[Development of an automatic reporting system for radioimmunoassay test (author's transl)].

The system consists of a conventional RIA total system with a desk-top computer system, and a filing and reporting system of the RIA data with a flexible disk and a printer. Patient's identification is registered in the computer at the time of reception to RIA test. Their identifications are, reception date, name of RIA test, patient name, age, sex, doctor's name, name of clinical department, in- or out-patient, number of samples and it's sampling time, examination date of assay and comments included normal value. These data are recorded to a flexible disk sheet, and are combined with RIA examination data, when data process of radioimmunoassay finished. Result of the RIA test is automatically printed by the printer. Printed parameters are results of examination with standard deviation, and above described patient identifications. If necessary, time activity curves of the density are plotted too. Accurate and automatically reporting system has been applied to the routine RIA test.

Vascular and airway pressures, and intersititial edema, affect peribronchial fluid pressure.

Peribronchial-perivascular fluid pressure (Px(f) was measured relative to pleural pressure in six freshly excised dog lobes. Rapidly equilibrating saline-filled open-end catheters were inserted between lobar bronchus and artery to depths of 3 cm from the hilum. Px(f) was -4 to -8 cmH2O at resting lung volume and became more negative as transpulmonary pressure (Ptp) was increased, and less negative as vascular volume was increased. For example, at constnat Ptp = 30 cmH2O, mean Px(f) rose, respectively, from -35 to -31, -24, -16, and -4 cmH2O, as vascular pressure (Ppa/pv) was increased from -15 to 0, +10, +20, and +30 cmH2O. Lung weight rose steadily at Ppa/pv above 10, reflecting the development of edema. Px(f) had a significant hysteresis with respect to Ptp, being more negative in deflation. As lung edema developed, Px(f) became progressively less negative or slightly positive (even at high Ptp and low Ppa/pv) and hysteresis diminished. Modified wick catheters employed in four additional lobes gave similar results. These data suggest that Px(f) is strongly influenced by bronchovascular-parenchymal interdependence, and that when regions with negative Px(f) absorb fluid the negative pressure may be eliminated.

[Results of treatment of congenital hip dislocation by extensionrepositioning and Hanausek-retention].

In the past 4 years all our patients below the age of three years, suffering from luxation or dysplasia of the hipjoint, were treated only conservatively. For repositioning we used a modified overhead-extension (Extensionsreposition). The "Hanausek-Apparat" was used only for retention. By this method all luxations could be reponed. Because of the low rate of re-dislocations and femur-head-nekroses, which decreased significantly from 23 per cent to 3.9 per cent, our method proved to be superior to manual repositioning under general anaesthesia, plaster-extension or early operation.

Healthy lifestyles are associated with higher lymphokine-activated killer cell activity.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between lifestyle factors and immune responses to tumors, we determined lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cell activity and proportions of lymphocyte subsets in 54 healthy males. METHODS: LAK cell activity was determined by 51Cr release assay. The proportions of natural killer cells (CD3-16+56-, CD3-16-56+ or CD3-16+56+ cells), helper/ inducer T cells (CD4+8-), and cytotoxic/suppressor T cells (CD4-8+) in lymphocytes were also determined by flow cytometry. Subjects were classified into two groups, good or poor overall lifestyle, according to their answers on a questionnaire regarding eight health practices (cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, physical exercise, mental stress, sleeping pattern, nutritional balance, eating breakfast, working pattern). RESULTS: Subjects with good health practices regarding smoking showed significantly higher LAK cell activity. They also showed a significantly higher proportion of natural killer cells and a lower proportion of helper/inducer T cells. LAK cells activity was significantly higher in subjects with a good overall lifestyle than in those with a poor overall lifestyle after controlling for the effects of smoking. There were no significant differences in the proportions of lymphocyte subsets between the two lifestyle groups. CONCLUSIONS: Lifestyle factors are associated with LAK cell activity and the proportion of lymphocyte subsets.
