A seven-year-old body with diurnal and nocturnal incontinence was found to have a dysplastic left kidney and an associated ectopic ureter in a single, system which opened beside the verumontanum. An intravesical bulge was identified which resembled a ureterocele but was, in fact, a dilated ectatic lower ureter proximal to the orifice of the ectopic opening bulging posteriorly into the bladder. This bulge masqueraded as a ureterocele.
A retrospective comparison of patients undergoing pelvic lymphadenectomy and iodine-125 implantation for localized prostatic cancer was undertaken. A control group of 276 patients was compared with 105 patients in a mini-dose heparin group. No protective benefit in the prevention of thromboembolic events was demonstrated. Operative and postoperative complications are reviewed.
An animal experiment was constructed to simulate the clinical entity of renal artery embolization. Because of the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with the current methods of treatment, percutaneous infusion of the renal artery with streptokinase was evaluated as a new method of therapy. Results were analyzed by the following criteria: (1) arteriography, (2) gross pathology, and (3) differential renal function studies. In 12 dogs whose left kidney was embolized without treatment, renal function was 38 per cent of the contralateral normal kidney twenty-one days later. Seven dogs were embolized but treated immediately with intra-arterial streptokinase for six hours; renal function was increased to 58 per cent of the contralateral normal kidney. Various fibrinolytic agents and their possible clinical application in embolism are discussed.
The technique of vaginal cystectomy is described in 2 patients. These patients were particularly suited for vaginal cystectomy because severe lower abdominal scarring from previous multiple abdominal operations would have made the standard suprapubic approach difficult.
