In the whale the superficial layer of the epidermis (stratum paracorneum) is incompletely cornified and is characterized by high contents of phospholipids, neutral fats, and glycoproteins. This finding, and especially the structure of the dermis (hypodermis) in relation to its function, are discussed as to the role they play in the adaptation of whales to the aquatic environment.
There are differences in the skull of male and female cats. The temporal line of each parietal bone which lies close up to the median in the male cat, is a laterally curved line in female cats and castrated males. The temporal line continues to the external crista of frontal bone and forms in this way with the other side a small parietal plane in the male, and a arched one in female and castrated males. This is possibly caused by a sex hormone dependent formation of temporal muscle.

The differential growth of the neck was studied by means of linear marks in the chick embryo. The marks were inserted into 3 different zones: Zone I, between the level of 1st and 2nd branchial cleft, zone II, between the level of the 2nd and 3rd branchial cleft, and zone III, between the level of the 3rd branchial cleft and the Cuvier duct. The deformation and dispersion of marks after further incubation of labelled embryos indicate: 1. A caudocranially oriented growth of axial and paraaxial structures causing the displacement of branchial to axial and paraxial structures, 2. an extent growth in the region of the 3rd branchial arch in contrast to other branchial arches with 2 exceptions: the extent craniocaudal growth of the operculum (2nd branchial arch) and the extent caudocranially oriented growth of the hypobranchial region. On the base of our findings the differences in the topography of some neck organs of birds and mammals could be explained.

A new method of the direct chemical demonstration of free and organically bound iodine in the thyroid gland is described. With palladium chloride it is possible to set free organically bound iodine and bring it to precipitation as insoluble palladium iodide in one step. The colored palladium iodide is good visible in the tissue section, but may be made plain after reaction with hydrosulfuric acid or a contrast staining.
The gastric mucus of different domestic mammals shows a certain pattern of reactions which is typical for the species but not for the respective gland. There is no "mucoid" as an uniform specific mucus substance and a greater plurality in the composition of the secretions as it is reflected by the classification in acid and neutral mucins. A classification of the glands as to the secretion is problematical and further consideration is necessary.
