Susceptibility of Borna disease virus to the antiviral action of gamma-interferon: evidence for species-specific differences.

Borna disease virus (BDV) infection in its predominant natural host - horses and sheep - leads to fatal meningoencephalomyelitis. The immune-mediated disease can also be induced experimentally in rats following intra- cerebral BDV infection. Despite a vigorous immune response, BDV persists in the central nervous system (CNS) in surviving rats. However, immunization of rats with BDV-specific T-cells prior to challenge with BDV prevents neurological disease and results in virus clearance from the CNS. To analyze whether interferon gamma (IFNgamma) might contribute to viral clearance in the rat brain, we tested the susceptibility of BDV to the antiviral action of rat IFNgamma using different rat cell lines. Even at high concentrations of IFNgamma, BDV infection of astrocyte and fibroblast cell lines as well as of rat embryo cells could not be inhibited efficiently. Similarly, infection of cultured rat hippocampal slices with BDV was not inhibited by rat IFNgamma. In contrast, de novo BDV infection of monkey kidney cells as well as human oligodendroglial cells was blocked by preincubation with human IFNgamma. Furthermore, IFNgamma reduced the BDV load in persistently BDV-infected human oligodendroglial cells but not in infected rat astrocytes. These data suggest species-specific differences in the susceptibility of BDV to the antiviral action of IFNgamma.

[Plastic-metal bonding by the help of a silanizable silicatic porcelain layer for fusing to metal].

The use of Keramail (Keradenta/Wilde GmbH Radeberg) for fusing silicatic layers to metallic frameworks in a preheating furnace and the later on silianizing in order to bond teeth coloured veneering materials has proved laboratory and chemically. On the base of shearing tests with selected precious and non precious alloys the good bonding strength of this bonding system in comparison with the Silicoater-system is shown.

[Contribution for the method of testing the shearing strength of metal ceramic bonding system].

The shown method of testing the shearing strength of metal ceramic bonding systems has proved in connection with the development of metal ceramic materials and their handling as an efficient technique, which leads to reproducible results with a small dispersion. In divergence from the method of Schmitz and Schulmeyer we use material layers in a bigness, which allow usual laboratory manufacturing techniques and above it the bonding strength of single cera layers can be estimated.

[Contribution to the method of potentiodynamic polarization investigations to characterize the corrosion of dental alloys].

In an experimental study could be shown, that in corrosion investigations by help of the anodic polarization the sensity of the measurement of amperage is important. Testing alloy-systems like Remanium CS, which show passivation on a higher resting potential, mistakes in valuation of the corrosion behaviour by registration in a range of 10-50 muA/cm are possible.

[Investigations of chemical corrosion of Ni/Cr-alloys].

Dental final and auxiliary materials have to be biocompatible. Before using sumptuous biological testing methods corrosions studies allow to check up this property. Our investigations have been carried out by anodic polarization measurements. We tested traditional and further developed Ni/Cr-based alloys in independence to pH-value and composition of the electrolyte. The result is that the new with the help of an extensive experimental program developed Ni/Cr-based alloy Gisadent NCS 1 (Institute of Non-Precious Metals, Freiberg, GDR) shows a good corrosion resistance in comparison with other commercial products.

[Experimental examinations of heat expansion of Ni/Cr alloys].

On the base of experimental dilatometric investigations the thermal expansion behaviour of the Ni-Cri-based alloys Gisadent NCA, Gisadent NCS 1, Mikrostom-1, Wiron 77 and Wiron 88 was tested and the expansion coeffizient and the solid shrinkage determinated. The results are discussed referable to the compatibility metal/ceramic and in connection with the accuracy of fit of cast dental appliances.

[Comparative studies on the setting time of various phosphate cements and on the effect of differentiated powder-fluid ratios and air humidity on the setting time].

A comparative experimental study served to determine the standard consistency and setting time of various phosphate cements (according to DIN 13903). One of the products under investigation did not comply with standard specifications; therefore, from the viewpoint of setting behaviour, it cannot be recommended for cementing fixed tooth-restorations. It was shown that variations in the powder-liquid ratio affected the setting time, whereas variations in air humidity in the range from 50 to 100% exerted no signficant effects, which might lead to a simplication of material testing and quality control.
