[Articular chondrocalcinosis and sliding knee prosthesis].

The authors examined 24 files, involving 24 cases of arthroplastic knee surgery and revealing an articular chondrocalcinosis which was histologically proven. The mean post-operative follow-up took place in 30 months (1 to 5 years). The results were neither spectacular nor catastrophic. The overwhelming majority of the patients were satisfactory. 60% of those who had undergone surgery showed good objective results. Radiological aggravations were rare; the latter were not necessarily parallel to the clinical results. In conclusion, chondrocalcinosis does not appear to be an aggravating factor in the prognosis for sliding unicompartmental arthroplastia. The results were completely comparable to those in cases of osteoarthrositis without calcinosis. In both cases, the same encouraging results were observed, as well as the same doubts and uncertainty as to the future.

[Treatment of Ewing's sarcoma by radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy : results at 3 and 5 years (author's transl)].

The local treatment of Ewing's sarcoma by radiotherapy is classically linked to a very poor prognosis : 10 to 15% of 5 years survival, 75 to 95% of distant metastasis in 2 years. The combination of local radiotherapy to a systemic adjuvant chemotherapy have been recently shown to give a real benefit to this prognosis. The therapeutic trial of the EORTC and GETO, presented here allows us to hope a disease free survival at 5 years for 50% of our patients and a complete survival at 5 years for 56% of them.

[Surgical opening of the carpal tunnel. Long-term results].

The authors present the results of surgery of a short series cases of compression of the median nerve. All cases involved idiopathic acroparesthesia. The surgical technique was the same in all cases: opening and resection of the large annular ligament, and opening of "loge de Guyon". All the patients were seen again by the same observer 1 to 6 years later (average time after surgery 2 1/2 years). The results were excellent as regards pain and subjective sensory disorders. In contrast, the muscular atrophy was little improved. The results of comparative electric examinations (19 cases) were improved, except where there were pre-operative signs of considerable denervation. In conclusion, the authors think that surgical opening should be restricted to patients presenting signs of serious denervation and to those who no longer benefit from medical infiltration treatment.

[Early general complications of total hinged knee prosthesis].

16 early deaths (within 24 hours) were observed after 758 knee joint replacements. In eight instances the patient died during the operation, and the other eight few hours later. The author discussed several possible causes: toxicity of the monomere, fat embolism hyperpressure in the medullary canal, hemorrhage. Several per and post operative precautions are recomanded.
