Polymorphic oxidation of debrisoquine in women with breast cancer.

Oxidative polymorphism of debrisoquine (DBQ) was determined in 98 women with breast cancer (mean age 59.2 years, SD 10.7; 18 were premenopausal when diagnosed), and in 446 healthy control women (mean age 25.4 years, SD 9.15). All of them were free of drug interactions with oxidation of DBQ. Ten patients (10.2%), all of them postmenopausal when diagnosed, and 423 controls (5.2%), with values for metabolic ratio of DBQ greater than 12.6, were classified as poor metabolizers (PM) of DBQ (p = 0.006). Relative risk for developing breast cancer among women with PM phenotype was 2.09 (95% confidence limits 0.97-4.48). The PM status of DBQ might be a secondary risk factor for breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

Hepatic acetylator polymorphism in breast cancer patients.

Hepatic acetylator phenotype has been determined, using sulfamethazine, in 81 white Spanish women with histologically proven breast cancer and in 75 adequate female controls. No differences were detected in the distribution of acetylator phenotype between the two groups of slow acetylators, 49 patients (60.5%) and 45 controls (60%). The percentage of acetylated sulfamethazine in plasma for each phenotype was not different either. Our results suggest that there is no relationship between the hepatic acetylator polymorphism and the risk of developing breast cancer in women.

Hepatic acetylator phenotype in bladder cancer patients.

We determined the hepatic acetylator phenotype in 130 patients with transitional-cell carcinoma (urothelioma) of the bladder and, previously in 157 normal control subjects. Eighty-three patients (63.8%) and 90 control subjects (57.4%) were slow acetylators (p greater than 0.05). Patients of both phenotypes did not differ in the consumption of tobacco and coffee. Seventy-five patients were not exposed to occupational risk for bladder cancer and the distribution of acetylator phenotype in them was similar to that of the control group. The other 55 patients had been employed in jobs with an elevated risk for urotheliomas; 41 (74.5%) were slow acetylators, which represented a significant excess over the incidence of slow acetylators in the control group (57.4%) (p less than 0.05); 15 of these patients had worked in jobs with carcinogenic arylamines proven in the workplace environment (11 were slow acetylators). Our results suggest that the slow acetylator phenotype can facilitate the development of urothelioma in individuals with occupational risk.

Ecological aspects of nematode parasites of introduced salmonids from Valdivia river basin, Chile.

Between 1986 and 1987, 666 fishes distributed among the following species introduced in Chile, and from different sectors of the Valdivia river basin (39 degrees 30'-40 degrees 00'S, 73 degrees 30'-71 degrees 45'W), were examined: 348 Salmo trutta, 242 Salmo gairdneri, 24 Cyprinus carpio and 52 Gambusia affinis holbrooki. The presence of Camallanus corderoi and Contracaecum sp. in S. gairdneri and of C. corderoi in S. trutta is recorded in Chile for the first time. Cyprinus carpio and G. a. holbrooki did not present infections by nematodes. The prevalence and mean intensity of the infections by nematodes presented significant differences among some sectors of the Valdivia river basin. In general, the prevalence and intensity of the infections by C. corderoi were greater than those by Contracaecum sp. The infections in S. gairdneri were higher than in S. trutta. The sex of the hosts had no influence on the prevalence and intensity of the infections by both nematodes. The length of the hosts did have an influence, except in the case of the infections by Contracaecum sp. in S. gairdneri. The infrapopulations of both nematode species showed over-dispersion in most cases. The diet of the examined salmonids suggests that they would become infected principally through the consumption of autochthonous fishes.

[Goiter and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis].

Sixty patients with goiter, aged 3 to 16 years, 58 girls, were studied for evidence of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT). Thirty eight patients, 63%, presented two or more diagnostic elements of TLC, according to Fisher's criteria, with a high frequency of thyroid function involvement (47.4% had hypothyroidism and 18.4% had hyperthyroidism). The rest of the patients with diffuse goiter (37%) did not meet Fisher's criteria, they were mostly euthyroid (95%) and they were designated "non thyroiditis goiter". All patients with probable CLT had positive antimicrosomal antibodies at relatively high titer (greater than 1 x 600 in 71% of the cases) and 32% of them had both antimicrosomal and antithyroglobulin antibodies. In the "non thyroiditis goiter" group we found 28% of children with positive antimicrosomal antibodies at low titers (1 x 100 and 1 x 400, respectively). In a control group of 28 children of similar ages, without endocrine diseases neither familiar history of thyroid diseases only 3 (11%) cases showed positive antimicrosomal antibodies, always at low serum titers.
