Relation of functioning with beliefs about coping, and future time perspective.

51 college students were administered the Reasons for Living Inventory, Zimbardo's Time Perspective Inventory, and the Environmental Deprivation Scale-Questionnaire. Pearson product-moment correlations indicated that those functioning well (low scores on the Environmental Deprivation Scale-Questionnaire) tended to have high scores on the future subscale of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (r = -.45, p < .001). There were no significant correlations with the Reasons for Living Inventory's total score or its Survival and Coping Beliefs subscale (rs = .01 and .05, respectively). The results suggest the use of multidimensional cognitive and behavioral data to guide intervention to improve one's level of functioning. A limitation of the study is the small number of participants.

Correlation for Eysenck's measure of Psychoticism and the Environmental Deprivation Scale.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relatedness of the Psychoticism scale of Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire-Revised and the Environmental Deprivation Scale using college students as subjects. Each measure provides different information through varied techniques. Scores on both have been associated with antisocial behavior. The r of .61 is discussed in terms of the assessment of antisocial behavior.

A partial replication of Lippin (1990) using the Myers-Briggs type indicator with a sample of female prisoners.

A sample of 108 women incarcerated in a state prison who volunteered to participate in an employment seminar were given the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Comparison of the distribution of types here and in Myers and McCaulley's 1985 sample using a Selection Ratio Type Table for analysis indicated an overrepresentation of ISTJ, ISFJ, and ISTP. The ESFP and ESFJ types were underrepresented. Further analysis of the types and the relationship to criminal offense was not significant. Results are compared with those of Lippin from 1990.

Does substance abuse treatment have self-schematic effects?

A survey on alcohol and drug use was completed by 1,291 college students. As predicted from research on self-schemas, greater self-efficacy was associated with lower substance use among respondents who indicated having been treated for substance abuse but not among those who had not received treatment. Also, those who reported receiving treatment were more likely than the others to report having attended campus programs on substance abuse. These findings suggest that substance use and its control are important aspects of the self-definition of those who receive treatment for substance abuse.

Drooping out: Relationship of speaking anxiety to self-esteem, crime, and educational achievement.

This study focused on the relationship that anxiety about speaking has to educational achievement, self-esteem, and type of crime. The data gathered from 46 female felons indicated significant relationships and suggested that programs designed to decrease anxiety about speaking can be effectively presented. Perhaps such treatment should be the first step in developing and correcting deficiencies in skills thereby preventing the skid toward dropping out and delinquency.

Decreasing speech anxiety of female prisoners.

This study compared self-reported speech anxiety experienced by female prisoners before and after attending a special program within a state vocational facility. With high scores on the Personal Report of Confidence as a Speaker, 13 women volunteers were treated in a program incorporating various techniques including systematic desensitization, cognitive restructuring, skills training, and shaping. These components were presented in six 2-hr. sessions. Pre- and posttreatment comparisons showed a significant decrease in speech anxiety. Discussion focuses on basic characteristics relevant to this sample (short attention span and low reading levels) and limitations of an institutional nature such as excessive noise, lack of privacy, and restrictions on possession of study materials.
