed of intraglandular resorption increases, too. Pure water with be resorpted more quickly than saliva. Sex differences are not existing.
