Piezoelectric thick film ultrasonic transducers fabricated by a sol-gel spray technique.

Thick film broadband ultrasonic transducers (UTs) produced by a sol-gel spray technique and operated below 10 MHz are presented. These UTs are formed by dispersing PZT and LiTaO3 particles, respectively in Al2O3 and PZT sol-gel solution. The 50-100 microm thick films have been deposited on curved steel, flat steel and aluminum substrates and steel rods. Ultrasonic pulse-echo signals with a signal to noise ratio of more than 25 dB are experimentally obtained for the operating temperatures up to 250 degrees C.

Clad polymer buffer rods for polymer process monitoring.

Clad polymer buffer rods consisting of a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) core and a cladding made of a heat resistance epoxy aluminum composite are presented. The core has a uniform diameter or a taper shape. Ultrasonic measurement results indicate that the ultrasonic signal strength and signal to noise ratio of these clad rods are better than those of the non-clad PEEK rods for both longitudinal and shear waves because of the improved ultrasonic wave guidance in the core. Comparisons of these rods with those made of polymide and high-density polyethylene are given. Applications of these buffer rods for ultrasonic monitoring of polymer extrusion at temperatures up to 200 degrees C and pressures up to 180 psi are demonstrated. The monitoring results also reveal that within certain operating temperature and pressure range, clad polymer buffer rods show advantages over clad steel buffer rods.

Effects of thyroxine on infant development of undernourished rats.

The rehabilitative effects of exogenous thyroxine on infant development of undernourished animals were examined. Thyroxine injection accelerated the rate of body growth, age at eye opening, tooth eruption, and several emitted behaviors in undernourished infant animals. The data indirectly support previous findings that undernutrition induces hypothyroidism and that exogenous thyroxine might be an effective rehabilitative agent.
