[Long term results after funnel chest reconstruction (author's transl)].

The results of 25 funnel chest operations are reported. All patients have been treated by a modified Ravitch method. Fixation of the anterior chest wall was achieved by inserting two metal wires. Cosmetic and functional results were critically examined postoperatively. For clinical assessment the cardiorespiratory and ergometric tests were analysed. Cosmetic results were graded by the classification of Hecker. All patients showed a very good cosmetic result. The functional situation could be improved only partially.

[Reconstruction of major chest wall defects by a latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap and autologous dermis graft (author's transl)].

In a case of breast cancer which infiltrated the anterior chest wall parts of the 4.-8. rib have to be resected. The defect of the chest wall measured 24 x 14 cm and was covered in two layers. By inserting an autologous dermis transplantant in the bony defect tightness and stability of the chestwall was achieved. The myocutaneous defect was covered by a latissimus dorsi island flap. Using this technique a perfect healing of the dermis graft was guaranteed.

[Functional, mechanical, and structural demands in microvascular prostheses (author's transl)].

Fundamental conclusions can be made based on initial experimental experiences concerning microvascular prostheses. Beside having high durability, the microprostheses need to be compatible with other tissues and easy to handle. They must have a microporous structure to allow tissue ingrowth. Negative surface charge, hydrophobic property, and inertness of the synthetic material contribute to avoiding thrombosis. The isodiametric relationship between vessel and micrograft appears to create an optimal hemodynamic situation. For insertion, the use of microsurgical techniques is necessary in determining the future of the implanted micrograft. By performing everting continuous over-and-over suture, the end-to-end anastomosis showed excellent results.

[Concentration course of Na-Penicillin G in wound secretions following vascular surgery].

After infusion of 10 and 20 M.I.U. of Na-penicilline G, the concentrations in serum, wound exudation, and urine were analysed, at equal points of time, following vascular reconstruction; pharmacokinetic data were calculated as well. The importance of local concentration of antibiotics for therapy and prevention of infections is emphasized - according to pharmacokinetics - in relation to the blood level. Simultaneously, the influence of pathological changes is discussed and represented by a brief case follow-up.

On the existence of intrahepatic bile duct shunts.

A combined scintigraphic-radiological method has been used to study the existence of intrahepatic shunts between the bile ducts of the right and left duct systems. With this method no shunts were found between the left and the right system. The results are compared with the findings reported in the literature.
